Those of us staying put this season know that dressing for summer in the city comes with its own set of challenges. One minute you're sweltering on the commute, the next you're reaching for an emergency layer in a supermarket with ambitions of becoming the Arctic. And yet, high temperatures need not mean abandoning all sartorial ambitions. Enter Primark's latest summer collection, which makes a convincing case for looking chic even when the mercury is doing its worst.
Few things are as gratifying as a really good set of separates. In the warmer months, they become something of a secret weapon. Primark's matching pieces work overtime, carrying you from desk to dinner and every garden party in between. A silky skirt and blouse combination has all the ease of a dress but with far more mileage, while an asymmetric top paired with flowing trousers strikes that elusive balance between dressed up and completely unfussy.
Elsewhere, there are clever pieces destined to become the backbone of a hardworking wardrobe. A pure cotton pinstripe shirt worn loose over lace trimmed satin shorts feels wonderfully borrowed from the boys, particularly when finished with chunky clogs. It is the sort of look that appears far more considered than the effort required.

For those with a weakness for details, Primark's elevated T-shirts offer a welcome departure from the plain white variety. A tie neck T-shirt has a distinctly French flavour and looks especially good tucked into tailored cargo trousers. The contrast between soft draping and utility inspired tailoring feels fresh and grown up, with trainers by day and barely there sandals after dark.
Heatwaves, meanwhile, need not signal the end of elegant dressing. An olive green lace dress brings a touch of romance to summer evenings, while draped balloon trousers with a coordinating top offer something altogether more bohemian. Minimalists will find plenty to love in the classic jersey dress, best accompanied by a lightweight shacket when office air conditioning reaches absurd levels.
