Salons of the year 2024:
The SOTY Judging Process
The judging for the 2024 Salons of the Year took place in multiple phases. First, the SALON TODAY team reviewed the entries, including essays and images, qualifying each entry. Next, a panel of editors, art directors and sales directors from SALON TODAY, MODERN SALON and NAILS carefully evaluated each entry to select the finalists, scoring each in six different décor categories: Use of Color, Lighting, Flooring, Efficient Use of Space, Consistency of Design and Overall Aesthetics. Judges’ scores were combined to determine the Grand-Prize Winner, Category Winners, the Runners Up and the Salons of Distinction.

The mezzanine is just one of the design features the new salon is celebrating. The space’s abundant natural light and open layout contribute to the salon’s bright and cheerful atmosphere. The resulting design has a definite feminine touch with its ‘blush’ tones, curved wood pieces and brass and gold accents, yet it continues to be welcoming to both male and female guests. “Our reception area is comfortable, but intimate, because running on time is important to us at Mirror Mirror,” Kale says. “The small seating area boasts a blue sofa and slate gray chairs that invite clients to relax with a glass of wine, coffee or tea before their service begins.”

“Our mission is to celebrate authenticity, individuality, diversity and real beauty. We see our salon as a community center that serves a lifestyle client, who is looking for a connection to beauty and wellness in a truly inspiring space.”
The restroom is one of the team’s favorite areas. The open communal space and four private restrooms are decorated with breathtaking pink marble, tile and wallpaper. A ‘cloud’ selfie mirror proves to be one of the guests’ favorite spaces. The salons’ stations are custom-designed with white oak cabinetry, spacious counters, charging stations and dual sides for storage for multiple stylists. Cleverly planned, the 19 stations accommodate 33 working stylists at once. The mirrors are back lit with flattering warm light while overhead lights support the work of the salon’s colorists. Overall, the salon floor has plenty of space and remains pristine. When it is time, guests are escorted to a stunning shampoo area, where comfortable bowls and chairs await with calm, warm lighting in the salon’s signature pink and a neon sign that features the salon’s motto: ‘LOVE what you see.”
With plans for Mirror Mirror’s flagship in a new development in Austin, Texas, Owner Martha Lynn Kale experienced both the challenge and the opportunity of designing her dream salon from the ground up. “Once we saw how tall the ceilings would be, we recognized the opportunity to incorporate a mezzanine which turned out to be our most unique feature,” she says. “We partnered with our long-time architects DesignTrait to figure out how to make the idea of a mezzanine a reality.” The resulting lofted space now houses the salon’s office, a large meeting room and a lounge space with a television and comfortable chairs where guests can relax or read a book. “For the team, it’s a true luxury to have so much space to collaborate with one another, host events or just take a respite from the busy salon floor,” Kale says. “We also are really proud to include two private rooms where guests can nurse or take a private phone call. We use the mezzanine as a flex space to host community pop-ups and on any given week, you might catch our team doing one of many celebrations upstairs—we celebrate everything at Mirror Mirror.”
Beyond its structural elements, Kale considers the salon’s energetic and welcoming environment another significant design feature. “Our use of vibrant colors and dynamic patterns in the décor, coupled with a well-designed layout, creates a lively and upbeat ambiance,” she says. “This is further enhanced by carefully chosen music and the lively chatter of satisfied clients.” Custom touches like branded signage communicate Mirror Mirror’s identify. Strategically placed from the reception area to the styling stations, the prominent display of the salon’s logo creates a cohesive and professional look.

