Lucerne is ranked as one of the prettiest cities in the world — and its storybook charm and backdrop of the Swiss Alps make it an adorable place to stay. But it’s more than just a pretty place: It also has a rich history with original structures that have been restored or maintained for both locals and tourists to enjoy.

Ride the Pilatus Railway
While you’re in Lucerne, you have to ride the world's steepest cogwheel railway. This modern engineering miracle was built in 1889 and uses two horizontally rotating cogwheels to propel itself up the steep Mount Pilatus incline. The train operates May - November and features panoramic views of the Swiss Alps and Lake Lucerne.
When you think of chocolate, you probably think of Switzerland. Swiss chocolate's signature creamy, melt-in-your-mouth texture is created using the conching method, which was patented in 1879 by Swiss native Rodolphe Lindt. Max Chocolatiers in Lucerne offers workshops and tastings so you can try your hand at this culinary art form.

Built in 1333, Kapellbrücke is one of the oldest and unique wooden bridges in Europe, with more than 100 17th-century paintings hanging from its rafters. If this structure looks familiar, it's because you've probably seen it before: The bridge and tower are among the most photographed scenes in all of Switzerland.

These medieval city walls date back to as early as the 13th century. They were originally built to fortify the town, and new towers were built as the town’s land holdings began to grow. There are nine towers total, three of which are open to the public to get a birds-eye view of the city.

Try a local bakery favorite that combines Swiss chocolate chips with a flaky, round bread bun. Confiserie Bachmann is considered one of the best places to go for this sweet treat, and has several locations around Lucerne and throughout the country.

EAT & DRINK
Bring your reusable bottle with you to Lucerne because there are more than 200 fountains throughout the city with fresh, locally sourced drinking water. Most of the water is transported via an intricate water-collecting system at the base of Mount Pilatus.

Originally used to herd cattle, alpine yodeling has developed into an iconic musical genre in the Central Alps. The technique requires a rapid vocal shift between a deeper chest voice and a higher falsetto voice to produce that iconic yodel sound. We recommend practicing in the daytime hours so as not to disturb your neighbors.

During the last Ice Age, Lucerne was under a thick layer of ice. Over 20,000 years later, the massive kettle basins, or potholes, created by melted glaciers, are prominently displayed in the museum's Glacier Garden. The museum also houses the world's oldest large-scale landscape relief model.
