SALON TODAY’s 2024
Let’s face it, the day-to-day challenges of leading a salon, spa or barbershop continue to get harder and harder. Costs are rising faster then ever, it’s more challenging to recruit and retain staff, and clients are becoming more demanding.
Successful owners know the best business strategy is to not go it alone. They know how to identify where they need help and then reach out for it. In fact, 64% of the 2024 SALON TODAY 200 reported they have worked with a professional business coach or expert consultant in the past year.
A coach or expert business resource can identify your business’s vulnerabilities, help you implement customized systems and programs, offer expert advice, cheer you to success, and maybe most importantly, hold you accountable to the goals you set for yourself.
The 2024 Coaches, Consultants and Business Resources Directory helps you on your journey for finding the right expert to address your needs. In each profile, our experts explain who they are, why they’re different, how they work with a client and where you can follow them. Then to give you a flavor for each one’s unique coaching style, we put to them test in ‘Tackling The Tough Questions,’ by giving them a top business challenge and asking their advice.

Flexing Your Leadership Muscle
What leadership muscles do you need to flex to effectively lead and inspire your people to think for themselves?
Answered by John Palmieri, 124GO
Do you understand when you need to take a management approach by ensuring you have clearly explained your expectations and desired outcomes? This is a discussion we have often with the leaders we support as both styles are critical to your success and your team’s success.
Leadership is about how you motivate and inspire others to think for themselves, while supporting them along the way by being a sounding board, coach and mentor for your people. It goes without saying that you must role model the behaviors you expect to see in others, as leadership is very much an inside-out job.
Management is often very task-focused, and it is critical that you are clear and concise in your communication as you define what is expected of your people. The definition of management is often described as being more hands-on and being willing to jump into the trenches with your people when they need you.
Leadership is not primarily about what you do, it is more about who you are and how you are showing up for others. It is more about being than doing, more about simplicity than complexity. It is about authenticity and creating an environment where people feel comfortable being themselves.
Managers administer; leaders innovate.
Managers maintain; leaders develop.
Managers focus on systems and structure; leaders focus on people.
Managers rely on control; leaders inspire trust.
Managers have a short-range view; leaders have a long-range perspective.
Managers ask how and when; leaders ask why.
Managers do things right; leaders do the right thing.
The most effective and impactful leaders know how to pivot between leading and managing as both are equally important to create a high-performing culture within an organization. Leaning into only one style will create challenges for individuals and teams, and it will limit your ability to grow upwards on the leadership ladder.
Let’s get growing!

Building that Book
What is the most effective way to build clientele?
Answered by Georgina Davis, Cosmetology Working Group
There are many salons that are competing for the same clientele. I recommend several effective ways, such as finding out what makes you unique that will help you stand out from everyone else. This can be for an individual or a large company. We can all provide haircutting services, but do you have someone in your salon that specialized in razor cutting or naturally curly hair?
Are there everyday things you can implement that will help build your clientele, such as responding back to appointment requests within a specific timeframe, such as two hours. Do you offer flexible scheduling for your clients through phone calls, text messaging, emailing, website, etc.? Some clients may not be able to call and make an appointment, but can text during a meeting to schedule. Offering choices on your website right away, allows clients to look at their calendar at the same time and book the appointment.
We are finding that our clients call and if we are unable to answer their call, they will hang up and text us right away or even email at the same time. They want to find the quickest way to reach us and receive that answer quickly. If we are texting a response, we always respond with “Enjoy your day.” To which they say, “Thank you,” and we give them a like or a thumbs up. We hear positive comments all the time from the customer service side of our business. People want to know that you received their message.
Clients also tend to put us into their ‘contact list’ for future reference.
Virtual visits are taking trend also. Maybe a client doesn’t know what they need or how to book their own appointment. Have them schedule a virtual visit through Facetime, Google Meeting, Zoom, etc., for 10 minutes so that someone can talk to them, see their hair and assess what they may need. Create solutions that are unique to the individual.
Think about how we built our clientele 30 years ago. We mailed birthday cards to clients, but now if you don’t want to spend the money on cards and postage, you can send a virtual birthday card that they can open through an email or text message with a birthday gif. It is easier, takes less time and doesn’t cost anything, yet today’s clients don’t receive many birthday cards from salons. Take it one step further, and send out sympathy, anniversary, new baby, congratulatory texts and emails—all for free!