INSPIRATION CENTER
The Groom Guy experience begins the moment a guest settles into one of two custom leather chairs which are hand-stitched and designed for maximum comfort. “When it came to stations, two was the perfect number for us—it’s inviting but also represents bespoke,” says Davie. Another standout feature is the barbershop’s artwork and photography. A portrait taken by a Washington D.C. photographer encapsulates the energy and type of attention to detail the shop aims to uphold. The signature rectangular mirrors are equipped with sensory lights. “All you have to do is walk in, and with no push of a button, the barbershop is fully illuminated with light, allowing for guests to fully reveal the finished product,” Davie says.
The biggest challenge for the owners was trying to build a unique footprint for men’s grooming that was completely surrounded by a spa inside a resort. “Typically barbershops across the U.S. are built as brick and mortar standalones, with no other competing or complimentary businesses, so we had to get creative and find a design niche that spoke to the male consumer through services and products,” says Davie. The barbershop’s target demographic is middle-aged male guests with substantial disposable income seeking premium grooming services that match their refined tastes. “We wanted to connect the dots between a $100 million, renovated golf resort and men’s grooming, and we had to earn the customers’ trust with our design,” he says.

Entering the clinic, students and guests notice the spacious, open-concept design which is flooded with natural light. Meticulously designed to facilitate a high-touch experience between instructors and students, the academy also ensures that every client receives personalized attention and exceptional service. “Our barber chairs were thoughtfully designed to ensure an unparalleled level of comfort,” Provenzano says. “Crafted with luxurious leather upholstery, each is adorned with the Wahl logo, representing our commitment to excellence. Wahl Barber Academy’s commitment to excellence doesn’t stop with its design. It is at the forefront of barbering education, offering a world-class curriculum developed in partnership with Pivot Point Academy. “Our state-of-the-art facility leverages the latest in technology to provide a 360-degree learning experience, ensuring that our students graduate with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the competitive world of barbering.”

Visually, the salon comes alive through elements of sunlight, plant life and inspired architecture. “The building has a long history of industrial uses, such as a car dealership in the 1920s, a music video studio in the 1980s and most recently, an advertising agency,” Wagner says. “In designing the salon, we wanted to honor this long history of creative workings and keep an open concept, featuring many industrial elements, including the original flooring. We also looked at ways to soften the space with bespoke rugs, handmade lighting fixtures from Morocco, crystals and our curated retail space.” The space caters to increased productivity by being centered in a densely populated urban area that is home to several colleges, small businesses and residents. “Our location and reputation provide a consistent stream of new and returning clients for our artists,” says Wagner. “Most importantly, it produces between 40-50 new artists each year, which directly supports our other JUUT Salonspas in the Twin Cities area as each one is eventually placed into a ‘home salon’ upon graduation from our training program.”
The salon portion of the space holds 24 stations and 9 shampoo bowls, as well as a luxurious lounge area with a library of fashion, design and art books. “While the salon is primarily used for clients and education, it also doubles as a versatile event space,” says David Wagner. “Since opening, we have hosted fashion shows, music and community events, as well as classes with world-class educators.” The events are supported by the intentional design of the space, which includes a stage, theater lighting and professional sound system. “We have been able to host audiences up to 350 people and look forward to inspiring events in the future.”

Beyond the gold curtain is the shampoo area where globe lights are dimmed to create a soft glow and the music quiets. Guests feel calmer as they are encouraged to put their feet up and are warmed with a hot towel scalp massage. At the end of the service, instead of paying at the front desk, the extensionista brings the new guest a welcome gift box full of goodies, including a silk pillowcase, hair brush, scrunchies and hair clips, all in Crown signature green and perfectly suited to their new extensions. Then, the client is checked out via an iPad, while she stays seated sipping the rest of her mimosa, wishing she could stay longer.
Today, stepping into Crown Extension Studio is stepping into a luxurious, yet comforting new world. Jade-colored tile walls and tones of deep greens and blues invoke a feeling of health and vitality that calm the soul. The soft-touch cabinetry and gold shelving units are both timeless and elegant. “When guests walk in, they are standing below our chandelier which represents a crown of jewels,” Bowden says. “Walking between the two extension islands, they notice the carefully organized luxury products in their cream-colored boxes on the right, and a library of hair extensions that you can touch hanging almost like a curtain between you and the styling stations along the wall.”

