The history of the NFL International Series
The NFL begins staging pre-season exhibition games - known as the American Bowl - outside of the United States to boost its popularity overseas.
Almost two decades later we saw Fútbol Americano, where an NFL regular season game was played abroad for the first time.
This took place in Mexico City and saw the Arizona Cardinals defeat the San Francisco 49ers 31-14.

game to be staged outside the
Over 80,000 people pack Wembley Stadium in London to watch the New York Giants defeat the Miami Dolphins 13-10.
The New York Giants make history again by featuring in the first NFL game to be played at Twickenham: the home of English rugby.
The Giants win again: defeating the Los Angeles Rams 17-10.
The first International Series game to take place outside of the UK is held at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
To date, Mexico is the only other country to host an International Series match.
Another venue is introduced: the newly-built Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was first used as part of a 10-year deal to host 2 NFL games per season.
