Sustainability & Responsibility
We believe bold steps define the future. In 2015, we pledged to invest $1.1 billion in pro bono consulting over 10 years to help leading social pioneers scale and amplify their impact. In recent years, we’ve used this investment as a springboard to mobilize the kind of innovative, inclusive partnerships needed to deliver systemic change.

In February, we named François Faelli as our first-ever global managing partner of ESG, a role that oversees our collective ambition of creating a more sustainable, equitable and inclusive world.
In an industry-leading move, we achieved net-negative carbon status, meaning we purchase sufficient carbon credits funding high-quality, nature-based and innovative carbon removal projects to offset more than 100% of our scopes 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions.
We partnered with world-class universities to develop and deploy specialized post-graduate ESG training for our employees, helping them better advise clients on today’s most critical issues.
We published a series of ESG commitments to accelerate our impact with our clients, with communities and within Bain—including a commitment to embed ESG in 100% of what we do with clients.
In February, we announced Julie Coffman as our first Chief Diversity Officer. Julie has a strong mandate to infuse our DEI ambition into our global strategy.
We formed the Diverse Abilities at Bain affinity group in the US and Canada with the intent to expand across the rest of the Americas and the global Bain network.
We accelerated our diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts and outlined seven commitments to promote racial equity and social justice. As part of that work, we formalized our DEI Practice, committed an additional $100 million in pro bono consulting services, and became a founding partner of OneTen, an organization committed to hiring, training, and promoting 1 million Black Americans over the next 10 years into family-sustaining jobs with opportunities for advancement.
We furthered our sustainability ambitions by signing the Business Ambition for 1.5⁰C letter and committing to achieve net-zero carbon status by 2030.
We also earned several accolades: listed in Mogul’s Top 100 Workplaces with the Greatest Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives, a Gold recognition from India Workplace Equality Index, and Best Employer of Choice for Gender Equality in Australia.
The Asians at Bain affinity group was formally established in the US, continuing a tradition of informal gatherings.
A participant in EcoVadis evaluations since 2012, in 2018 we earned our first Gold rating, the highest award given at the time.
We made a commitment to invest $1 billion in pro bono consulting over 10 years to help our clients, many of them nonprofit organizations, tackle their toughest strategic challenges and achieve their full potential. The size and time horizon of this investment enable us to develop enduring relationships and meaningfully support our clients on the long, hard journey to change.
We were formally certified as a fully CarbonNeutral® company, having measured our global footprint in accordance with international certification standards and achieving net-zero carbon emissions. We’ve been certified carbon neutral ever since.
We formalized our Sustainability & Corporate Responsibility practice to support our corporate clients on their journeys, and we were first in our peer group to launch a carbon emission measurement and offsetting process.