Hand out your business cards. Many individuals do not even print them anymore. Send out an email or text message business card. These are all ways to make an impression with your customer service or marketing skills, and clients will remember you.
Having the Tough Chat
How do I start a difficult conversation?
Answered by Bonnie Bonadeo, Bonnie Bonadeo Coaching and Training
As a coach, speaker, trainer, author and podcaster, effective communication is the number one tool in my toolbox. No matter the conversation I’m having with my coaching clients, we always circle back on the best way to manage a difficult conversation. Examples of this conversation could include if you want to change a policy, introduce a new customer experience, need to address an employee issue or discuss a culture or brand issue at a team meeting.
Often, the challenge is how to start or where to begin. I share my coaching process, The Communication Qube™, as a framework for breakthrough dialogues and creative problem-solving.
Start with the end in mind. What is the ultimate outcome you aim for, and what is the possibility that it will align with your values? The next step is to emotionally connect and have empathy for the person or circumstance. Create a foundation of understanding by sharing a story. Then provide the technical process and details or give them a voice to problem-solve it themselves. Follow that by engaging in social connection for the buy-in. For example, how can they make their life easier or make more money? Finally, cement the strategy to be implemented. For more, visit communicationqube.com
Like learning any new technique, excellent communication skills also can be learned. This process is effective for all leadership and provider/client communications. I challenge you to try it out.
I have supported leaders in this process for years, and offer an SOS On-call Service. If you need urgent help with a problem, send me an SOS Text.
Launching a Suite business
Can you create a successful Salon Suite facility of your own?
Answered by Karen Kaminski, Allure Salon Suite Consulting LLC
The answer is yes! But take warning, these facilities are very profitable, and are a passive income. The heavy lifting in the front and middle of the project.
You have to locate an ideal space and build a facility that runs itself with all the amenitites for your tenants, and do so with a fail-safe mechanism that ensures safety, convenience and a maintenance-free facility.
launching your beauty business
What are 5 things a salon or spa owner should know before going into business?
Answered by Amy Carter, Empowering You
Your true role as an owner. You literally CANNOT do everything yourself. You have to delegate some of the tasks so you can focus on the higher-level tasks that no one else can do. I love the quote, “I only do what only I can do.”
I’ve had clients tell me they simply do not have the time to work on the business. So, I had them list out every single thing they were doing each day. I had to point out that someone else in their company could take out the trash, do the laundry or be the one to greet every client. Delegate your tasks, train your team and only do CEO things!
Your finances. Numbers can be scary. Either you’ve always felt confused by them, don’t know what to look for or are scared of what they will tell you. Trust me, it’s better to know. Your decisions will be so much smarter and your profits so much greater when you know your finances. Understanding this took my business from unprofitable to massively profitable, and knowing how much cash I needed in reserve saved my business time and time again.
How to grow a team and cultivate a strong culture. Culture is the backbone of success. When my team’s culture sucked, I hated going into the salon. And, I’m pretty sure no one else enjoyed going there either. But when you’ve pruned the bad seeds and worked on cultivating an amazing environment, we saw it flourish again. That’s why we teach not to hire out of desperation. Instead, hire when you know new employees will add to your team culture.
How to be a good leader. A great leader is relatable and vulnerable, not just busy. I find that many owners think that being a leader means you’re the busiest one in the salon. That’s simply not true. You need to let your team know that you care, that you understand them and that you’re invested in their growth. You need office time and an open-door policy so your staff can come to you and find a safe place to share their thoughts.
How to coach your team on an ongoing basis. The truth is, most leaders are made, not born. People don’t pop out of beauty school with leadership savvy. These are skills that need to be developed, and those of us who own a salon or spa aren’t immune from it. Develop your team to be the best that they can be.
Technicians need to develop their own leadership skills so you can stand out from the crowd and become a six-figure service provider. I love taking the time to coach my team to their dreams and their greatness. It’s an honor to support them in living a life they love. When they are happy, owning my salon is a breeze!
Getting Tax Ready
My business finances are a mess and I don’t understand how to prepare for taxes. Where do I start?
Answered by Brandi Fulton, Fulton’s Accounting services
This is a question I answer at least five times a month. It all starts with understanding your business finances. How are you organizing your finances? If you do not do your own bookkeeping or have a bookkeeper, I HIGHLY advise you get one. You need to know how much you are making and how much you are spending within your business. Are you making enough money, or are you just spending way more than needed?
