The nonprofit recently moved to a new Electronic Health Record system to replace an antiquated, unsupported server that ran on obsolete hardware.

While the new system didn’t require data from the old system to be integrated, the organization still needed to provide legacy records to patients on request to comply with HIPAA retention requirements.

This health and human services organization was obligated to ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations while keeping the legacy data in a secure, easy-to-use format. Unsure where to begin, they reached out to BDO.

BDO's Solution

BDO was immediately able to understand the client’s issues and identify the right cloud solution for their needs based on their security, compliance and budget requirements—in this case, Amazon Web Services.

BDO then developed a reporting portal, using a security-first architecture including encryption for data at rest and in transit—a necessary measure given the sensitivity of the data and stringent regulatory rules.

Even though BDO lacked access to the underlying source code, the team quickly scaled and enabled new capabilities by migrating the database from the legacy application to the new user-friendly web portal.

With the implementation of the web portal, this nonprofit no longer needs to worry about patching the application or troubleshooting unexpected issues.

Eliminating technology issues helped the organization save time. Resources that would have gone to ongoing maintenance and upgrades have been reallocated to more strategic initiatives that help further their mission.

The new web portal also offers enhanced reporting capabilities and enables faster response times to patient requests, improving patient experience and minimizing the potential risks of a HIPPA violation.
