Understanding how to transition a look for curly/coily hair or knowing when a different trend will work better for a guest with wavy locks and a fringe is a game changer. It’s the kind of expertise that sets a stylist apart.
“Everything we do at Ulta Beauty is about embracing all hair types,” Haley says. “A guest who doesn’t have long hair and mentions the Butterfly deserves a professional recommendation for what will work.” That’s where Trendspiration becomes essential.
Trendspiration is part of Ulta Academy, the year-round education program tailored to amplify the strengths and skills of all Ulta Beauty stylists. Through Ulta Academy, artists from every level of Ulta Beauty education—Pro Team to Design Team to Services District Educators (SDEs)—collaborate to deliver best-in-class hands-on, in-person and virtual education, says Anna Manukyan, Senior Director, Education and Creative.

PRO TIP: Manage your feathering. The amount of feathering is determined by the length of the initial guide. “A shorter guide produces lots of feathered layers while a longer guide creates a sleeker and bouncier feathered look.”
“Trendspiration is a movement.”

What can you do?
Learn the trends and how to go beyond them. When you can customize the cut, color and styling techniques that are driving looks, you unleash your creativity and build a rewarding services business behind the chair. That’s how you give yourself wings. And that’s the genius of Trendspiration, the new education program rolling out across America by the Design Team at Ulta Beauty.
The first phase of Trendspiration classes teach stylists the Butterfly cut, color and style, plus techniques to help stylists go Beyond the Butterfly, starting with Express Glow hair color and the Sunflower, all easily adapted for any guest.

Phase one of Trendspiration training features Design Team and Pro Team artists showcasing Butterfly and Beyond techniques across industry events and consumer campaigns. Phases two and three—and the creative trends featured—will be unveiled soon.
“Trendspiration has several legs,” Haley says. Any Ulta Beauty stylist can tap into concise trend videos. Master and Elite stylists can experience hybrid courses—four-hour broadcasts of live technical demos to every Ulta Beauty Academy location—which complement the 60 in-person Trendspiration classes held across the country for Ulta Beauty’s top tier Elite stylists.
“Trendspiration takes what’s trending on social media and immerses our stylists in the content,” Haley says. The Design Team breaks it down so their behind-the-chair stylist peers feel informed and inspired, with a strong foundational knowledge of the techniques that will help them keep growing and loving their career.”

“The Butterfly Cut, Express Glow and Sunflower Cut are all amazing services that are adaptable for all hair types.”
Butterfly layers are trending. But not everyone’s hair is represented in the Butterfly or other styles your guests see on social media then ask (beg!) you to recreate.

Like many hair fashion trends, the Butterfly starts with the cut, says Design Team Specialist Gilad Goldstein. The Butterfly emphasizes feathered, face-framing layers and:

Step ONE:
The Cut
Over-Direction: Creating weight in the opposite direction of the natural fall of the hair.
Elevation: Redistributing weight within a section to create layers.
The Cutting Line: The artistic signature that can completely change the look.

“Introducing dimension to the hair through color provides fullness, movement and shine.”
PRO TIP: Pre-book your guest! Dimensional techniques provide softer outgrowth, but many services can help maintain the look between refreshes. Beto recommends glosses, root touch-ups, treatments and haircuts.
Lived-In Color: Soft dimension toward the root, with lower maintenance. Create by using different lightening techniques or depositing depth at the root.
Color Blocking: Modern, edgy, with high contrast between shades or levels. Customized color placement.
Quiet Luxury: Softer dimension in a matte color palette. Styling enhances the color for a fuller, face-framing look.

PRO TIP: “The goal is volume,” Justin says. "Even a moderate amount of oil or serum—essential for other looks and trends—can deflate the Butterfly style,” he says. Recommend guests try dry shampoo and texture spray to extend the blowout.
Customizing the styling technique is just as important as customizing the cut and color, says Ulta Beauty Design Team Specialist Justin Toves-Vincilione. The styling segment in Butterfly and Beyond teaches stylists how to deliver the best blowouts, and how to vary brush sizes (small, medium and large) to suit hair length and texture. Choosing the right products is also key.