Understand your profit and loss statement. This is a financial statement that shows you how much money you made, and how much money you spent by category, such as supplies, rent, equipment, etc. At the bottom of your profit and loss statement, there is something called a net profit or net loss. A profit is when you have money left over after paying for your expenses. A net loss is when you spent more money than you made, often times having to use credit cards or personal funds.
When you have a profit, the IRS and state (if your state has income taxes) will tax you on this net profit amount. If you have a net loss, you will not owe any taxes on that amount because you can’t pay taxes on a zero balance.
After you get a bookkeeper, you need to create a budget. I have a free budget template that can help you create this. This budget will help you control your spending habits. Often times, we see the money in our account and just spend it instead of properly budgeting. Finances are A LOT and can be overwhelming. This is why I am here. I take the stress off of your plate, and you just have to be willing to adjust your habits.
Finding your Joy
Why is it important for a salon to exude JOY?
Answered by Lori Pine, the Joy CEO
Everything about your brand starts from the inside out. You can have the swankiest location, the prettiest logo, the best line of hair care products for sale, but if your business is tattered with a toxic culture, a defunct revenue model, or disgruntled employees, your clients will feel every bit of this negative energy and it will supercede all of your hard work.
Likely, you got in this business because you're a gifted artist. Who knew running the business would be so dang hard? You hustle and you grind. You're the poster child of ambition. You go above and beyond with prizes, treats, incentives, marketing, traffic building, and the stress mounts and mounts.
A day off? Entirely off. Not possible. Your phone is always on. Glued to your side. Heck, you're always on.
You daydream of a vacation. A real vacation, to unplug completely.
Feel impossible? It's not. It requires a shift in thinking. Once we can change perspective, anything becomes possible. Then, we get down to proven business strategies. As the seeds are planted, the garden grows.
It all starts with you, the owner. Let's get back to JOY!
Exploring Your Prospects
How do I figure out my exit strategy and start a coaching/
mentoring business?
Answered by Maria Fontana, Maria Fontana Consulting
Certainly, making the transition from salon owner to mentor or coach is an inspiring journey that requires introspection, planning and belief in your abilities.
Exploring Your Exit Strategy: Finding your exit strategy from the salon is a personal endeavor. Begin by reflecting on your motivations and aspirations.
Understanding Your Motivation: Delve into why you want to leave the salon. Your reasons could include a desire for new challenges, the wish to share your expertise or a longing for change.
Recognizing Your Strengths: Acknowledge the valuable skills you've gained as a salon owner and hairstylist. Your customer service, time management and interpersonal communication abilities will serve as strong foundations for your next venture.
Discover Your Passion: Identifying your true passion is essential. Ensure your new role as a mentor or coach aligns with your core interests and strengths.
Seek Guidance: Connect with mentors or individuals who have undergone similar transitions. Their insights can provide valuable guidance as you craft your exit strategy.
Financial Preparedness: Evaluate your financial situation to ensure a smooth transition. This may involve saving or financial planning.
Transitioning to a mentor or coach role is an achievable goal that leverages your unique salon industry experiences. Here's how you can navigate this change:
Identify Your Niche: Leverage your salon industry background to specialize in areas such as hairstyling techniques, salon management or personal development for salon professionals.
Build on People Skills: Your salon experience has honed your interpersonal and communication skills. These qualities are invaluable in coaching and mentoring, where trust and connection are paramount.
Online Presence: Establishing an online presence is vital in today's digital world. Create a professional website and engage on social media platforms to showcase your expertise and reach potential clients.
Offer Value: Continue providing the same level of value that your clients have come to expect. Your genuine care for their success will shine through in your mentorship and coaching.
Continuous Learning: Maintain a commitment to continuous learning. Stay updated on industry trends and best practices to offer relevant guidance.
Network and Seek Support: Connect with mentors and coaches, both within and outside the salon industry. Networking and mentorship can provide valuable insights and opportunities.

Why is having a physical compensation package so valuable for salon owners?
Answered by Nikki Le, Nikki Le Consultancy
Having a beautifully branded compensation package to present for new hires and communication with your team has so many advantages that it could change the trajectory of your company's ability to grow people. Saving for Your Future
Which is the best type of account to save for retirement?
