Canada’s whisky tradition runs deep. Often lighter and smoother than other styles, Canadian whisky is typically rye-based and aged in oak. Brands like Forty Creek and Canadian Club remain staples but the newer story is in craft spirits.
But Canada also produces high-quality still and sparkling wines, particularly from cooler climate regions like the Niagara Peninsula and Prince Edward County. These areas are known for fresh, mineral-driven wines including Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir.
Canada’s most distinctive and famous wine is Icewine – a sweet, concentrated dessert wine made from grapes that freeze naturally on the vine. Ontario is one of the few places in the world where Icewine can be made reliably, and local producers have helped build its global reputation.
Wine
Toronto’s own beer scene is diverse and dynamic, with standout spots including Steamwhistle, Bellwoods Brewery, Godspeed Brewery and Blood Brothers Brewing. Tip: most breweries offer on-site tasting rooms and many are located within easy access of the downtown core.
Canada’s craft beer industry has expanded rapidly over the past two decades, with Ontario pumping out some fan favourites. Many breweries are independent and community-focused, brewing in small batches and often incorporating local ingredients. Styles range from crisp pilsners and ales to hazy IPAs and barrel-aged stouts.
Beer
Toronto bars and bottle shops often carry Ontario cider alongside local beer and wine, making it easy to explore.
Ontario cider makers are reviving traditional methods and working with heritage apple varieties to produce a range of distinctive ciders. Many aim for drier, more structured styles and experiment with wild fermentation, co-fermentation with berries or wine grapes and barrel aging.
