The first of George Lucas' prequel movies, "The Phantom Menace" premiered in 1999 and told the story of young Anakin Skywalker meeting the Jedi knights Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi along with Queen Padmé Amidala.
First started in 2008, "The Clone Wars" is an animated series which provides a deeper look at the events in the galaxy during the period of civil unrest between Episode II and Episode III. The series kicked off with a movie, and centers on Obi-Wan Kenobi.
"Solo" is the 2018 prequel movie about Han Solo and the origin of other iconic characters like Lando Calrissian and Chewbacca in the "Star Wars" universe.
"Rebels" is another animated series which began in 2014. The show begins five years before the events of "Episode IV: A New Hope" and follows the beginnings of the rebellion standing up to the evil Empire.
"Rogue One" is
the prequel movie which premiered in 2016 and followed Jyn Erso and the Rebel Alliance as they steal the plans to the Death Star and transmit them to the starship carrying Princess Leia.
"Return of the Jedi"
was the final movie in
the original trilogy, and showed Han and Leia (who have fallen in love) fighting alongside Luke
to overthrow the Empire. Leia and Luke discover they're siblings, and in
his final moments of
life Anakin Skywalker renounces the dark side by seemingly killing Emperor Palpatine.
"The Mandalorian" is the first live-action "Star Wars" series which premieres
on Disney+ in November 2019. The show follows
a Mandalorian bounty hunter, not unlike Boba Fett, five years after
the events of "Return
of the Jedi."
"Star Wars Resistance"
is another animated series which began in 2018. The show follows
a Resistance spy who is tracking the activities
of the First Order just before and during the new trilogy's events.
The Disney park lands dedicated to "Star Wars" are designed as an immersive experience where guests are dropped into an outpost currently occupied by the First Order, though the Resistance is quietly operating its rebellion there too.
"Attack of the Clones" premiered in 2002, and the film's events take place 10 years after "The Phantom Menace." In this movie, civil war threatens the galaxy as Anakin and Padmé's relationship turns romantic.
"Revenge of the Sith" premiered in 2005,
and marks the end of the prequel movie trilogy. It starts three years after the end of "Attack of
the Clones," and shows Anakin's full descent to the dark side of the Force and his transformation into Darth Vader thanks to Chancellor Palpatine aka Darth Sidious aka
the Emperor.
Disney announced in August 2019 that a currently untitled TV show about Obi-Wan Kenobi is in production.
We know it will take place after the events of the prequel movie trilogy but in the time period covered by the "Solo" movie.
This is another
new Disney+ series announced in August 2019. The Cassian Andor-focused show will follow the Rebel hero and the K-2SO droid from "Rogue One" in the years before that movie's events.
"A New Hope" was the first-ever "Star Wars" movie and premiered in 1977. Princess Leia stores the Death Star plans on the R2-D2 droid, which leads young Luke Skywalker and
Han Solo to join
the Rebel Alliance and temporarily thwart Darth Vader and the Emperor's plans.
"The Empire Strikes Back" premiered in 1980, and follows Luke as he trains to be a Jedi and discovers Darth Vader is actually his father. Lando Calrissian betrays Han and turns him over to the bounty hunter Boba Fett.
Set about 30 years after "Return of the Jedi," the 2015 movie "The Force Awakens" introduces the force-sensistive Rey and new friends Finn and Poe as they join the Resistance against the First Order and Kylo Ren (the son
of Han and Leia).
"The Last Jedi" premiered in 2018, and follows Rey as she's trained by the self-exiled Luke Skywalker and eventually tries to turn Kylo back to the light side after he killed his father Han in "The Force Awakens." The Resistance is whittled down by the First Order but hope remains after Luke sacrifices himself.
"The Rise of Skywalker" will be the last movie in the newest trilogy, and conclude the "Skywalker saga" in 2019. Rey will lead the Resistance in the final fight against Kylo Ren and the tyrannical First Order.
