A YEAR OF
MINDFUL
T R A N S I T I O N
The Barnes & Thornburg LLP 2022 DEI Annual Report
2022 was a year of so much change for Barnes & Thornburg. We opened two new offices, added four new key positions designed to better care for our talent and, oh, installed a new firm managing partner. Change in and of itself though is not necessarily share-worthy. But mindful change is. To be mindful means to be “attentive, aware, or careful” of a thing. The “thing” here is our unwavering commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The myriad of transitions experienced by our firm in 2022 dominate the focus of this annual report because each were mindful. That is, each were undertaken with our DEI objectives top of mind.
There is perhaps no better example of this than the transition from Bob Grand to Andrew Detherage as our firm managing partner. Indeed almost immediately after this shift was announced, Andy reached out to sit down and discuss our DEI commitment. We didn’t talk about programming. We didn’t talk about marketing or how to make those best law firms for (fill in the blank) lists. Instead, our focus was simple: how do we build on the transformative work achieved under Bob’s leadership (more about that later), to promote the retention and advancement of our diverse talent? See, we both agreed then (and remain aligned now), that while all of the accoutrements of DEI work are important,
More though, we hope that something in the pages that follow causes you to be further entrenched in your commitment to advancing DEI. It is our collective responsibility after all to ensure that our beloved profession is truly inclusive. Enjoy!

if those diverse professionals we recruit do not stay and do not advance, then all is for naught. This was the discussion before day one, and thus the tone and focus throughout the year. Accordingly, through stories reflecting our marked demographic growth (especially amongst our partnership ranks), to our journey toward becoming Mansfield Certified, in the pages that follow we endeavor to showcase a bit of this mindfulness. As always, our hope is that you glean the depths of our commitment to change and emerge convinced of its authenticity.

Formalized Black Women Lead Collective
A signature professional development effort spearheaded by our Firm Diversity Partner and fully supported by firm leadership to ensure that Barnes & Thornburg sets the standard regarding the representation of Black women lawyers in leadership.
Barnes & Thornburg was one of only 43 U.S.-based law firms recognized for its level of disclosure of diversity-related metrics and distinguished performance against six core pillars: demographics, leadership and talent pipeline, recruitment and retention, business innovation and strategy, marketing, and diversity and inclusion in the community.
Effective Jan. 1, 2023, Brittney Lee, former marketing services manager and BTBlack co-lead, stepped into the firm's diversity, equity and inclusion director role. We are excited to have her help lead the direction of DEI at this firm and look forward to watching her thrive. Congratulations, Brittney!

MANSFIELD CERTIFIcation
In 2022, Barnes & Thornburg participated in Mansfield 5.0 and is now, Mansfield Certified! While taking steps to make sure that ALL of our talent is positioned for advancement has been a part of a longstanding core strategy, we saw becoming Mansfield Certified as a necessary step to further activate our commitment to lasting change.
Earning certification was only the beginning. In July of 2022, we registered for Mansfield 6.0. And whether part of a current cohort or not, we have begun the work to make sure that both the spirit and the letter of Mansfield are fully integrated into the way we do business. Prelaw scholars program
In it’s second year, six recent undergraduates were selected to participate in Barnes & Thornburg’s Prelaw Scholars Program. The program is designed to assist students from underrepresented backgrounds interested in the legal profession and pursuit of a law degree.
Barnes & Thornburg covers the cost of the students’ Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and the LSAT prep course. After successful completion of the LSAT, the firm will help them offset the cost of law school applications by providing funds for a credential assembly service.
And new in 2022, the Prelaw Scholars Program also provided the students with attorney mentors. Scholars selected for this program have demonstrated excellent academic and personal achievements, will be taking LSAT in the next 12 months, and have demonstrated a financial need.

“As the first in my family to attempt to go to law school, I do not feel as if I have the resources to succeed. Having mentors and support from Barnes & Thornburg will make a world of difference!”
Kenna Chic, Georgetown University
Jiin Jeong, Hamilton College
“I am excited to be part of a diverse group of scholars who will be enriching the legal field and their communities with their experiences, passions, and commitments. I am looking forward to the mentorship and support from the program.”
Aylin Murillo-Valle, Xavier University of Louisiana
“I am excited for the opportunity to be a Barnes & Thornburg Prelaw Scholar because it means that I will be learning alongside experts who truly believe in the work that they are doing. It is preparation to serve a more compassionate and just society,”
Jeannine O. Nwade, University at Buffalo
“I am excited to be a Prelaw Scholar because I’ll have the opportunity to prepare for and take the LSAT without the financial burdens commonly associated with it. I’m also looking forward to working alongside exceptional mentors while growing close to the other amazing people in my cohort."
Moses Okpala, University of Illinois
"In my world, sometimes I feel alone, and parts of the world could get overwhelming, however, as a Prelaw Scholar the loneliness will be alleviated. I’ll have the support of people who have immense experience in the field of study that I am interested in and people who have been in my shoes before,” said Okpala, a Division 1 football player who is expected to graduate in May 2023 with a degree in psychology."
Iyunola O. Owoyemi, Alcorn State University
“I am excited and supremely grateful to be a Barnes & Thornburg Prelaw Scholar because of the mentorship the program offers. Also, I am confident that Barnes & Thornburg is a firm where my unique self can thrive and become a greater inspiration to girls like me globally.”

Each year the nation pauses to celebrate and honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We do too. Specifically, in conjunction with treating the day as a firmwide day of service, our prior year Camille Conway Diversity Award recipient also offers reflections on the legacy of Dr. King and the impact of same on our journey toward change. Our 2022 award recipient was partner and trailblazer, Alan K. Mills. His words were powerful and timely. THANK YOU BOB
THANKS, BOB
Robert T. Grand
Firm Managing Partner and Co-Chair, DEI Committee
2014-2022
The first commitment made by Bob in his LCLD Leaders At The Front pledge was to use his voice to “highlight the Firm’s core principles, including commitment to the development of a diverse workforce in which all voices are heard and all lawyers, of whatever nationality, race, gender, or sexual orientation, have a path to success.” Over the course of our six years together as co-chairs of our Diversity Committee (and quite frankly, over the course of our 26+ years as friends), this is what I have witnessed from Bob at pretty much every turn. Bottom line, we are a better, more inclusive, more informed, more equitable firm because of Bob Grand’s leadership and vision.
So it is only fitting that we round out our 2022 DEI Annual Report with a resounding “thank you” to Bob. “Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in your absence.” – Sheryl Sandberg. Mission accomplished Bob!

"The Explicit Impact of Implicit Bias: Interrupting Implicit Biases to Create More Inclusive Work Environments"
Ongoing DEI and implicit bias training are critical to our success and necessary to fully activate our commitment to change. So in Q1 of 2022, we partnered with national DEI consultant, Nextions LLC (under the leadership of Dr. Arin N. Reeves), to help us on our journey toward better. The training was firmwide, but was split into three learning modules so that each session could be tailored to each of the following groups:
• Partners | C-Suite | Of Counsel and Directors
• Associates | Staff Attorneys
• Employees | LAAs and Business Professionals
The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.