Answered by Michael Cole, Northwestern Mutual
This is a common question we routinely get from beauty pros. The short answer is, "It depends on your individual situation." There are various factors that contribute to determining the most appropriate retirement account.
First, is this account just for the beauty pro? Or is it for employees as well? Second, how much do you plan on contributing each year? Each retirement account has different limitations on annual contributions. Third, do you make pretax contributions now to reduce your tax liability this year? Or is it better to pay taxes now to have tax-free income in retirement?
Fourth, do you anticipate having passive income in retirement that would increase your tax exposure? This relates back to your decision on paying taxes now, or later in retirement.
Fifth, for employer-sponsored plans, how much do you want to contribute to your employees’retirement plan? How much do you want to contribute into your own retirement account? Last, but not least, what is your exit strategy and how long do you envision working?
Picking the type of account is only half the solution. The next question is "How do I invest these dollars?" Remember, a retirement account is just an account, like your savings or checking account. Once your hard-earned dollars are in the account, then you need to determine how to invest those dollars. Of course, here are more questions. What is your tolerance for market fluctuations?
How much of your investment should be in equities opposed to fixed income? Would you prefer investments where a team is overseeing your investment? Or do you prefer a less expensive investment that is designed to track how the market performs? It is very important to understand the cost of investing, as that will have an immediate impact on your rate of return.
So, we have effectively answered the question with more and more questions. But that is what separates our firm from many others. We want to help you discover in detail the goals you want to achieve through retirement planning, or any other financial goal. Once we understand your goals and individual situation, then we can make recommendations that will best serve your needs.
A few final thoughts... We want to see our clients diversified in three ways. First, our clients are diversified within the stock market, which acts as a hedge against risk. Second, our clients are diversified into assets not correlated to the stock market. When the market declines during our retirement, it is important to own assets that are off the rollercoaster of the market. Third, our clients are diversified in tax structure to minimize the impact of taxes in retirement.
If there is one thing to remember, start saving now! The most powerful dollar you save is the one you save today. As Albert Einstein said, "Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it. He who doesn't, pays it."
Charge Your Worth
I’m afraid to charge my worth and raise my prices. How do I overcome that?
Answered by Brigette Sobus, Power and Joy Coaching Academy
FEAR is false evidence appearing real.
Many times, people make up stories of all the things that ‘could’ go wrong if they raise their prices. Statistically, maybe 10% of your clients will leave you if you raise them.
First, you must at least raise your prices once a year to keep up with inflation. Second, really look at what is driving that fear. What is the cause of it, and what are the mindset shifts needed to change it.
Money is energy you need to create to become what one of my students now calls herself, “A Money Magnet.”
Planning for Success
What are the critical, yet commonly ignored, strategies for ensuring long-term success and a profitable salon business?
Answered by Karen Hardee, Salon Success Revolution
In my years of experience as a salon business coach, salon owner, and hairdresser, the #1 struggle most salon and suite owners, as well as beauty professionals, face is seeing their chairs empty more often than they'd like. Their revenue often doesn't reflect their talent and hard work. Ever felt stuck? Like you've tried everything, but you're still not advancing? Trust me, I've been there; my passion is to help you get success faster.
Step One: You need a full-throttle marketing plan to target your dream clientele.
You must become the face people recognize and the name they recall when they want to look their best. Know your ideal clients as well as you know your BFF. What are they scrolling through on Instagram? What problems are they facing? Whether they're searching for a stylist for their curly hair or they want eco-friendly products, they deliver exactly that.
But wait, marketing isn't just about them; it's about you too! If your ideal client seeks luxury, you'd better look and act the part. Invest in killer outfits or take a course on customer service etiquette. Remember, 'like attracts like.'
Excellence in your craft is important, but running a successful business is another ball game. Even if you're the best stylist, nail tech, or esthetician, without a solid business strategy, you're on a challenging path.
Step Two: Focus on the Experience, Not Just the Service
You may think your talent should be enough, but it will only take you so far. Unless you roll out the red carpet for your clients at every stage, you leave money and loyalty on the table. And in today's world, loyalty is golden.
Don't just chase new clients; focus on retaining the ones you have. Make them feel like VIPs. Their repeated patronage says, 'This is why I come here.'
