Our fleet is one of the most sustainable in the UK and includes a range of sustainable options, including plug-in or standard hybrids and all-electric vehicles. Heavy goods vehicles We manage over 650 heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), including a variety of specialist equipment for winter maintenance, highways maintenance, suction excavation, road sweeping and road repairs. Our solutions are tailored to ensure that our fleet is efficient, safe and in line with legislation. We proactively manage our vehicles to maximise their time in use and have a team of over 70 experts who deliver over 3,000 planned maintenance inspections per annum to help to keep our vehicles on the road. We also provide a 24/7 service desk to deal with breakdowns and deliver technical advice. Our Allocations team provide hundreds of additional and replacement vehicles throughout the UK when required. Balfour Beatty operates its HGV fleet under the regulatory requirements of Goods Vehicle Operator Licences, which establish strict standards for managing both vehicles and drivers. Our licensed Transport Managers, accountable to the Traffic Commissioner, ensure that our HGV operations align with complex transport regulations and uphold best practices for road safety and fleet management. Through rigorous oversight, they maintain compliance across our commercial vehicle fleet, reinforcing our commitment to safe and responsible transportation practices.

Crawler Cranes BPH Equipment operates a modern fleet of crawler cranes ranging from 50t to 300t capacity, available for hire throughout the UK. Known for setting the industry standard in crawler crane and lifting solutions, we provide both long- and short-term rental options. Survey, drones and digital technology Available to projects across the UK, our dedicated survey and drone team offers photogrammetry, project monitoring, pre-condition assessments, and comprehensive site surveys. We offer a full suite of survey tools, including automatic levels, rotating and dual-grade lasers, 360° capture cameras, high-density scanners, mobile mapping systems, and UAVs. Winter Fleet Every winter, Balfour Beatty travels over 800,000 miles and spreads tens of thousands of tonnes of salt to keep the UK’s transport networks operational. Working in collaboration with our customers, our team of over 70 experts provide essential winter maintenance services including communications to road users and support to the emergency services. Drawing on over 40 years of experience and utilising real-time Met Office data, along with the latest tracking technology across our fleet of specialist vehicles, we minimise safety risks to the millions of drivers and pedestrians using the UK’s network of roads and walkways. We pride ourselves on ensuring over 99% availability of our vehicle assets during winter periods. To make sure our vehicles remain operational, we deliver over 3,000 planned maintenance inspections across the fleet of 650 vehicles every year to minimise the length of time the vehicle is not in operation.

We continually invest in modern plant, our current offering includes 9 – 35 tonne tracked or wheeled excavators, various sizes of articulated dump trucks and 6 and 9 tonne duel view dumpers. Tower cranes Available for projects across the UK, our diverse fleet of tower cranes can be utilised to optimise lifting solutions on site. We continually invest in our fleet to ensure we introduce innovative technology and drive continuous improvement, ensuring our service offering remains industry leading. Our fleet contains both saddle-jib and luffing-jib tower cranes. Saddle-jib cranes are suitable for heavy lifting on complex projects and luffing-jib cranes are an ideal solution for sites with space constraints, such as congested urban areas. The modular design allows for simple erection, dismantling and maintenance and our cranes have the adaptability to be used in several different applications; from lifting bridges into place to building cladding works. For over 50 years, we have been delivering safe and efficient tower crane solutions and our expert in-house maintenance team respond to any on-site issues to maximise crane productivity.
Mobilisation hub The Site Mobilisation Hub supports the mobilisation and de-mobilisation of temporary site set ups. Our services include mobilising both standardised and bespoke, sustainable welfare accommodation and modular compounds, engaging with project teams at an early stage to ensure utilities, IT, furniture, fire services, temporary connections, security, procurement aspects of facilities management provision and property licenses are organised and in place ready for the project commencing. Our customer helpline Our helpline service operates all day, every day and is tailored to suit the requirements of all internal stakeholders and clients. We offer an out-of-hours critical support service for our customers, ensuring that people can reach us across a range of activity streams, any time, day or night. Using our incident reporting system, alerts are issued to bespoke distribution lists within pre-determined service level agreements and logged on client systems, ensuring immediate visibility to all. We co-ordinate calls around the business ensuring that the services provided are consistent across Balfour Beatty. We also offer the same services to our joint ventures. Power assets: overhead line and cabling The overhead line and cabling assets department is a key support function for our Power Transmission and Distribution business, providing all the specialist plant, logistic and associated support activities required to deliver overhead line and cabling projects. This includes the management, maintenance and supply of over 13,000 assets including specialist overhead line and cabling plant. We also manage, maintain and supply a logistic stock holding with an average value of £6 million. Our experts support site operation teams with specialist product and technical expertise, along with knowledge of industry working methods. We are adept at working with the customer throughout the process from proposal and design to implementing product innovation and development. We also operate an in-house LOLER/PUWER inspection process with a competent team ensuring all relevant equipment issued meets the regulatory standards.

