A Few Words From Priya
I wrote an article recently on – I heard from many of you on how this resonated with you. The rise of Omicron, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, inflation, recession, political unrest –– the last 12 months have been characterized by instability and insecurity, crisis after crisis. Within our own microcosm of Bright Horizons and Marketing we have seen a lot of change for the past 18 months and perhaps can be characterized as a permacrisis too :)
But what strikes me is that, despite all of that change and turmoil, we rose to the challenge. We came out/ are coming out the other side in new and unexpected ways. And we learned and grew. We’re just not giving ourselves enough credit for how well we’ve done!

leadership in Permacrisis
Change is messy and inevitable – but manageable
Let’s be honest: 2023 might not be much different in terms of the market outlook and the continuing looming overhang of a recession. I am trying to outline 3 things that might help you navigate this better.
1. Refine your personal approach. What will your mindset be? Will you be optimistic? Brave? Will you rush through the change, or will you give yourself time to explore the transition and its opportunities? Will you be kind to yourself and your colleagues? Will you give yourself moments of grace? Will you actively practice gratitude? At the end of the day, how you lead yourself through a crisis impacts how you come out of it, so try to get clear on how you want to navigate change. And remember: You’re going to be okay.

2. Continue to drive transformation. Yes, even in the midst of a crisis! The reality is, if you’re just reacting to change, you’re not taking advantage of the opportunity to make the change work for you. There really is possibility for change and growth everywhere, so constantly seek feedback from your team peers, leaders about external forces, customers, and partners. And create a culture of psychological safety so your team feels comfortable giving that feedback.
3. Find the right tools. We need practices and processes to help us lead and manage through change. Think of scenarios and that is one option to help you think through the situation and consider the economic, political, and social ramifications. The future might seem uncertain and complex, but breaking it down into various scenarios and identifying actions you can take can help you lead through a permacrisis.
If nothing else, change and crises are opportunities to slow down and evaluate our values and beliefs. But hopefully you pause to consider how you want to react to change moving forward. Because maybe change and crises are becoming the new norm.
I’m not one to make predictions, but I do believe moments of reflection are necessary as you plan for the future personally and professionally
And please remember we can all look at the distance to the peak or we can look at the distance from the ground – it has served me well to celebrate the small wins and look forward to the journey and not to get overwhelmed by it
I can’t wait to see all of you at the summit end of the month.

Think about our next value, “We build process to work for the organization, not ourselves” and nominate someone for June who exemplifies what it means to consistently cross-collaborate and works to fix process as needed.