The building Jenna Bowden and her husband bought at the height of the pandemic wasn’t a former salon or even a business, it was two apartments stacked one on top of the other. While it wasn’t totally apparent how the 100 year-old building would eventually become a salon, it was the perfect opportunity to invest in a piece of property in an up-and-coming area and give Crown Extension Studio a permanent home.

A smiling extensionista welcomes each guest, taking her coat and draping her with a black, peach-skin robe. She’ll lead the guest to her seat in one of the camel-colored Italian leather styling chairs and fetch her a glass of the house signature drink, a Crown Peach Mimosa. Gold, arched mirrors mimic the arch that leads from the hallway to the bathroom. Granite countertops extend all the way across the stations. “There is no separateness, as the space is designed to invoke teamwork and community,” Bowden says. “You’ll often see two extensionistas working on one client, which is not something you see every day in most salons.”

Thirty-seven years ago, Joseph Fabiano launched his eponymous salon and grew his legacy business until his passing from Covid-19 in 2020. In loving tribute, his son Jeff Fabiano, daughter Shannon Gaffin and granddaughter Bobbi Crescenzo designed the new salon to feel as though guests were being embraced in a hug.

Soft lighting and a warm color palette of tan and delicate greens visually communicate this embrace. “We want every client who comes through our doors to still feel the essence of what our father built,” Gaffin says. The trio’s biggest design challenge was in maximizing the salon’s existing space and making it feel larger without actually increasing the square footage. “We wanted an open, airy feel and we did this by elevating the ceiling, removing the existing walls and creating an open concept where guests could see all the way to the natural stone wall in the back,” says Fabiano. “The wall is a focal accent piece that represents the warmth and harmony mirrored in the family atmosphere and vibe of our staff.”
Instead of independent stations, the salon furniture company Collins helped the owners design cabinetry around the workstations to reflect the salon’s streamlined, sleek vibe. Tucked away but still easily accessible, the wall cabinetry features soft-close drawers of various sizes and depths to accommodate tools, products and the clients’ personal belongings, so nothing protrudes into the salon and everything continues to look fresh, clean and flush.
The space is filled with different textures that add to the embrace—from the cozy wooden mirrors to the brick over the stations and warm basket-style lighting down the center of the salon. “Overall, I am absolutely obsessed with it,” Crescenzo says. “I think we were able to capture the family aspect through the design of the space, but also because the family literally is here working day in and day out—both our immediate family and our staff whom we consider our second family.”
A Warm Embrace
“Our clients are loving our new Cloud and Feather Boutique, which has an awesome selection of gift items, jewelry and home décor,” Cloud says. “We also take great pride in the thoughtful convenience we’ve incorporated for our team—from a fully equipped kitchen to the locker area and outdoor patio—each reinforces our commitment to prioritizing their comfort and happiness.” These distinctive design elements set Cloud 9 apart from its competitors. “We firmly believe that our talented team takes great pride in the environment they inhabit each day, and that our clients are WOWed with every visit,” she concludes.
The strategic use of the distressed brick continues throughout the salon and boutique. The grandeur of the 6-foot pivoting spa entrance doors leaves an indelible impression as guests enter the tranquility beyond. To enhance the customer experience, Cloud implemented several special touches. In the processing area, a television monitor displays a scrolling presentation featuring every team member along with their photo, bio and the services they offer. A coffee bar, stationed on a vintage 70-year-old butcher block table, offers delicious ground coffee and tea. And, the conveniently located restrooms are accessible from both the salon and the spa.
“Our vision was to create a magnificent warehouse-style building that exuded grandeur and glamour and served as a haven for skilled professionals,” Cloud says. “The contrast of exquisite lighting fixtures and elegant wall coverings against the backdrop of weathered brick and cement floors create a breathtaking aesthetic.” One standout feature is the salon’s ‘logo’ wall, where an artist ingeniously employed a chalk and distressed paint technique to imbue the salon’s sign with the charm of an aged warehouse emblem. The logo graces one of the brick walls where the salon’s contractor employed a technique to emulate the appearance of aged, crumbling warehouse walls. Today, the logo wall serves as the salon’s selfie station.
For the massive construction project which became the new Cloud 9 Salon and Spa, patience was the name of the game. First, Owner Kim Cloud waited for her existing building to sell, then she had to find a temporary space for her staff to continue to work while she waited for construction pricing to stabilize post-pandemic, for the supply chain to recover and for the massive project to complete. The payoff was tremendous with a gorgeous warehouse glam salon that doubles the revenue possible from the pop-up temporary location, while development of additional business spaces in the building now draws rental income from three tenants.
To create the salon, spa and boutique of her Texas-sized dreams, Owner Kim Cloud transforms a 9,000 square-foot warehouse over two years.

