Opening the doors to JUUT Edina begins a sensory journey that starts with inspiring music, invigorating scents and breathtaking visuals. The space is optimized for acoustics and filled with seasonal, customized aromas. The entrance’s custom chandelier features a 22-pound natural citrine, which is the largest in North America. “The healing quality of natural citrine draws energy from the sun and promotes a sense of happiness, confidence and light,” says Owner David Wagner. Guests are welcomed with the option of a self- or guided-check in process. The reception contains three distinct areas—plush sofas and chairs for optimal comfort; a live-edge bar where guests can finish up any work left on their laptop; and an experience table where experts can talk to guests about retail and lifestyle offerings. A nearby beverage bar offers organic, fair-trade coffee, seasonal teas and water from an ayurvedic copper vessel. “We also feature a dedicated nursing room which staff and clients have enjoyed using,” Wagner says. The octagon-shaped salon features a signature staircase that wraps around a customized sculpture that hangs from the open atrium. Spanning 21-feet wide and 52-feet long, the sculpture is at the center of everything and surrounded by beautiful, sustainable palm and bamboo wood combined with panels made of sugar cane pulp that line the staircase. “Clients often mention that walking up the stairs is like strolling through an art gallery, as they can view the different facets of the sculpture with each step,” Wagner says. The JUUT team has nicknamed the second level of the salon, which features the cutting floor, the ‘Tree House.’ Striking floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the beautiful exterior landscape, complete with trees, a stunning park and a glistening lake. The views change seasonally and one might spy skaters on the frozen lake in winter or farmers marketing their goods come summer.

“Our mission is to celebrate authenticity, individuality, diversity and real beauty. We see our salon as a community center that serves a lifestyle client, who is looking for a connection to beauty and wellness in a truly inspiring space.”

Each custom hair station is generous in space and equipped with a phone charger, which can also be used as a stand so guests can record their artist finishing their hair. The shampoo rooms are designed to ‘cocoon’ clients with the feelings of calm and relaxation. The wood lattice ceiling combined with soft lighting enhances this feeling, while the shampoo beds fully recline with a quiet hydraulic lift, as well as a specialized head cushion inside the bowl that alleviates pressure on the neck. JUUT’s spa spaces were curated to provide another dimension of energy focused on serenity and peace. Soft colors and natural aromas move through the air promoting wellness. “When the time comes to leave the spa, we’ve created a seamless transition back into the primary space, using soft hues and growing light as guests leave the quiet oasis,” Wagner says. At the completion of the visit, guests have the luxury of strolling through the gallery of retail offerings where their artist will guide them on the recommended products to support their service. “After checking out and booking their next appointment, our guests may be welcomed to an art fair, farmer’s market or other activity in the park we are connected to,” Wagner says.
Salons of the year 2023:
The SOTY Judging Process
The judging for the 2023 Salons of the Year took place in multiple phases. First, the SALON TODAY team reviewed the entries, including essays and images, qualifying each entry. Next, a panel of editors, art directors and sales directors from SALON TODAY, MODERN SALON and NAILS carefully evaluated each entry to select the finalists, scoring each in six different décor categories: Use of Color, Lighting, Flooring, Efficient Use of Space, Consistency of Design and Overall Aesthetics. Judges’ scores were combined to determine the Grand-Prize Winner, School of the Year, the Runners Up and the Salons of Distinction.
While Owner Patrick Thompson prioritized the guest experience in the design of the new Aveda Fredric’s Institute Indianapolis, he knew the space primarily would function as a place of learning. So, behind its beautiful esthetics, it is equipped with cutting-edge technology. For example, all areas of the facility have Wi-Fi connectivity, and the curriculum is delivered to students via iPads. Having constructed three schools in the past five years, Thompson and his team also knew the space needed to be aesthetically pleasing to attract both students and the clientele that would help those students hone their craft. While the building, which formerly housed a pet store, offered an additional 6,000 square feet of space that helped the Institute to grow, its exterior lacked coherence—it was bulky and disjointed. “Our first step was to paint the entire exterior with a uniform color. To provide a backdrop for the signage, we incorporated Longboard paneling in a bamboo finish,” Thompson says. “Longboard is made from lightweight extruded aluminum, making it 30% lighter than steel. It highlights our commitment to our environmental mission, as aluminum is one of the most recycled and recyclable materials.” The new location boasts an array of amenities such as a student salon floor, student spa, nail spa and eight classroom spaces. Students receive an education in a real-life salon and spa setting, while servicing a diverse clientele.
Meticulous, strategic design creates an advanced center of learning in Indianapolis that draws the attention of students and guests alike.

