In a market crowded with beauty products making marketing claims that seem too good to be true, OLAPLEX stands alone with a formula capable of re-linking bonds while preventing the formation of Cysteic acid.
Say, what?
Let’s start at the beginning: Hair contains millions of Disulfide bonds that give structure, strength and stability. When these bonds are broken (by chemical treatments like hair color and relaxants or heat from styling tools), damaged hair results.
OLAPLEX changed the game for clients and colorists with its patented single ingredient: Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate.
Now, colorists use OLAPLEX to re-link Disulfide bonds, keeping their clients’ hair looking healthy, shiny and beautiful.
“We put it all on the table to celebrate where we are going as an industry.”

A Bonding Experience
Since OLAPLEX entered the market, colorists and consumers alike have become more informed about hair bonds and how to repair them. But they’ve also become confused as more and more reparative and conditioning products hit the shelves and the waters have become muddied with mixed marketing messages.
Make no mistake, there’s nothing like Olaplex. Here are the facts that back up the product.
There are other products on the market that contain conditioning ingredients and/or protein. But those won’t re-link the Disulfide bonds and stop the formation of Cysteic Acid. It’s important to note the difference when reading product labels if you’re looking for true bond repair.
Proteins and conditioning ingredients are still important, but not reparative.
“Unlike protein treatments, our bond-building technology works on a molecular level to re-link the broken Disulfide bonds, improving the strength of the hair while making it more durable and resilient toward future damage,” says Lavinia Popescu, chief scientist at OLAPLEX.
“Although many products tout bond-building, none can do it in the way OLAPLEX does. Our proprietary technology penetrates the hair cuticle and forms strong, covalent bonds in order to repair the inner cortex of the hair in minutes,” she adds.

OLAPLEX Does Not Cause Hair Loss and Breakage
OLAPLEX products are safe and effective. Hair breakage and hair loss can be distressing. However, OLAPLEX products have been tested for safety and efficacy, and they do not cause hair loss or hair breakage. We recently released test results from independent third-party laboratories, going above and beyond industry standards, to demonstrate this. We have full confidence and believe in the safety and efficacy of our products, and want our customers to have the same confidence.
We empathize with those who are experiencing hair loss or hair breakage and are searching for answers on what may be causing it. There are many possible contributing factors, including diet, stress, health concerns, pregnancy and pharmaceutical use. Anyone experiencing consistent hair loss should consult a dermatologist to best understand their unique hair and skin needs.
All OLAPLEX products are labeled with instructions for recommended use. It’s not possible to “over bond” hair when using OLAPLEX products as instructed. OLAPLEX’s products work to protect hair and re-link existing bonds, not create new ones. As bonds constantly face damaging forces like heat from styling tools, color and chemical treatments, brushing, environmental factors and the natural aging process, they need to be strengthened on a continuous basis. Everyone has broken hair bonds to some extent. Even if you have healthy hair, you will have some level of damage that OLAPLEX would be able to repair.
And, OLAPLEX is compatible with any color or lightener brand, even those that contain a built-in “bonder.”
“It can still be used as it contains our proprietary bond-building technology that works like no other bond builder on the market,” says Popescu.
OLAPLEX Cannot Be Overused
OLAPLEX products N°. 4 and N°. 6 contain minimal hydrolyzed vegetable protein, also known as peptides, at very low levels (0.0025% in N°. 4 and 0.000625% in N°. 6). Other OLAPLEX products do not contain any forms of protein. Peptides such as those in OLAPLEX’s N°. 4 and N°. 6 are chemically very different from standard proteins, and therefore do not weigh down hair. Keratin, for example, is a naturally occurring protein in hair and makes up about 95 percent of hair mass. Hair care products use fragments of keratin to supplement damaged hair keratin and restore the hair’s strength and shine.
OLAPLEX is not a Protein Treatment Brand
OLAPLEX is for all hair types—not just for those who receive chemical services. Whether your hair is color treated, textured treated, virgin or anything in between, it can be damaged daily by heat from styling tools, color and chemical treatments, brushing, environmental factors and the natural aging process. Everyone has broken hair bonds to some extent. OLAPLEX assists in both preventing damage and repairing it up to 80% of its healthier state.