The owners’ motto is ‘People Over Profit” and they say they know that when you operate with integrity, the profit will come. “According to people in the industry, interior designers and wealthy clients, we are often told there is nothing like our salon in the country,” Allen says.
The salon is filled with light, from the windows along the hallway that houses the generously spaced stations to the extraordinary and elegant chandeliers throughout. Cobalt blue styling chairs add vibrant pops of color to the illuminated white mirrors with storage built into the sides. As the overall community of Blue Ridge is exploding as wealthy retirees are moving in or building second homes there, the owners’ overall goal is to create a luxurious and elegant salon that is also warm, welcoming, friendly and genuine.
“What makes us different from other salons in the area is that all first-time clients get a tour by one of the owners, and the tour starts off by showing them pictures of the original owners of the house from the 1800s,” Schroeder says. “We talk about the original hardwood floors and the metal-stamped ceiling, and as the tour progresses, we explain where the art pieces came from and why we selected them. For example, one piece is from a local gallery and the artist used maps on the wooden art piece that is mystical and incredible.” “We also explain how we customized the salon stations and furniture from Eurisko,” Allen explains. “Our clients love this information, as well as why we selected our product lines.”
As registered buyers at one of the largest art markets in the world, Owners Luis Allen and James Schroeder have access to more than 2,000 showrooms where they often shop and obsess over which art pieces and furniture to add to their salon, which makes its home in a historic home in the mountain community of Blue Ridge, Georgia.
An appreciation for fine art and furnishings is reflected in the owners’ design choices for the salon they created from a renovated historic home in the Blue Ridge mountains.

“One of our favorite features is the new bar station in the color processing area,” Gaffin says. “Many of our clients work from home now, and they are able to schedule hair appointments during traditional work hours—this space allows them to work remotely from our salon while their color is processing. That has dramatically increased our afternoon traffic in addition to creating an attractive new area in the salon.” The improved shampoo stations also are a client favorite. “We chose to float our now-larger shampoo bowls, and the ergonomic chairs are wider and more spacious, allowing for a more elevated shampoo experience,” Fabiano says.

“Once the site of the town’s original train station depot, our 100 year-old building suffered through two fires, but the original masonry walls and cast-iron pillars were lying in wait to be repurposed. “In the retail area, our goal was to create a high-end luxury experience that would draw in new guests with its visibility and elegant design. The service floor was designated into two main areas strategically designed to feel separated yet connected at the same time. We chose large oval styling stations because of their modern, sleek design that ensures the guests feel connected to their service providers due to the uninterrupted full-length mirror. “Our space was designed so anyone can feel like they fit in. We chose to go with an iron color on the walls to calm nerves and create a sense of coziness. We incorporated the garage door and natural skylights to bring in elements of nature. The exposed brick gives such a raw inspiration, and it is very representative of how we feel about our hair sometimes—it’s a raw slate to be manipulated into art. Soft touches of green plants bring in extra color without diluting the natural feeling of everything. At our custom-built coffee bar, they are treated to various beverage options. Then, as they are guided through the warmly lit, arched birch hallway, they can unwind in our plush lounge. Clean lines and a modern aesthetic run throughout the space, and our carefully curated color palette and lighting create an immersive experience. Clients receiving color services upstairs notice the darker space and more intimate design, and they can enjoy a glass of wine at our custom-built bar. Our new design reflects our commitment to quality and personalized service. Having multiple custom client areas gives the feeling of a high-end, resort-style setting while offering them many options for how they’d like to spend their time with us. “

