Sustainability used to be something for the big boys. The multinationals with consultants, committees and cash to burn. But that’s changing fast.
In this week’s BT Podcasts from The Business Times, host Howie Lim speaks with Chen Ze Ling, managing director and group head of corporate and SME banking at DBS Bank, and Shawn Lee, COO of Crestar Fans; one of the first companies to graduate from the DBS ESG Ready Programme launched last year.
The idea behind the programme is simple but powerful: to turn sustainability from buzzword to business advantage. DBS acts not just as financier, but as partner guiding SMEs through training, carbon assessments and the creation of tangible roadmaps that help them measure, report and monetise their sustainability efforts.
Lee admits Crestar started the programme with limited resources and zero ESG processes. “We thought it’d be complicated,” he says, “but it turned out to be structured, practical and surprisingly doable.” The company redesigned packaging to cut costs and carbon emissions, trained staff to think strategically about sustainability, and even switched to electric vehicles through DBS’ green financing scheme.
Chen says that’s exactly the point explaining that sustainability is no longer optional, highlighting that government regulations and global supply chains are moving in that direction.