So, why is treating your clients like VIPs the secret sauce? Let me paint you a picture. Imagine two salons: Salon A is always hustling for new clients, offering discounts and promotions left and right, a revolving door with no lasting relationships. Salon B, on the other hand, makes each client feel like a VIP, rolls out the red carpet, and offers a seamless experience from booking to goodbye. Which one do you think will still be standing strong a year from now? That's right, Salon B. Loyalty is the currency in this industry, and you need to earn it!
Beyond that, follow up with personalized messages or even a surprise discount on their birthday. These small gestures significantly boost your client's lifetime value and, consequently, your profits.
What about your team? They are your frontline brand ambassadors. Invest in customer service training. Make sure they share your vision for an extraordinary client journey. Trust me, this alignment will not only make your clients feel it but also reflect positively on your bottom line.
So, my friend, if you feel like you're spinning your wheels, take a step back, know who you are attracting, create your customer journey, and focus on that. And don't just make it a priority—make it your culture. You'll see a transformation that goes beyond your wildest dreams.
Crafting Better Experiences
How can I boost my client experience for my existing clients?
Answered by Ronit Enos, Salon Cadence
Enhancing client experience is key to building loyalty and ensuring repeat business in a salon setting. Here are some ways you can take client service to the next level:
Client Profile: Keep detailed records of your clients’ preference, such as their favorite services or products, allergies, and even their preferred beverage.
Seating: Invest in comfortable and high-quality salon chairs and lounges.
Follow-ups: After their appointment, send a thank-you message and ask for feedback.
Continuous Training: Ensure that your team is up-to-date with the latest techniques and trends in the beauty industry.
VIP Events: Hold exclusive events, workshops or early access to new services or products for your loyal clients.
By consistently delivering a high-quality, personalized experience, you’ll not only retain existing clients but also turn them into advocates for your salon, drawing in new customers through word-of-mouth recommendations.
Insuring Your Business
How do I know what type of insurance I need?
Answered by Tory and Sean Brownyard, SASSI (Salon & Spa Specialty Insurance)
This is a complex question, but should be easy to answer if you ask a few questions about your business practices.
Are you an individual who is either working for a salon or renting a chair/space within a salon? If yes, then you should have Professional Liability insurance. This will protect you from any claims arising from a service that you provided. If you are working for a salon, please make sure to ask your employer if they have a professional liability policy that includes your services. If not, I would highly recommend that your purchase your own policy.
When you are looking at a professional liability policy, it is recommended that you use an insurance agent or broker to acquire it. Their expertise will help guide you in purchasing the right policy for you. Beware of your insurance policy, you will not be covered should an accident occur.
Are you a salon owner, either in a retail space or in your own home? If yes, you should consider General Liability insurance in addition to Professional. This added protection will cover any accidents (slips & falls) that may happen on your premises.
In both of these scenarios, you will be protected from any accidents or claims that arise in your day-to-day business operations. Without it, you will be personally responsible for any damages that may be awarded to the person who is making the claim.
There are also additional coverages that can be purchased separately or in a package. You can acquire:
Property coverage: This will protect you from any physical damages that might occur to your salon's property.
Inland Marine: If you travel to provide your services, this type of coverage can protect all of your equipment that goes along with you.
Workers Compensation: As a salon owner, this is a coverage that you can offer to your employees to protect them if they get hurt on the job.
Insurance can seem like an impossible task to undertake and can be overwhelming when trying to figure it out on your own. However, with the help of an insurance professional who knows the right questions to ask, it can be simplified. You can rest easy knowing that you and your salon are protected from the unexpected when it happens.
Employees want to be part of something special: Being part of something special taps into those emotional connections that feed a sense of pride, belonging, and exclusiveness. A competing company can offer a boatload of money … but it can't replicate that "something special."
Work must have purpose and meaning: Some employees stay because they're comfortable. The best employees want to succeed by doing work that has purpose and meaning. They thrive on being part of something that's innovative and ahead of the competition.
Personal contribution makes a difference: When an employee's contribution makes a difference … it comes with a responsibility and duty to the team and company. The bond between employees, the team and the company becomes inherently strong.
Recognized and respected: The best employees prove themselves every day. They step up without being asked. In return, they earn recognition and respect … especially from leadership. They stay because all they would take to a new company is their "reputation." Recognition and respect would have to be earned all over again.
