They’re Savage
The Lord Of The Rings has Hobbits. Narnia has a faun. The Wizard Of Oz has Munchkins. But in Wildwood, the first magical creatures our heroes Prue and Curtis encounter are… talking coyotes. Described by Travis Knight as daydreamer Curtis’ “romantic fantasy stories come to life”, Wildwood’s coyotes — literal dogsbodies of the exiled Dowager Governess Alexandra — aren’t to be trifled with. “They are savage animals,” declares Knight of the Impassable Wilderness’ armed-to-the-teeth, flea-riddled grunts. No kidding!
THEY’RE SNAPPY DRESSERS
So the coyotes may not be the nicest of folk, granted, but they do at least get to rock some natty threads as they rep their warren in the woods. Suited up in what Knight describes as “Napoleonic garb” — all cutlasses, top hats and golden buttons — the coyotes are literally dressed to kill. But as Chris Butler reminds us, “Alexandra dresses them up in fine uniforms, but they’re still basically a pack of mangy, slobbering, wild dogs.”
THEY’RE SCARY
When it came to sussing out how to characterise Wildwood’s gnarliest residents, Butler found himself spiralling down a rabbit hole (well, coyote warren) of existential questions. “What would it really be like if you could take an animal and give it human traits? What would a coyote really be like if you stuck it in a uniform, gave it a gun?” All roads invariably led to the same conclusion. “It’s pretty terrifying,” states Butler.
