EDITOR's LETTER
Who would have guessed this time last year that 12 months later we would still be in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has had such a profound impact worldwide? I hope you and your loved ones are still OK and look forward – as do I – to better times, hopefully this summer.
Post-COVID-19 comes the COVID-19 recovery, with many challenges ahead for businesses. We can only hope for a swift economic recovery in many countries. Tax measures will accompany that recovery and businesses should be informed of which measures apply in which countries.
1 July 2021 marks a major change in the EU VAT rules for B2C e-commerce sellers and marketplaces/platforms. This change will particularly affect businesses selling from the UK that had to deal with the consequences of Brexit as of 1 January 2021 and will now have to deal with changed rules again. Fingers crossed that it will all work out.
On the same date, new Canadian GST/HST rules will enter into effect for digital products, supplies of goods and supplies made via short-term accommodation platforms.
In other countries such as Singapore and the U.S. businesses will have to be aware of their GST/sales tax obligations. This issue includes articles on potential GST registration in Singapore and how to mitigate U.S. sales tax exposure by participating in a voluntary disclosure program.
Last but not least, I would like to wish you a wonderful summer, however you spend it-- close to home or travelling abroad.