Gifted and talented coworkers: The best employees are almost always surrounded by other gifted and talented coworkers. Their creativity feeds off one another. The best employees stay because of the inherent growth and shared learning experiences that surround them.
Mentored to achieve full potential: There's something about being part of a company that takes helping employees achieve their full potential seriously. Retention demands an ongoing career development challenge that keeps employees so engaged … they have little interest in recruitment offers or striking out on their own.
Trust in leadership: Employees must trust that leaders have their back. Employees leave when they have to keep looking over their shoulders. Great employees stay when trust is a living core value.
Emotionally invested in their work and the company: There is a point where an employee's passion for their work and the vision/mission of the company intersect. It makes what the company stands for worth protecting and fighting for. If not emotionally invested in the work and the company, work is just work — and it doesn't matter where it's done.
Culture is irreplaceable: Culture reflects leadership. When the culture is pure, free of drama, empowering, and trustworthy … it becomes the company's most effective employee retention tool. Great employees stay because separating from the culture is a deeply personal and professional price to pay.
Security in fair compensation: Money becomes a factor when fairness in compensation is compromised. Hard work deserves to be fair compensated. Employees stay when they can focus on doing great work … and trust they will be fairly compensated.
Holding Onto Your Team
Losing service providers is so costly and disruptive. What are the best strategies to retain them?
Answered by Michael Yost, Strategies
Employees stay because of what surrounds them, encourages them, nurtures them, pushes them, cares for them … and rewards them.
Here's a 10-point checklist of must-do employee retention strategies:
It's about what the company stands for and creating an inseparable bond with the hearts and minds of its employees.
Finding the Work/Life Balance
How do you maintain work/life balance as a small business owner?
Answered by Peter Mahoney, president SSBC
I plan my schedule a full year in advance. Personal vacations, time with family and friends and my hobbies go into my calendar first. Even if I am not sure yet what exactly we are doing, I know that our time is secured. This way, work events can be filled in around the most important aspects of my life.
Only Handle Things Once: I only handle things once. For example, instead of checking emails and messages non-stop throughout my day, I block time in my calendar to do “clean up” work. This means I only spend time reading emails when I have the time to take immediate action, whether that means filing the email in a location, deleting it or responding. Scheduling time to take action, as opposed to spending time on tasks I cannot immediately take care of, gives me more time to manage more things.
Fuel Your Mind: Reading is something I highly recommend. You are able to discover new perspectives and broaden your knowledge. My favorite book is The Alchemist. It is a great metaphor for life about how we all tend to be in a big hurry to go nowhere. Happiness is not an event; it is a state of mind. It has nothing to do with your circumstances, but instead with your mindset regarding your circumstances. Two other books I highly recommend are The Energy Bus and Tap Into Greatness.
Always Make Time to Care: I just left an hour-long meeting with one of my stylists, and very little of that meeting had anything to do with business. She is going through a hard time and just needed someone to listen to her, and give her advice that she could trust. It was an hour of my time, but that is worth it to me and that is why she has been with me for over 20 years.
You have to make time to care, when you have people working for you, who care for you and know that you care for them as well, then you build a strong culture. And when you have a culture built on trust, you are going to be able to have a much more balanced life because you can rest assured knowing that your company is ready for any challenges that come.
Be Flexible and Evolve: Anytime we are holding on too tight to our pride, to our one way of doing things, we lose the potential for work/life balance. This is because life, culture, businesses and demographics are constantly evolving.
I recognize that there are plenty of topics that I am not the master of, and I am constantly seeking out people who are smarter than me on those topics. By having a diverse group of people in my life, I am able to stay flexible, and this flexibility enriches my life by taking a lot of the emotion out of running my business.

Hiring the Best Team
How do you hire the best employees for your organization?
Answered by Paul DiGrigoli, Founder of Paul Joseph Pro
Hiring is extremely important. I am a firm believer that character is critically important.
When you hire, make sure the person is coachable and has a coachable spirit. It’s not the people you fire that make your life miserable, it’s the ones that you don’t.
Within our organization, we interview four times with one candidate, the fourth time being with Paul DiGrigoli. We noticed that people’s behavior changes within they interview with different people.
Some people hire on a shoestring, and others hire in desperation. Even though you have a full house, your hiring process should be continuous and if you come across a good candidate, your should put their application on file. It’s very important to go to war for good talent, because it’s extremely hard to find them.
