Dr. Hasmukh Patel is the CEO and Co-Founder of AgeCare. Born and brought up in Kenya by his parents who immigrated to Kenya from India,
Dr. Patel was sent to England at the age of seventeen to attend high school. He graduated from Aberdeen University Medical School in 1982. Following Family Practice residencyin England , Dr. Patel moved with his wife and two young sons to Canada in 1987. They first arrived and lived in rural Alberta, where he was the only physician in a farming and ranching community of about 1000 people.
Four years later they moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta where Dr. Patel practiced family medicine until 2004. One of his responsibilities as a practising family doctor was to attend to his patients who were in nursing homes. It was during this time that he observed two things: one, the nursing homes were built in the 1960’s and 1970’s, they were very institutional, poorly maintained and a depressing place to be in; secondly, there was a shortage of nursing home beds; seniors were staying longer than they needed to in the hospital beds. This was the nucleus of the idea to build a new, modern residential looking nursing home. Dr. Patel recognized the need to improve the quality of long-term care facilities and clinical care for seniors in Alberta and after convincing the local Health Region in Medicine Hat, Alberta, he was awarded a contract to design, build and operate an 86-bed nursing home under a P3 model in 1998. This was
the beginning of AgeCare.
He then created a business case including a partnership funding and operational model to develop 86-bed “Aging in Place” facility, and he
raised required capital through bank debt and private equity from friends and family. This model has evolved to the creation of multi-generational communities, that include seniors care, independent living for seniors and housing for individuals and young families. Since the first nursing home project in 1999, AgeCare has grown to 15 facilities across western Canada, operating about 2900 beds. The growth has been through new development and acquisition. AgeCare employs over 3100 staff and remained mostly a family business owned and operated by the two founders until 2019 when Axium Infrastructure Fund, a Private Equity Fund out of Quebec acquired a majority equity partnership in AgeCare.
He is rooted in the importance of education and life-long learning. At the age of 62 years, Dr. Patel was accepted at Oxford University, Said School
of Business for its Executive MBA program. The Oxford learning experience and its distinctive teaching approach to create next generation of global leaders inspired him to create an endowment Oxford Scholarship for EMBA candidates from Africa. Dr. Patel’s interests include outdoor activities. He has summited Mt. Kilimanjaro and done the Machu Pichu hike in Peru, and he also likes playing golf, traveling, and reading.

Michael Lee-Chin is widely regarded as a visionary entrepreneur whose philosophy of “doing well and doing good” has resulted in extraordinary business success and inspiring philanthropic initiatives.
Michael is Founder and Chairman of Portland Holdings, a privately held investment company that manages public equity and private equity, and has an ownership interest in a collection of diversified businesses operating globally in sectors including financial services, insurance, consumer goods, media, tourism, agriculture, real estate development and targeted radionuclide therapy.
Born in Port Antonio, Jamaica in 1951, Michael immigrated to Canada in 1970, to study Civil Engineering at McMaster University, in Hamilton, Ontario. After beginning post‐graduate studies, Michael’s trajectory changed and, at the age of 26, he became a financial advisor, quickly progressing to the position of Branch Manager.
In 1983, at the age of 32, Michael borrowed money to purchase $500,000 worth of Mackenzie Financial Corporation stock. Four years later, the stock appreciated sevenfold and Michael used the profits to make his first acquisition - a small Ontario-based investment firm, AIC Limited. At the time, Advantage Investment Counsel (a division of AIC Limited) had assets under management of just $800,000. Within 20 years, AIC grew from less than $1 million in assets to more than $15 billion under management, at its business peak. In 2009, AIC’s retail investment fund business was sold to a leading Canadian financial services group.
Portland is committed to “building strong indigenous businesses” and, equally important, these businesses must also seek to improve the social well being of the communities in which they operate.
Among his many personal accomplishments, Michael has received Doctor of Laws degrees from a number of distinguished universities in Canada and Jamaica. He has been profiled in Forbes, Fortune, Canadian Business, Black Enterprise and Time Magazine, to name a few. From 2011 – 2016, Michael held the esteemed position of Chancellor of Wilfrid Laurier University. Michael is recipient of the Order of Jamaica and the Order of Ontario and, in 2016, he was appointed Chair of the Government of Jamaica’s Economic Growth Council (“EGC”) in an effort to bolster economic development.

