What is disruption and why does it matter?

The U.S. has long been a source and driver of disruptive innovation—spearheading inventions that have transformed society across the globe. Yet, for all its potential, the benefits of innovation have not always been equitably distributed.
Roughly a third of Americans (35%) responding to an independent survey commissioned by Philip Morris International (PMI) feel that new technologies and innovations are not accessible to all citizens today. And in times of crisis, such disparities can intensify. As we face a global energy crisis, for example, how affordable are solutions such as switching to solar energy or changing to energy-efficient devices? What benefits do the world’s most disadvantaged citizens derive from new, life-changing technologies they can’t possibly afford?
At PMI, we are leveraging innovation to transform for good and deliver a smoke-free future. In our sector and beyond, we believe we can drive more equitable outcomes by working with all impacted parties. From prioritizing equitability and accessibility in innovation pipelines and commercial processes to implementing regulations that make innovation more affordable and accessible, leaders in business and government can ensure innovation achieves its full potential.
Join us in exploring this series and discussing how we can make innovation work for all.

The colossal challenges our world faces in 2022 would be insurmountable in the absence of society’s most potent resources: science and technology. In the past two decades alone, experts in these fields have developed mind-controlled exoskeleton prosthetics, sequenced the genome of a cancer patient, created a computer chip that mimics the human brain, and grown meat in a lab, with potentially significant implications for the fight against climate change.
Philip Morris International (PMI) is in the midst of a profound corporate transformation. Over the last decade, PMI has invested billions of dollars to accelerate toward the ultimate objective of becoming a smoke-free company, driven by science and technology.
To advance societal progress, CEO Jacek Olczak has called for a new approach in which “science prevails and everyone works together with a sense of urgency and a common purpose.”
With this series, we seek to promote a rich and productive conversation around how science and technology can be harnessed for the greater good, producing innovations in critical areas such as climate change, hunger eradication, disability access, and more.
We invite everyone to take part.