“Maximizing the square footage to accommodate 40 styling stations, six multi-treatment rooms and a nail area required careful planning and attention to detail. The double-side styling stations were designed and built with a compact footprint offering plenty of functional storage solutions while helping us utilize our maximum potential. The custom reception desk with its bold 4” edge frame and gorgeous work surface creates an inviting first impression. The addition of the upholstered, S-shaped bench adds a touch of fun and personality to the space while inviting guests to relax. Our outdoor private patio allows both guests and stylists to take in the sun and fresh air while processing or taking a break.”

“Our building’s rich history is integral to our design. Originally a textile mill, we gutted and restored the 120-year-old structure, revealing hidden architectural gems like exposed brick and beautiful arched windows. The first thing guests notice is our custom-painted wall mural by a local artist, welcoming them with ‘Greetings from Six Ten.’ This vibrant mural features the state flower and the majestic mountains that frame our community. One of our favorite design features is our communal processing table crafted from a local tree and designed by a local craftsman, which encourages clients to connect, share stories and catch up on events. As guests move through the salon, they discover our comfortable back bar and shampoo area, a semi-private oasis where we offer signature head massages during every service. Another unique feature is our boutique, where guests can shop for clothing, accessories and home décor.”

“The architecture of Studio Wish combines the feeling of a modern-day castle of beauty with elements of Rock and Roll. The striking white with black color scheme sets a tone of sophistication and elegance. Our front-of-house features four stunning, three-ring chandeliers hanging from dropped, round ceilings. The casting lounge, adjacent to our café bar, is reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland with its oversized black and white throne. Personalized consultations occur in one of our styling rooms: Stage Right or Stage Left. Stage Left offers a private, serene space for clients with specific needs. There are three kinds of lighting in each of our rooms, and each is equipped with a panel to change the music genre to one of 15 channels.”

“We pride ourselves in making this space feel warm and inviting, giving guests the home-away-from home feeling. Instead of a traditional front desk, we have a check-out station as part of our U-shaped beverage and color bar. Our lounge is the middle of the salon with a 360-degree view of everything going on. And, our Parlor for gentlemen clientele is tucked away behind a small wall, giving it a cozy yet comfortable feeling. For our guests who are of legal age, we serve draft beer. It is a great treat after a long day or a weekend treat to relax and unwind.”

“Coming from three generations of hair stylists in Italy, Founder and Owner Vito Exposito brings more than 30 years of industry experience and a team of talented stylists from around the world to Beverly Hills. With an open floor plan with high ceilings, clients come into a space that feels luxurious and spacious. The placement of the front desk—which is complete with a coffee bar that makes some of the best Italiano espresso—makes clients the center of attention. The lighting and shape of the mirrors creates a styling station fit for a celebrity. From the Italian-made chairs that provide the ultimate comfort to the way the mirror makes the bubbles from a glass of Prosecco shimmer, our client experience sets Vito Esposito Salon apart.”

“Nestled amidst the chic surroundings in Ponte Vedra Beach, our newest salon is an immersive experience crafted with meticulous attention to detail. Our glass-fronted entrance, framed by swaying palm trees, ushers clients into a world of elegance with warm wooden accents and preserved moss that create an inviting embrace. At the heart of our salon is our bespoke circular front desk, a masterpiece of craftsmanship adorned with the iconic Aveda ‘A.’ Venturing deeper into our sanctuary, eight white, powder-coated steel stations adorned with vibrant foilage complement the mirrors framed in rich wood and plush green chairs that cradle guests in comfort. Our fully reclining wash stations are a favorite of our clients. The pièce de résistance though is our custom Aveda wall, a fusion of artistry and nature with delicate layers of preserved moss which infuses the room with vitality and grace.”
