Staying invested for long-term gains

Geopolitical crises, tariff wars, and simmering conflicts in 2025 haven’t exactly been a picture of calm. Yet markets have been on a tear, with the S&P 500 up nearly 28 per cent since April. So how do you keep your head when headlines scream “crisis” but your portfolio is looking, well, pretty good?
In this episode of WealthBT, a podcast from The Business Times hosted by wealth editor Genevieve Cua, Victor Aerni, CEO of Pictet Wealth Management Asia, explains why staying invested and not chasing market timing glory is the surest way to long-term gains.
Aerni argues that we’re in the midst of a tectonic shift in the global economy. The old US-led order is wobbling, with capital potentially flowing out of American assets and Europe stepping up fiscal spending in response. Asia’s innovation push is another bright spot. But while the long-term outlook has promise, the road will be bumpy and that’s where investor discipline is tested.

Instead of panicking in a drawdown, Aerni urges looking at history: short-term sell-offs are common, but over decades, equities and bonds have delivered strong annualised returns.
He also points out that crises can seed future growth citing examples like the 1970s oil shock which sparked energy innovation, and Covid accelerated digitalisation. The trick is having a resilient portfolio built on strategic asset allocation with a mix of assets aligned to your goals, risk tolerance, and liquidity needs, regularly rebalanced as life changes.