A Welcome to Beauty
“The Institute features a showcase of student work on the wall, which appeals to potential students who want to see the caliber of work our students are producing.”
–Thompson
Upon entering, guests may not even realize they are in a school, as they are greeted by bamboo flooring, vivid retail fixtures and earth-toned colors accented by bright hues. The check-in counters showcase a stylish waterfall design, and guests savor complimentary cups of Aveda tea while they are waiting. Three televisions behind the cashwrap display stunning graphic images to educate guests about services and promotions. On the student salon floor, stained concrete flooring and modern white pendant lights help guide guests. Made of sleek stainless steel, the hair stations are comfortable and contemporary. The salon walls exhibit captivating imagery of the students’ work. Adjacent to the salon floor is a custom-designed color bar. The Institute’s shampoo and rejuvenation room is closed off by glass, and it features lustrous blue tile, soft lighting and soothing music. “It’s a haven for relaxation, and guests leave feeling rejuvenated after their experience,” Thompson adds. On the other side of the retail area, guests enjoy the oasis of the spa. This tranquil space is adorned with tile walls, warm neutral colors and comfortable furniture. Services are conducted in spacious, curtained-off rooms. Next to the spa, there is a specialized make-up classroom dedicated to supporting the school’s MUD curriculum. (MUD stands for Make-Up Designory, the preferred vernacular of choice for professionals over the past decade.” While the target market of the Institute are those students pursuing a career in beauty, it also caters to guests seeking the services of a high-quality salon and spa at affordable prices. “But we also target students and guests alike who value environmental sustainability and social responsibility in their choices,” Thompson says.

“Come as you are.” The phrase, lit in neon red, greets clients as they walk into the PENZONE Salon+Spa in Gahanna/New Albany. Nearby, the iconic PENZONE heart logo is covered in an artistic paint drip, a signal that the entire space is open for creative expression. The welcoming sentiment introduces guests to an overall energetic vibe that is uplifted by the colorful artwork created by the Penzones themselves—with Charles’ work displayed throughout the buzzing salon spaces, and Debra’s work featured in the quieter spa. Upon arrival, kiosks beckon clients to check in with a few simple taps, while a guest expert stands by to share news and updates. The nearby retail boutique hosts curated assortments for each season, and it frequently highlights collaborations with local vendors. While shampoo, conditioner and skincare products are a given, extras like jewelry, gifts and even apparel can be shopped. “Launch surfaces present curated collections like ‘Ready, Jet-Set, GO!’ featuring travel must-haves or ‘Trending on TikTok” featuring the social-trending products,” says Debbie Penzone. “We’ve aimed to make this experience immersive, not only with try-me products, but in ways that engage the guest.” In the social room, guests can enjoy a seasonal sip or grab a bite to eat. Guests are offered a complimentary infused spa water or Crimson Cup coffee or escorted to the full bar and café where they can enjoy a latte, mocha or cocktail. This space is about functionality and productivity, and also hosts clients while they are processing. Several furniture vignettes, from a community table to soft seating, provide guests a place to plug in and work, relax or even meet a friend. This space easily transforms to host events like PENZONE’s Holiday Sip + Shop or the Free to Be VIP Night, a woman’s empowerment event focused on body positivity. The intent of the social room is extended with two outdoor areas that guests are encouraged to enjoy.

A first glance at the design for Gordon Salon's Highland Park location gives one the impression of a gorgeous, open, airy environment with high-end finishes, but when you really study the owners’ design choices, their commitment to environmental sustainability speaks loud and clear. What has become a signature piece for the multi-location salon brand is its green wall, which is created from plants and moss formed from a fully biodegradable paper polymer that expands and helps filter the air. “Our son Michael took over the creation of this one which was done to look like a meandering vine, and we love the way it visually leads guests right to the retail,” Pam says. “We experimented with living walls in the past, but they require so much maintenance, and the weight of the soil damaged the walls. This one is organic and beautiful, and we have so many guests that go up and touch it.” The other organic design element throughout the salon is the bark which adorns a wall near the front desk, wraps a column by the color bar, is retrofitted in the lather lounge and is featured behind the tea bar. “The bark is real and comes from the Bark House in North Carolina—they found a way to pull bark off a tree without damaging it and they can flatten it to create board,” Pam says. The bark is a textural design element that plays nicely with the 1920s era brick walls that were uncovered, sandblasted and coated with an eco-friendly film that helps preserve it.
An Ethereal Utopia
Elegant and Inspirational
Clever quad-stations create community in an L-shaped salon that brings an urban feeling to downtown Des Moines, Iowa.
A green wall mural and bark-covered walls speak to Gordon Salon’s commitment to the environment.
Colorful artwork painted by the owners ignites an energetic vibe that is carried throughout PENZONE Salon+Spa’s social room, retail boutique and open-concept hair zone.

