THE CHALLENGE
OUR SOLUTION
SmithGroup made a bold move: eliminating traditional assigned desks in favor of a free-address model. This approach meant every piece of furniture and styling element needed to support various work modes, from quiet individual focus to spontaneous group collaboration.
But flexibility wasn’t the only requirement. The space also needed to:
Reflect SmithGroup’s national presence with nods to all 20 of their US offices.
Feel unmistakably San Diego with a strong concept tied to bridges, boardwalks, and piers—an ode to connecting—and our job was to enhance that idea even further through furniture and decor.
Stay within budget while maximizing design impact.
Our Hyphn Fringe team was also challenged to create memorable, story-rich moments, without overshadowing day-to-day functionality. The office needed to be both a destination and a practical tool.
OUR SOLUTION
Flexible Foundations
Hyphn delivered a seamless, multi-layered solution:
Modular furnishings like height-adjustable laptop tables and posture-friendly seating.
A boardroom table that disassembles in minutes, converting into a gathering space.
Mobile planters on casters to optimize greenery and space use dynamically.
A transformed Workcafe ‘The Patio’—designed with terrazzo, velvet, and stylish seating—for indoor-outdoor fluidity.
Fringe Styling with Heart and Humor
Fringe Styling amplified the brand’s identity and playfulness through custom, curated touches:
Global Office Easter Eggs: Hidden details and accessories tied to each SmithGroup location—from a vintage cable car to a 1940s viewfinder.
Custom Matchbook Art: A handmade wall feature using vintage matchbooks sourced from each city.
Ice Cream Cone Wall: Team members selected their own “flavor” and literal cherries on top—adding a sweet sense of personalization.
These moments weren’t just beautiful, they were storytelling tools, infusing warmth, humor, and purpose into every corner.
Collaboration at it's best
One of the most rewarding aspects of the project was the energy and creativity of the SmithGroup team. Working closely with Megan Skaalen, Lesley Christensen, and Emily Morris, Hyphn and Fringe enjoyed an open, collaborative process full of spontaneous problem-solving, joyful creativity, and shared wins.
"Working with Hyphn Fringe team was an absolute joy! Alison and Chyanna are incredible creative partners who brought so much heart, humor, and imagination to the process. Their thoughtful curation of unique art and accessories added the perfect finishing touches, infusing every corner of our space with warmth, personality, and a welcoming sense of hospitality.
One of the most meaningful touches was incorporating decorative items that represent each city where we have offices, a beautiful nod to our team's roots and reach. And then there was the ice cream wall! Their idea to create a playful installation with a cone for each team member was pure genius. It captured our love of storytelling and design in the most delightful way.
Fringe didn’t just help us accessorize, they helped us express who we are. Their creativity, character, and collaborative spirit made the entire experience unforgettable. We couldn’t have asked for better partners to bring our vision to life."

ABOUT THE CLIENT
Designing a space worth showing up to
When SmithGroup set out to open their new office in downtown San Diego, they envisioned more than just a place to work. They wanted a flexible, people-centric environment that would energize their team, honor their national identity, and reflect the creative spirit of Southern California. Hyphn partnered closely with SmithGroup’s designers to deliver just that—helping them realize a workspace that’s as practical as it is visually striking, and as rooted in brand identity as it is in local charm.
