n the June morning Jonathan Anderson presented Dior’s autumn/winter 2027 collection in Paris’ Tuileries Garden, the weather may have foreseen what was about to descend the runway. Bright blue skies provided a fitting backdrop for a
collection brimming with ruffled skirts and floaty dresses that, quite literally, mimicked the nearby flowers blowing in the breeze as the models walked.
Though the show was for the autumn/winter season, Anderson described it as “transversal of seasons.” There was more than a little spring to it — the raffia flowers that bloomed from hips and shoulders on a handful of dresses, the feathers that trimmed jackets and skirts, the lilypads affixed to stilettos. The cooler seasons were addressed in a similar way, with the Bar jacket reimagined in more fluid, voluminous forms — sometimes brocade, sometimes lace, other times a more practical felt — trousers cut in balloon-like silhouettes and jeans, one of Anderson’s specialities, either left plain or occasionally embroidered with a scalloped trim or covered buttons.
The colour palette leant similarly jovial. Yellow, pink and green appeared in different shades throughout the collection, grounded by the black, white and grey Dior always hewed closely to. Texture was where Anderson flexed his experimental proclivities. The show opened with a trio of tiered ruffle mini skirts, polka dotted and with trailing trains, exploding from beneath Bar jackets. A leather jacket employed fluffy white shearling down its front, giving the impression of a fur stole being slung around the neck, while elsewhere, beading, fringing and sequins leant the collection a sumptuousness that made you want to run your hands over everything.
When ELLE Australia shot the collection for our September issue, an airy, spacious studio filled with early morning light proved the perfect location to celebrate the clothes in all their dramatic, frothy glory. Hair and makeup was kept minimal so as not to compete with the pieces — although, it would be hard to overshadow looks this spectacular.
