Strengthening Ethiopia’s Response Capacity
Ethiopia
Bloomberg Philanthropies made very early investments in strengthening the capacity of health care systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Ethiopia, when there were less than 20 cases, Bloomberg’s on-the-ground partners helped the government assess the feasibility of implementing social distancing and other non-pharmaceutical interventions and develop media campaigns to effectively communicate the risks of COVID-19 and proper health and safety measures. Together with Vital Strategies’ Resolve to Save Lives and the World Health Organization, Bloomberg Philanthropies helped the country boost daily testing capacity, set up a contact tracing program, train thousands of health care workers in infection prevention and control, and improve mortality data collection processes to better measure the scale of the pandemic.

Supporting Sustainable Recovery
Accra, Ghana
Accra Mayor Mohammed Adjei Sowah has been working with C40 Cities and the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy to ensure a healthier and more sustainable future for his city’s nearly 2.3 million residents. With their support, Mayor Adjei Sowah has pushed forward on his climate agenda despite the pandemic, launching Accra’s first five-year Climate Action Plan to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 in October 2020 and making progress on priority actions such as major open-space greening projects and bus rapid transit systems. These efforts to mitigate climate change and build resilience are critical for protecting — and improving — the economic livelihoods and wellbeing of this coastal city’s residents.

Responding to Community Needs
London, United Kingdom
Bloomberg L.P. and Bloomberg Philanthropies partnered with London Mayor Sadiq Khan to support the launch of two COVID-19 emergency response funds that have distributed grants to more than 2,000 nonprofit social service and cultural organizations and over 100 for-profit cultural venues and organizations that were at risk of closing due to the pandemic. The company also supported many longstanding London-based nonprofit partners such as St. Mungo’s, which was able to provide almost 100,000 meals to over 2,000 homeless beneficiaries — while Bloomberg Associates continued to advise the city on addressing homelessness and provided models for possible scenarios for shelter capacity needs based on rising infection rates and other factors.

Preventing Gender-Based Violence in Lima as COVID-19 Heightens Incidence
Lima, Peru
Bloomberg Associates provided strategic guidance and technical assistance to help the city launch a month-long domestic violence awareness campaign, “No Estás Sola #ActuemosAhora” (You Are Not Alone #Let’s Act Now), aimed at helping women better understand the different types of gender-based violence and empowering them to call the local government for support — and encouraging all members of society witnessing violence to step in and help. Lima, like many other cities around the world, has suffered a surge in reported domestic violence cases due to increased time at home and the psychological and economic toll of the pandemic. Bloomberg L.P.’s Global Marketing and Design team designed the creative assets, which were shared via social media, radio stations, and advertisements across malls, bus stops, and trains.

Tackling the Obesity Epidemic During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Santiago, Chile
To tackle its high rate of childhood obesity, Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge winner Santiago, Chile, developed a game called “Juntos Santiago” (Together Santiago) to encourage students and their families to eat healthy foods and engage in physical activity. The program’s healthy challenges have led to significant improvements in body mass index, overall physical activity, and nutritional habits. In response to the pandemic and the attendant school closures, the city worked quickly to adapt the program to include physical exercises designed for limited spaces in homes and made sure the program’s nutritional recommendations included foods in the care packages being distributed to those struggling with food insecurity due to the pandemic.

Responding to Community Needs: Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific Region
Hong Kong, S.A.R., China
Bloomberg L.P. launched a volunteer project where over 600 employees from 16 Asia-Pacific offices, including Hong Kong, assembled over 2,600 kits with toiletries and household cleaning products to be delivered to essential workers and the vulnerable in their communities. As COVID-19 disrupted the education of millions of young people globally, Bloomberg L.P. pivoted its mentoring programs in the Asia-Pacific region to be delivered virtually. For example, through nonprofit partners Junior Achievement Asia Pacific and Teach For India, members of the Women’s Buyside Community mentored over 200 female high school and university students across Hong Kong, India, Japan, and Singapore about succeeding in finance as women.

Protecting Essential Resources and Livelihoods in the Philippines
The Philippines
Around the world, more than three billion people rely on the ocean for food or their livelihood, making local fishers essential workers during the pandemic. With a focus on ten countries that produce more than 80 percent of all fish caught worldwide, the Vibrant Oceans Initiative advocates for policy changes to protect reefs and fisheries, shares data to inform policymaking, and builds partnerships with governments and other philanthropic funders. In the Philippines, one of the initiative’s focus countries, 1.9 million people are small-scale fishers, catching nearly half of the country’s fish. Bloomberg Philanthropies works with partners, including local governments, to establish protected areas and implement sustainable fishing practices that protect the environment and sustain the fish population. As the pandemic has caused greater food insecurity around the world, this work is more essential than ever.

Supporting Sustainable Recovery
Seattle, USA
As part of the Bloomberg American Cities Climate Challenge, Bloomberg Philanthropies has been working with Seattle, Washington, on transitioning the city away from single occupancy car use. In April, like many cities across the world, Seattle temporarily closed off nearly 20 miles of streets to most vehicular traffic to provide residents with enough room to walk and do other outdoor activities safely. Within about a month, Mayor Jenny Durkan announced the closures would be permanent, recognizing the transformative impact on residents’ ability to bike and walk across the city — and therefore, the accessibility of the city for those without cars — as well as the additional benefit of reducing car emissions.

Seattle is also part of C40 Cities, a global network of nearly 100 mayors of the world’s biggest cities dedicated to tackling climate change. In July, C40 released a detailed roadmap for achieving a sustainable and equitable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The C40 Mayors’ Agenda for a Green and Just Recovery provides local leaders with specific guidance on creating green jobs, investing in crucial public services, protecting mass transit, supporting essential workers, and giving public spaces back to people and nature.
In addition, through Bloomberg Philanthropies’ COVID-19 Local Response Initiative, Mayor Durkan was able to share early lessons learned from the city’s response to COVID-19 with other mayors across the country and incorporate other mayors’ ideas into Seattle’s ongoing response efforts. See video in carousel to hear Mayor Durkan discuss how the city ramped up testing.

Through a partnership with World Central Kitchen, Bloomberg Philanthropies provided more than one million meals to NYC Health + Hospital employees.
Bloomberg Philanthropies, along with a group of other foundations, helped raise more than $110 million from more than 1,300 donors to provide more than 800 grants and no-interest loans to small and mid-sized nonprofits in New York City.
As the pandemic limited options for safe outdoor activity during the summer, Bloomberg Philanthropies, along with the Ford Foundation and The JPB Foundation, helped The Fresh Air Fund provide 26,000 children from low-income communities across New York City with safe, supervised recreational activity and employ more than 200 young adults as activity specialists, coaches, and counselors.
Bloomberg Philanthropies and Vital Strategies’ Resolve to Save Lives partnered with the New York State Department of Health to launch a statewide contact tracing program. As part of this effort, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health designed and disseminated an online contact tracing training curriculum. More than one million people from around the world have enrolled in the introductory course that is free to the public.
