WE CAUGHT UP WITH THE 'LOVE STORY' STAR TO TALK ALL THINGS JONATHON ANDERSON, SHARING WARDROBES WITH HER SISTERS AND WHAT’S TO COME
WORDS BY SARAH NOONAN
LOS ANGELES: Fresh from celebrating her birthday in New York—complete with a surprise party thrown by her husband—Grace Gummer arrived at the Dior’s Cruise 2027 show already firmly in step with Dior’s world, having worn a string of the Maison’s looks in recent months.
Her affinity with the House’s evolving vision under Jonathan Anderson is evident in the moments after the show, when, in conversation with ELLE Australia’s editor Jessica Bailey, she rattles off the details she loved most: the colours, the textures, the “strong, powerful draping” and, especially, the pleats. “It was very Jonathan, [while] still sticking to the Dior feeling, but modern and new,” she says.
Anderson’s debut Cruise collection for Dior carried a distinctly cinematic mood, where LA — a city layered with old Hollywood glamour references — became a fitting backdrop. The collection moved seamlessly between those worlds of old and new, where archival gestures found a contemporary clarity and house codes were neither repeated nor rejected.

Florals recurred throughout in varying registers; at times printed and precise, at others appearing as sculpted appliqué or fragmented embellishment across dresses and tailoring. References to Dior’s own past were present, alongside touches that felt more explicitly cinematic such as the accessories, from structured bags to heels finished with a sharper, almost theatrical edge.
Even Dior’s most familiar codes were treated with a lighter hand. The Bar jacket, in particular, was softened through fringing, allowing the fabric to blur slightly into the silhouette of the look.
“I love Jonathan’s use of old blending into new and having it still [feel] youthful and energetic and just so feminine without being too precious or sweet,” says Gummer of what makes Anderson’s work resonate so deeply with her. “I think there’s a fine line and he does it so well.” It’s a sensibility she clearly sees herself in, too. “I can feel myself wearing all of these clothes,” she adds. “The pumps… I want [them] all.”
Fashion, of course, has long existed within the Gummer family orbit. As the daughter of Meryl Streep and sister to fellow actors Mamie and Louisa Gummer, style conversations have seemingly always been a topic in the family group chat.
There was, however, a period where everyone seemed to share the same wardrobe. “I used to steal my older sister’s clothes and then she started stealing my clothes,” she says laughing. “And then my little sister started stealing my clothes.
“I think we now have completely distinct fashion identities, but I would say it all started with me,” she says, laughing. “And I think they would agree.”

That early sense of shared influence and reinterpretation now finds its way into her screen work. Gummer’s recent turn as Caroline Kennedy in FX’s Love Story brings the actor a renewed register of attention. It is a role defined by restraint, where the most powerful scenes are shaped by what is left unsaid. Across the series, Gummer resists emphasis, allowing the character to take shape gradually through accumulation rather than a single defining moment. It is a performance only few can execute with such precision, and one Gummer delivers with striking ease.
And it’s an approach she seems to be carrying into her next project. “I’m really gravitating towards roles that speak to me,” she says. “Something that tells a story I’m interested in telling, that moves me, that challenges me, and that creatively fulfils me.”
