Beauty

Navigating all the reflections and 360-degree views meant every hair and detail had to be on point from all angles, Danielle Keasling says. “We couldn't use hairspray on set because of the mirrors and the metallic wardrobe pieces. We had to build the foundation of the style in prep, like when we're working on red carpet hair. Looks had to last!”
“The Future of Beauty shoot was a true collaboration across hair, makeup, wardrobe and nails,” says Ulta Beauty Sr. VP of Store and Services Operations Nick Stenson.
A creative business leader and beauty innovator for the top beauty retailer in America, Stenson is also the award-winning stylist who heads the Pro Team, serves on the board of directors for America’s Beauty Show, and is brand founder of Nick Stenson Beauty.
The Pro Team is a ground-breaking group of brand partner editorial artists who create content and education on behalf of Ulta Beauty. In addition to Stenson, current Pro Team members include hair experts Michelle O’Connor, Sonya Dove, Sean Godard, Danielle Keasling, David Lopez, and Vernon François, and makeup artists Deney Adam and Mat Wulff.
These top-level beauty experts work side by side with the Ulta Beauty Design Team, 21 stylists who split time working successfully behind the chair at their Ulta Beauty salons, and serving as beauty career ambassadors, both internally and to the industry.
This is the fourth year Ulta Beauty has created a special collection to preview, promote and celebrate ABS, and for this milestone year of looking toward “the next 100,” Stenson rallied all the talent. “Everyone came together to create something really special.”
For all Ulta Beauty stylists, access to top-tier education drives success.
The Pro Team and Design Team are devoted to creating all things beauty, all at once—at high profile photo shoots, industry events and across social media platforms. You see their handiwork everywhere you turn in the industry.
To leave a signature on this hundred-years-in-the-making collection, the Ulta Beauty artists went next level on creativity and impact. They designed stunning, head turning looks for a diverse range of hair types, textures and tones. Each model posed among mirrored sets, styled in striking shades of black, white, metallics and rose gold. Fashions focused forward, in the futuristic theme, with extra glam courtesy of international designer Bjorn Van Den Berg.
PRO-TIPS:
While the extra mirrors made shooting and styling tricky, Michelle O’Connor was up for the challenge. “I loved how creative we got to be with the final imagery.”
beauty will evolve
“Expect a world where we no longer compartmentalize hair textures.”
During the shoot and out in the beauty community, the conversation naturally turns to how the industry is changing, and opportunities the future will bring.
“As beauty keeps evolving, I’m excited by all the ways beauty experts will get to motivate and help people to feel and look their best,” says Anna Manukyan, Ulta Beauty Sr. Director, Education and Creative.
Manukyan guides hundreds of Ulta Beauty educators, as well as the Pro Team and Design Team, toward what’s next. Her group just added an in-person series of four Texture Excellence classes to Ulta Beauty’s robust services training curriculum. She also shapes beautiful futures by teaching financial literacy to stylists, and she helps lead a new initiative to grow makeup and skin care services in Ulta Beauty salons.
Beauty careers are becoming more dynamic, agrees Haley Valadez, Sr. Manager of the Ulta Beauty Design Team. “This means more diversity and inclusivity in our service offerings for guests, and more career options, whether in a specialty, through social media, or as an educator.”
Keasling believes multi-lane success is a viable route for beauty pros, and practices it herself. She’s an extensions specialist, contracts with multiple hair brands, and mentors other stylists.
“Career paths for beauty professionals are more entrepreneurial than ever, she says. “Not only do you need to be good in your skill set, you also have to know how to run your business, whether you work in a commission salon or elsewhere.” Ulta Beauty makes it easy to create and own your success, your way.
“Personal touch and conversation are what made this industry special in the first place.”
be inspired, stay connected
“I hope all beauty pros who experience the Future of Beauty are inspired to create their own versions of what they see, to wow and excite their guests behind the chair,” Valadez says.
Staying motivated to elevate your skill set may feel like an obvious goal, agrees David Lopez, but it’s essential. “Keep learning. Lean into your strengths.”
And keep showing up for your community.
“Spaces like America’s Beauty Show remain the ultimate destinations to connect with our people, our tribe,” O’Connor says.
“Being at industry events gives me the opportunity to do what I am absolutely passionate about,” says Sonya Dove. “Educating, sharing and being around like-minded individuals refills my cup and gives me the energy to create and share even more, with creativity, compassion and love.”
Stenson agrees. Of all the photo shoots and creative presentations he’s worked on over the arc of his beauty career, this collection is one of his all-time favorites.
“What really stands out is the teamwork that went into every part of the shoot, and the statement it makes about our industry. I’m so proud Ulta Beauty and our creative teams could collaborate with America’s Beauty Show to celebrate the next 100 years of beauty. What an honor to reflect the talent and passion of stylists and beauty professionals everywhere. We see the future of beauty, and it is strong.”
speaking of milestones. . .
America’s Beauty Show is celebrating 100 years this year, Modern Salon will hit the century mark in 2024, and Ulta Beauty will reach 35 years strong in 2025. But as America’s largest beauty retailer and premier beauty destination—and with 1,360 nationwide locations (all with salons)—Ulta Beauty keeps hitting new beauty and business milestones almost every day.
Ulta Beauty is committed to providing more opportunities for people to build amazing careers in beauty, Stenson says. “Whether you are someone just starting your journey in beauty or are tenured in your career but looking for a new direction, come visit, connect with a manager, and see for yourself everything Ulta Beauty has to offer.”
“As an organization, 2022 was a monumental year for Ulta Beauty,” says Nick Stenson, Sr. VP of Store and Services Operations. “We exceeded $10 billion in sales! This shows continued growth as we continue to open more stores and salons, and it makes a powerful statement about the health and future of beauty.”