Hair clients are whisked away to the open-concept hair area. Here, they’ll enjoy the lather lounge which is equipped with lay-down shampoo bowls, neck cushions, aromatherapy hot towels, dimmed lighting and calm music to create a relaxing state. The salon’s color bar has a high-vibe experience with neon, graffiti-inspired art that compliments the buzzing energy of conversation as professionals mix color in front of their guests.
Visitors to the spa find themselves in the Zen zone prior to their appointment. Situated opposite of the hair zone, the environment reflects an intentional shift with tricorn black walls and soothing artwork. The treatment rooms feature heated spa beds, dimmable lights and mood music. If a client is in for a nail service, they are welcomed into the nail room which has designated areas for manicures and pedicures. The stations are positioned close enough that friends can enjoy a spa day together, but with enough space to create more of a private setting. If a guest wants to take full advantage of the peace and quiet, they are given a headset and an eye mask to encourage total relaxation. “This location was our third brand-new build since 2017, and while the concept reflects the foundation we set with the first one, it’s been propelled forward both in functionality and brand personality,” Debbie says. “We’ve learned what operates best, and those learnings are reflected here. We challenged ourselves to continue to create and inspire, and that diligence has resulted in surging sales for this location.”
Open-concept, white-gloss retail shelves with LED lighting enhance the company’s different retail brands, while the black matte retail shelving create a point of differentiation for the Shu Uemura products. Oversized, backlit, black-and-white model images create visual interest while emphasizing the concept of beauty. A 12-foot color bar allows guests to witness the creativity process, and it’s also on display for passersby to view through four large windows. “Having the color bar located on the salon floor also eliminates foot traffic, helps the team be more efficient with time, and encourages them to be conscious about cleanliness,” Michelle says. In the shampoo lounge, Michelle especially appreciates all the cabinets built behind the bowls, allowing her to stock all of the salon’s toners and glazes in a handy location, which has proven to be a time-saver. A customized Kerastase Fusio Dose treatment wall encourages guests to opt in on the signature haircut upgrade, which includes a treatment. Gold accents throughout the salon create the feeling of luxury. The Japanese-inspired wallpaper ties to the Shu Uemura brand that the salon carries, while providing a pop of color throughout the salon. “A custom-built frame around each wallpaper segment was designed to make each piece resemble a work of art,” Michelle says. The stations and color bar are topped with a quartz designed to look like marble. “There was a big benefit to having our own design warehouse,” laughs Michelle. “Because I tested Pulp Riot stains on many different samples to make sure the surfaces were as color-resistant as possible.”
The 11-foot front desk was inspired by a picture Jay took of a front desk in a hotel many years ago. It provides ample room for two guest coordinators and is positioned in the corner of the ‘L,’ so they have a view of both wings of the salon. For the backdrop, elegant black and white signage plays off a gold design feature. A small shelf designed into the desk helps make it ADA compliant, while giving guests a place to rest products while they are checking out.
While renovating the space, the owners toyed with the idea of going deskless, but the staff insisted they wanted a front desk. Pam felt the former massive desk created too much distance between the client and the welcoming staff member, and it became a place to stash things. So, they opted to create two kiosks out of cabinets wrapped in the same quartz as the counters. One of the owners’ favorite design features is the gourmet color island, specifically designed for the salon colorists to create custom hair color blends for each individual client. It also serves as an area to host a myriad of special events. Another standout feature is the semi-private, glassed-in shampoo area. Designed for clients who are seeking a more intimate and secluded experience, it is decorated with calming and soothing colors and textures.
Throughout the salon, the custom-built styling stations are minimalistic. While equipped with high-quality tools and products, the design is unobtrusive, allowing for natural light to flood the space. Counters throughout the space are topped with a recycled quartz component reminiscent of Carrara marble. Throughout the salon, eco-friendly epoxy floors were handpainted to mimic the quartz countertops. “They had to paint it three times until they got the look just right,” Pam says.
To make the L-shaped, historic, corner building work, the salon features unique quad stations. With the four-sided pieces, the Ryans were able to create 16 stations in the narrow-ish space, creating opportunity for up to 32 stylists on a split-shift schedule. “We actually brought cardboard into the space and placed it all out,” Michelle says. “The design gives each guest and her service provider enough space for that one-on-one connection, while also creating a community where guests start talking to one another. As a result, the space has a different type of energy that is fun and cool.” Jay designed suspended, square-shaped lighting fixtures that mimic the layout of the quad stations, which creates a feeling of intimacy in the space that features high ceilings.
–Debbie Penzone
“We know that our next generation of guests look for a place not only to enjoy services, but to find community. Our social room is used for events, gatherings and spa days, or guests can just hang out, enjoy a drink or grab a bite to eat. When guests feel connected, they stay engaged.”
“To be on an established street in the heart of Des Moines in the midst of shopping, restaurants and bars was an immense opportunity for us to have a great presence, expand our business and be accessible to our clients.”
–Michelle Ryan
“Our overall ambiance creates a calming and relaxing environment, while the use of premium products and high-end equipment demonstrates a commitment to quality and luxury.”