In conclusion, hiring should be a top priority in a school or salon. Try to understand what it would cost to hire and train another individual. Try to save the existing person and make sure you try to exhaust all opportunities before moving on.

education on a budget
How can salons offer more ongoing education for their team without breaking the budget?
Answered by Tracey Napotnik, Founder of Salontraining.com
Let’s face it, there are all types of education out there from watching videos, having in-salon classes, trade shows to even virtually. I don’t think you can ever have t team that has ‘too much knowledge.’
Learning a new skill, embracing a new idea or even being refreshed from time to time, can be crucial to continued growth for salons for many reasons. Education prevents boredom for many team members and provides confidence for others. Clients enjoy and respect when their stylist stays up-to-date on new trends and knowledge.
So, how do salons keep education a top priority for their team without going over budget?
There are all sorts of ways:
In-house education: Your top retailer helps guide the lower ones, your top rebooker trains those who need guidance, your top colorist mentors others on the team. Ways to pay them? Talk with them—what are some things they may want for helping? You may be surprised—it could be as simple as giving them an extra day off that quarter.
Going to Shows and Events: If you are one who feels you would rather (or maybe can not) pay for your team to go to a show, then there are fun events or fundraisers you all can do to raise money to help with expenses. You can find fundraising opportunities in your local area, such as candy bars or sub sales. It supports that company and your team’s education.
Product Company Sponsored Classed: There for a while, it seemed like this was going to be a thing of the past, but many companies have returned to in-salon classes, so talk to your sales representatives and they can let you know when they are. If you’re using the product, some companies offer points for free education.
Memberships: Education is so important, and that is why I feel that every salon owner, every stylist and every future professional in school, should have access to affordable, ongoing education! That’s why we created our Salontraining Membership program. Our membership includes a variety of virtual classes throughout the year, one taught every month LIVE with a beauty industry trainer/coach. Lock in your membership now for only $7.99 a month for 12 months. This is extremely budget-friendly for every member of your team.

owing Taxes
I owe the IRS for previous tax years, but I cannot afford to pay off the balances. What are my options?
Answered by Tina Azarvand, Azarvand Tax Law
The IRS has several different collection alternatives in place for businesses that cannot afford to pay their tax liabilities in full. Below is a summary of the three types of collection alternatives offered by the IRS:
First, the business may enter into an Installment Agreement for a maximum of 72 months with the IRS. There are both Streamlined and Non-Streamlined Installment Agreements with the IRS, and eligibility is based on the amount owed. Under a Non-Streamlined Installment Agreement, the IRS requires a formal financial analysis (including bank statements, bills, etc.) of the business along with the relevant IRS forms to establish an Installment Agreement. The past 6 years of tax returns cannot be missing to enter into an Installment Agreement.
Second, if the business is unable to pay the full amount of the taxes owed, the business may file an Offer in Compromise, offering an alternative amount to resolve the liability. The grounds to file an Offer in Compromise include doubt as to collectibility, doubt as to collectibility (with special circumstances), doubt as to liability, and effective tax administration. The IRS requires a formal financial analysis (including bank statements, bills, etc.) of the business along with the relevant IRS forms to review or accept an Offer. The past 6 years of tax returns also cannot be missing.
Third, if the IRS agrees that the business would be unable to cover its basic expenses and pay the taxes due, then the IRS may place that business into Currently Not Collectible (CNC) status for a period of 2- years. While a business is in CNC status, the IRS agrees to not attempt to collect against the business during that period. CNC status may be renewed. The IRS requires a formal financial analysis (including bank statements, bills, etc.) of the business along with the relevant IRS forms to place a business into CNC status. The business is not required to have the past 6 years of tax returns on file to be placed into CNC status.

Azarvand Tax Law is a law firm that assists business owners and individuals with any IRS matters that may arise, focusing on resolving current or impending tax liabilities, defending tax audits and providing planning services to help prevent future tax issues.
Why We’re Different: Most tax preparers only focus on preparing taxes, not planning for them. This leaves the business on its own to plan for minimizing its tax liabilities through certain credits and deductions. That’s where Azarvand Tax Law comes in to help!
How We Work: Our process begins with determining if any current/impending tax liabilities exist. If necessary, we will conduct an IRS compliance check to determine what unresolved tax issues exist if the full extent is not known. We also will concurrently assist in providing tax planning advice to prevent future tax issues.