No. 1 and No. 2 together are the most intensive and reparative products—and exclusive to beauty professionals.
But beauty pros know clients will get the best results when they use OLAPLEX in their at-home care regimen as well.
“When it comes to their take-home products, personally and professionally, I recommend No. 0 Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment and No. 3 Hair Perfector for weekly at-home OLAPLEX Repair Treatments,” says Sarai Speer, OLAPLEX advocate.
OLAPLEX No. 0, 1, No. 2 and No. 3 are strictly reparative products and help with the ability to maintain the benefits of conditioning and protein treatments.
For other benefits, like moisture Speer says, “I recommend No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and No.5 Bond Maintenance conditioner for daily or every wash shampoo and conditioner. I also recommend No.8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask as a hydrating mask once a week or every other week depending on what the hair needs. No.6 Bond Smoother and No.7 Bonding Oil are my go-to for styling.”
And Speer says the new OLAPLEX No.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo is a must- have for all her clients.
At-Home Care & Repair
“And every bowl of lightener gets either 1/32 or 1/16 OLAPLEX No. 1 Bond Multiplier,” Speer says. “Each bowl of color/toner gets the No.1 Bond Multiplier as well, and I finish off the service with OLAPLEX No.2 Bond Perfector followed by a protein or hydrating mask, depending on what the hair needs.”
Danielle Frank, OLAPLEX spokesperson and podcast host, says whether you’re doing a simple root touch up or an intensive color correction, OLAPLEX helps keep your client’s hair healthy and strong.
“When we use chemicals in services, we are compromising the hair, causing damage that varies depending on a client’s hair health, the service they're getting, and their personal habits,” she says. “When adding OLAPLEX No.1 Bond Multiplier to your color or lightener formula, it ensures the hair has added protection by working to relink disulfide bonds that are broken during the chemical service.”
Speer says her non-color clients also have damage from styling and can benefit from the shine and moisture that OLAPLEX shampoo and conditioner provide every wash cycle.
“Then I recommend they follow with OLAPLEX No.9 Bond Protector Nourishing Hair Serum before adding No.6 Bond Smoother and No.7 Bonding Oil,” she says. “This is the perfect combination of products to give that smooth, shiny, healthier-looking hair they desire.”
Frank acknowledges clients are investing a lot in their hair when they get a service, and as their beauty professional, she wants to see her hard work maintained at home.
“The OLAPLEX at-home retail portfolio of products ensure clients get longevity on their investment, and for stylists, a gorgeous walking billboard for our business,” she says.
The OLAPLEX Difference
Because OLAPLEX works on every hair type, from stick straight to mega curls, all clients can benefit—especially color clients.
“I am a blonding and color correction expert, and an educator,” says Speer, “And OLAPLEX is essential to maintain and repair the hair's integrity before, during, and after chemical services.”
Because of her work with blondes, Speer says OLAPLEX has changed her career.
“I have built my dream clientele of clients seeking luxury blonding and color correction services,” she adds. “It’s rewarding to assist my clients in achieving their ideal blonde shade while utilizing OLAPLEX to help improve the health and strength of their hair. They leave my chair feeling happy and confident, even when they were initially unsure about whether going blonde was the right choice for them.”
“I truly could not do it without these amazing products that help me and my clients' hair every step of the way.”
Speer starts her chemical services with an in-salon OLAPLEX Stand-Alone Treatment, adding a half ounce of OLAPLEX No. 1 Bond Multiplier to three ounces of filtered water. She applies to hair and leaves it for five minutes. Then (without rinsing), she adds No. 2 Bond Perfector from root to end for 10-20 minutes. Then she shampoos and conditions.

And OLAPLEX works on all hair types, strengthening the entire hair strand for immediate results clients can see and feel due to its active Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate, the core of the OLAPLEX chemistry is found in every OLAPLEX product.
This ingredient works internally to re-link damaged hair bonds, a claim other products make, but is not always true.
Check your products for patented chemistry that’s capable of re-linking the Disulfide bond. If the products consist of film formers, oils, conditioning agents, keratin or amino acids, but no new chemistry, chances are it falls into the protein or deep conditioner category. While these products are essential for healthy hair, they are not capable of re-linking the Disulfide bonds.
“Bond repair is a blanket statement, meaning that it encompasses more than just one type of bond,” says Popescu. “It’s important to understand the ingredients, chemical makeup, and design of each product to really understand the product’s capabilities and benefits.”
