Our communities, our people, and our retail partners mean everything to us. That makes environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles key to how we operate. We want our properties to promote sustainability and our actions to follow a north star of inclusivity, understanding that our impact really matters long-term. We are focused on our goals of meeting – and exceeding – our forward-looking ESG targets while revolutionizing the retail industry.

How we're making a change
Why net zero?
In March 2021, Brookfield Asset Management committed to the Net Zero Asset Manager’s Initiative (NZAMI) across all markets and sectors, with the goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. For the retail business that means developing a retail-specific pathway to net zero through capital investments (retrofits, technologies, alternate fuels), renewables procurement, or carbon offsets (as a last option). We have continued to invest in solar installations at our malls that both reduce our carbon footprint and generate positive financial savings across our portfolio. We generated more than 59 million kilowatt hours of on-site solar electricity in 2021, provided more than 500,000 charges for electric vehicles, and had more than 59 million square feet of our property achieve IREM’s Certified Sustainable Property status.
Since 2020, our properties have stepped up to support their local neighborhoods. In 2021, we held more than 1,400 community events, donated more than 1.9 million meals through events like food donation drive-ups, raised $1.3 million for charitable partners, hosted everything from youth and education programs to COVID-19 vaccination sites, supported natural disaster relief, and more. We want our centers to be community hubs and we’re honored by the continued opportunity to provide essential resources to our neighbors.
We believe in fostering an inclusive and transparent culture for our communities, retailers, employees, consumers, and stakeholders. One that celebrates collaboration and strives for diverse talent and equal representation at all levels. Acting on our commitment to break down systemic racial barriers, in 2021 we launched Partner to Empower, which has already funded brick-and-mortar store construction for more than 45 Black- and minority-owned businesses across our portfolio. We also partnered with Cameron-Brooks and CAI Neurodiverse Solutions to hire veteran talent and individuals on the autism spectrum into roles within our portfolio.
Reduced Scope 1 & 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 52%, far exceeding our goal of 40%
In the past year, we've worked hard to make progress toward – and in some cases already surpass – our 2022 ESG goals.
