Three Techniques to Spark Joy through Texture, Color and Styling
Sharing your skills to create comfort and joy for guests is more essential than ever, agree these three wise stylists of the Ulta Beauty Design Team. Follow Stacey-Ann Houston, Justin Toves-Vincilione and Janelle Eyre as they go step-by-step through a few of their favorite, festive and fast techniques. Texture sleighs, color pops and a dash of styling bling brings glad tidings of essential sparkle and shine!
HOLIDAY TWIST-OUT
This classy look is great for curly girls everywhere, says Houston. “From the loosest waves to the tightest coils, the Twist-Out adapts easily, can last a long time and has endless finishing options: half up, half down, a high bun with a headband leaving twisted-out curls flowing over, or two flat twists on the side, using a clip.”
POLISHED MODERN BOB
This is not the standard textured bob we’ve been seeing, Toves-Vincilione says. “Think modern waves, smooth shine and lots of sparkly accessories.” And while there are plenty of elements a stylist can use to customize the look (he adds extensions for his video guest), the reason this technique works well for almost any client or hair length this holiday is its elegant simplicity.
“It’s easy to teach your client how to recreate this polished look,” he says. “Most guests already have a flat iron, so we just show them how to use it to create the effortless, smooth and shiny waves.” The key, he adds, is in the polishing down and pining in place.
ICY BLONDE WITH HOLIDAY POP
A wearable icy blonde with pops of earthy green tones is perfect to take a guest into a festive season, but also works all winter long,” she says.
A guest recently told Eyre that changing her hair color is one thing that makes her still feel in control. “The confidence boost we can give to our guests now, especially during the holidays, really makes a difference. We can give them extra sparkle while helping them feel more themselves at the same time.” What a wonderful way to celebrate!

The holidays look different this year. Some guests crave a big change--bring on the vibrant color or extensions! Others cherish small delights: a new twist, a variation on their standard part, a volume boost or sparkly hair accessory--as long as it’s recommended by their trusted stylist.

Work Your Holiday Magic
Houston always starts the consultation at the part. Her guest in the video usually wears hers in the center, but Houston encouraged a more dramatic effect. “We agreed to add a pop of height on the right side to draw attention to her eyes.”
The fun part? Picking out the perfect, sparkly pins or clips to enhance the look: sparkly, shiny, chunky, sophisticated? “At Ulta Beauty, we pull a selection from the accessories aisle to help mix, match and help guests express themselves.”
More guests want to take their holiday spirit a bit further this year, says Eyre, with many wanting to dip their toes--or strands--into vibrant color for the first time.