After developing an in-depth understanding of the complex world underpinning the charity sector, John recognized a need to make giving more accessible and more effective. He saw that while wanting to help others comes naturally, knowing how to make a difference through charitable giving does not.
With that in mind, John went on to launch Charitable Impact. Its mission? Nurture the generosity within each person, and bring the resources for creating change in the world to everyone.

Dr. Hasmukh Patel is the CEO and Co-Founder of AgeCare. Born and brought up in Kenya by his parents who immigrated to Kenya from India, Dr.
This was the beginning
of AgeCare.
He then created a business case including a partnership funding and operational model to develop 86-bed “Aging in Place” facility, and he raised required capital through bank debt and private equity from friends and family. This model has evolved to the creation of multi-generational communities, that include seniors care, independent living for seniors and housing for individuals and young families.

MacLean has set the highest record for interim spousal and child support at over $100,000 a month, the highest record for permanent spousal and child support at over $116,000 a month, the highest fines record for B.C. , set the precedent for international Mareva injunctions, the highest special costs record at $1.5 million, and one of the largest retroactive child support awards in favour of a husband, dismissal of a wife’s spousal support in a high net worth long marriage and he won the leading Canadian case on child custody and the maximum contact principle in Young v. Young in the Supreme Court of Canada.
Lorne has successfully protected clients’ rights since 1983 in the field of high net worth and complex family law disputes, dealing with issues such as spousal and child support, property division, child custody and parenting time and responsibilities disputes, guardianship and access, and marriage-like relationships.
He has earned a reputation as a tough yet thoughtful advocate for his clients. Lorne MacLean’s K.C. designation is an honour that recognizes his exceptional merit and contribution to the BC legal profession.
Lorne has had the rare honour of making two appearances before the Supreme Court of Canada on behalf of the appellants in complex family law cases. Young v. Young remains the leading case on child custody in Canada and Leskun v. Leskun established key principles to be applied to spousal support decisions and when support can be reviewed. MacLean has even more wins on SCC leave applications in cases involving family
businesses and express trusts.
He also successfully represented Juanita Nott in Canada’s first frozen embryo custody dispute. Lorne’s infamous high net asset victory includes a record 2019 victory in Devathasan v. Devathasan where over $116,000 of combined child and spousal support was awarded along with $20,000 million of property, over $6,000,000 of lump sum support and $1.5 million of special costs.
Other major wins include a 2019 win in the BC Court of Appeal in Li v. Rao – a high profile multimillion dollar void marriage family case and Lightle v. Kotar where spousal support was nearly tripled, and a stockbroker’s book of business was deemed family property for the first time.
Acting for a doctor father in a long marriage, MacLean skillfully cross examine his spouse in a substantial spousal support claim and exposed serious credibility issues. The result was a complete dismissal of the spousal support claim and even better, the husband obtained hundreds of thousands form his spouse in retroactive spousal support.
Lorne MacLean, K.C., alongside his top associate Fraser MacLean, at MacLean Law recently brought to light and prevented the use of the first documented artificial intelligence (“AI”) hallucinated cases that, if unaddressed, would have proven to be fatal to the Court and negatively impact future case laws in their recent judgment, Zhang v. Chen, 2024 BCSC 285. The case, which was first of its kind in Canada, has garnered worldwide attention and has cautioned the legal profession to take care where use of AI in the legal profession is concerned.
In addition to his courtroom work, Lorne MacLean has published prolifically on numerous topics relating to BC family law and BC divorce. He is a video and blog author and frequent guest on radio and television shows, including Judge Harvey Brownstone’s popular legal education show “Family Matters.”
A sought-after resource for both Canadian and US magazines and newspapers, he has also served as a guest lecturer at the UBC Law School and has lectured and been interviewed about his multiple innovations in the efficient delivery of client-based services that increase clients’ participation in – and reduce clients’ costs of their cases. He also provides considerable free family law information to the general public.
Lorne MacLean, K.C. lives life to the fullest, loves running and weightlifting, jazz music, strategy games, and travelling with his family. He especially loves to find the “hidden gems” in the cities he visits on his world travels. Along with keeping his mind sharp, Lorne is avid about keeping physically healthy with bootcamps and cross-fit, half marathons and biking.
