Grind and Unwind with Alex Lieberman
Morning Brew's Alex Lieberman has a reputation for being impressive—and we're not just saying that because he's our boss. He co-founded a media company from a dorm room, went from CEO to Executive Chairman before his 28th birthday, and we're willing to bet that he doesn't even need to set an alarm in the mornings.
So what keeps him fueling this rocket ship we—well, he—calls Morning Brew? Keeping a healthy mindset by way of a fine-tuned fitness regimen that gets him outside, gets in some miles, and gets in some solid puppy time. You’ll see what we mean in this BTS look (literally) at our boss’s life outside of the Brew.
While Alex has been dedicated to improving everyone's mornings via email newsletter since 2015, he's carved out a fitness regimen that helps him keep going during the week and unwind during the weekend. An avid runner and lover of the outdoors, he naturally pairs energizing weekday runs with family hikes on the weekend—all in his home state of New Jersey, and often in his HOKA ONE ONE shoes.
The Weekend Unwind
On the weekends, it's a different story. You may think business people with fancy titles wear boring suits and sip martinis on weekends—but that’s not exactly Alex’s style.
Sure, he knows a thing (or 10 million) about the business and startup world, but he also knows where you can find waterfalls, hiking trails, and some pretty sweet lookouts in New Jersey. Yep, you read that correctly. Jersey has waterfalls.
Got some waterfalls to explore? Alex’s sporting the just-released HOKA Anacapa hiking boot. This waterproof hiker is engineered from certified lightweight leather, includes an Achilles-cradling pull tab, and utilizes a Vibram® Megagirp outsole for super traction for any terrain.
Alex opts for South Mountain Reservation on most weekends. Just a stone’s throw away from his hometown, it’s where he can take a breath in the company of his family and pooch. Fresh air, green space, and peace of mind—you get the appeal.
There’s a whole host of people who say nature is healing, and Alex is definitely one of them. He may sneak in a quick email or take note of an idea that pops up, but that’s part of it—enough relaxation and diversion to allow those creative juices to keep flowing. That is until his pup starts doing puppy things and needs a “Rambo, good boy” to keep him from eating who knows what.
Can’t stop staring at the adorable pup? That’s Rambo. His furry face occasionally makes a cameo on Zoom, but we can now say with certainty that he is just as fluffy and cute IRL.
Hiking is when I'm taking care of myself and operating on my own schedule versus answering to people on their schedules.
Side note: Rambo also runs a lot. But Alex is used to problem-solving at a startup and somehow still possesses the energy of a college student, so it’s safe to say Alex can keep up with his high-energy puppy antics (well, generally).
By now we hope you see that Alex is not just a seriously impressive business person, he’s seriously an adventurous, authentic and inquisitive human being. We’re not just saying that because he’s our boss. We swear!
You’re lucky if you get to spend time with him, and if you don’t catch him in Jersey, you could find him completing his hiking bucket list in Hawaii, Big Sky in Montana, and the red rocky terrain of Moab, Utah—in his HOKA shoes, of course.
Feeling motivated?
HOKA has just what you need to scale an epic mountain, or maybeee just go for a jog. Either way, grab all the styles sported by Alex for yourself in this curated selection. If you don’t feel like twinning, mix up your miles—and turn heads—with other performance-driven clothing and shoes from HOKA.

As a self-proclaimed digital addict and overthinker, he uses this time to turn off notifications and tune into his music. And this solo experience allows him to add a little mindfulness practice to his day—before the gauntlet of emails, Slacks, texts, and virtual meetings take hold.
Alex is pictured here wearing the Clifton 8’s. Considered the gateway running shoe for first-time HOKA wearers, their new, ultralight midsole foam virtually disappears underfoot to help you sprint to the weekend finish.
In those early hours, his go-to workout of choice is a 30-45 minute run outside. His favorite spot? The Hoboken Waterfront—AKA the quintessential location. Featuring views of the Hudson River, Manhattan’s iconic skyline, and plenty of greenery, it’s just the motivation he needs to lace up his HOKA Clifton 8’s and get out there.
His running time usually gets cut down to 30 minutes because of those last-minute meetings scheduled the night before—but any time is better than no time to help get his energy up and ideas flowing to tackle the day.
For me, the physical health trio is eating well, sleeping well, and exercising well.
For Alex, the week demands a lot from him, and we can attest that he’s high-perfoming and an overachiever at nearly everything he does. Same goes for his workouts—he’s one of those AM running junkies many of us want to be but opt for those few extra minutes of sleep instead.