External Plant Hire Desk We partner with industry leading strategic suppliers to ensure that our customers receive excellent service and quality. This allows us to maintain and improve the safety and technical standards of the plant and equipment in use. We deliver around 130,000 transactions per year and manage an expenditure of up to £330 million across all plant and equipment activities. Modular accommodation Modular buildings are designed to maximise off-site construction and reduce environmental impact. Our buildings are comprised of pre-finished modules/slices that typically range from 6 to 12 metres in length and are usually 2.45 to 3 metres wide. The buildings are assembled on-site to form the finished superstructure. Completely scalable and with several standard module sizes, our solution has the flexibility to suit most site footprints and is capable of multi-storey configuration, up to six-storeys high. Operator Skills Hub and training Operator Skills Hub (OSH) provides innovative, future-focused training solutions for operators across the UK delivering a range of industry-leading accredited training qualifications in conjunction with Department for Education grant funding to support the wider industry’s skills needs. This joint venture between Balfour Beatty and Flannery has grown beyond our purpose-built facility in Birmingham; where state-of-the-art training simulators, semi-autonomous plant and equipment, specialist test areas and demonstration zones has been operational since 2021 to also have facilities in Iver and on site at Sizewell. Additionally, OSH can deliver temporary and semi-permanent solutions using a fleet of mobile classroom trailers and simulator vans. We welcome all queries on how our expanded scope and geography can support with our catalogue of accredited courses including CPCS and NPORS Plant Operator, Site Safety Plus, Site-Right Eco-Operator and Loadmaster, Underground Utilities Avoidance, Proportional Pressure Indicator / High Flow Rate / Global Positioning System (GPS) machine control familiarisation, and City and Guilds electrical training including Electric Vehicle (EV) charger installation.

CCTV monitoring and control centre Our CCTV Centre of Excellence facility in Derby, deploys the latest digital security and CCTV assets, including traffic management to projects across the UK. Real-time surveillance can act as a serious deterrent for anyone thinking of carrying out illegal activities. CCTV footage can also be valuable in the event of a safety incident, enabling our teams to perform a quick review of activities on site. Services include deployable solar & wind powered CCTV and traffic management assets, fixed CCTV systems, intruder alarms, body worn devices, key holding, live monitoring and data management. Logistical services The logistics services helpdesk provides a one-stop-shop for all of your national and international haulage requirements with over 7000 individual moves completed during 2023. Through our third party (minimum Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme, silver accredited) haulage suppliers and in-house capability, we can arrange movement of anything from small parcels to piling rigs and everything in between. All movements are processed through our Roadrunner haulage software, utilising a bespoke bidding system and making optimal use of shared and return loads to drive best price. Q3 2024 will see the introduction of live vehicle tracking at customer level helping to drive efficiency with less time on site. Additional services available include lift plans, route planning, site surveys, swept path analysis and customs import and export clearances.

Fleet transport compliance The Fleet Compliance team focuses on ensuring the company operates a safe, and legally compliant road transport operation. The team manages Goods Vehicle Operators Licenses (O Licences), enabling self-delivery of heavy goods vehicle operations across all business units. Qualified Transport Managers oversee operations to ensure continuous and effective management control. Field-based staff support operational colleagues, ensuring compliance with vehicle and driver legalities. The administration function handles maintenance planning, documentation, tachograph management, and penalty processing. Team members also hold Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA) qualifications and manage industry accreditations and memberships such as Logistic UK, Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS), Van Excellence and Construction Logistics and Community Safety (CLOCS).