Getting a Good Rate
How do you know if you are getting a good credit card processing rate?
Answered by Christina Matias, Payment Professional, Inside Sales
Many of you have probably found that reading and understanding a credit card statement is no easy task. They can be confusing—making it difficult for you to recognize all of your fees.
This is understandable since some companies do not disclose all the information on the statements, so you may not know what you are truly paying each month. The only number that matters is your “effective rate.”
Your effective rate is calculated by dividing your TOTAL MONTHLY FEES by your TOTAL MONTHLY VOLUME.
We also encourage businesses to make sure they are getting WHOLESALE PRICING. Wholesale is also known as “Interchange,” and this is the charge or cost that Visa, MasterCard, Discover and Amex charge every credit card processor. Your processor should be passing this wholesale pricing on to you.
When you take advantage of the free statement analysis offered by Payroc, we will determine if the monthly fees you are being assessed are fair and if there are added or hidden fees that you might not be aware of. We also offer a compliant Surcharge Program that can help you eliminate 60% of your processing fees.

Working With An Industry Expert
Why do you feel it is important for someone in the beauty industry to work with an industry expert, even for accounting?
Answered by Randi Rose, co-owner of Thrive Business Services LLC
There is a confidence and peace of mind that comes with working with an accounting professional who understands your industry. When you are dealing with someone who knows your industry, they can talk your industry language while also being able to talk with you about your financials. There is a level of partnership available when someone really understands you and the unique challenge you can and will face. You don’t have to figure out all the answers on your own.
They will teach you which numbers are the most important for you to keep your eyes on and why. This piece is invaluable. They know where theft is likely to happen. They know where inventory mismanagement will happen. They know your industry’s KPIs and benchmarks. They can help you to see how you are doing compared to others in your industry. And they have systems and processes and structures in place to help you manage all of those things.

Finding Your Path
How do I build a path to a fulfilling life?
Answered by Lauren Gartland, owner of Inspiring Champions
Have you ever thought there has to be more to life? Pre-COVID, I believed I had it all – my Dream Business. My Dream Team. My Dream Income, and my Dream Husband! On the outside it looked like I had it all. The truth was I had lost my passion, my purpose, and my JOY! I realized amid the chaos I was overwhelmed, anxious, and depressed. My tank was empty! I felt like a hamster on a treadmill going 100 miles an hour, busy taking care of everyone else EXCEPT me! Can you relate?
In a world filled with daily challenges and responsibilities, finding joy often takes a backseat. However, cultivating joy is essential for mental well-being, happiness, and a fulfilling life. I became obsessed with reclaiming my passion, purpose, and joy! Here are three DAILY action steps that transformed my life and can do the same for you.
1. Pursue What Brings You Joy: Identify activities, hobbies, or experiences that genuinely bring you happiness. Whether it's painting, gardening, dancing, reading, cooking, traveling or spending time in nature, what fills you with joy?
Success Work: Make a list of 25 activities you enjoy doing most. Have fun and stretch your imagination with activities that will create more joy, peace and fulfillment in your one AMAZING life! It is time to make YOU a TOP priority and implement two or more of these activities EVERY DAY no matter what!
2. Embrace Gratitude: Start by acknowledging and appreciating the blessings in your life. Gratitude transforms our lives by shifting our focus from scarcity, lack, and worry to abundance, joy, and contentment.
Success Work: Make a list of the 25 things you are MOST grateful for in your life. Read the list out loud first thing each morning and before going to bed. Watch the magic unfold!
3. Soar With Eagles: There is a saying, you can’t SOAR with the Eagles if you’re surrounded by chickens. If you want to live a life of victory it is essential that you surround yourself with winners and champions. Invest time with people who elevate you, who magnify your strengths, not your weaknesses. Who support your dreams and goals.
Remove the naysayers. Quit spending time with people who don’t see your greatness, who don’t value you and what you offer. Who hinders your growth and joy. When you get rid of the wrong people, it will open the door for the right people who will thrust you forward to reach your Destiny.
Success Work: 1) Make a list of 10 Eagles you know. Make it a priority to invest most of time with these people. 2) List the Chickens in your life. Consider how to best handle those who hinder your growth and joy.
There is so much more I could share with you. If you need support in taking back your life, contact me for a complimentary session at lauren@inspiringchampions.com.
