The door has opened. You’re awake. Now, as always, you face reality. You’ve always been ready: you were born to do this! So see, hear, feel. Discover, apply and create. Experience enables us to understand and learn. Everything is experience. We are connected to the past, the present and the future. This is part of being human. Life is about living, taking risks, expressing ourselves. We are a product of our experiences. What we get we give. Experience enables us to understand, to be understood and to teach others. Experience is everything. So notice what is around you. Experience increases knowledge, and knowledge can be given meaning. Gain knowledge, create meaning: share your experience, build a legacy. Be an expert in your own way. Experience this day.

Engagement is one of the most important challenges that teachers have identified in recent years as a factor in their students’ ability to master English. Engagement is challenging at all age levels, and this presentation focuses on strategies for adults / young adults (with some takeaways for younger learners as well). We examine ways to tap into students’ motivation, ways to choose engaging core and supplemental materials, and ways to provide your own engaging opportunities in the classroom.
Today’s young people are growing up into an ever-changing and unpredictable world. As educators we need to respond to this by equipping students with the skills required to face those challenges. One of the most important assets to be developed is critical thinking, as it enables people to assess new information, understand unexpected challenges, think ‘outside the box’, make decisions, solve problems and evaluate their own performance – in other words, to develop tools for lifelong learning. In this session, Herbert demonstrates how we can enrich young learners’ and teenagers’ language learning through developing 21st century skills sets.

Cambridge Assessment English strongly believes that good preparation for an international language exam depends on effective teacher support. In order to meet teachers’ expectations, the Cambridge English website – www.cambridgeenglish.org - has put together a range of materials which you can easily access, download and use with your students. You can choose online activities to use in class on an IWB, tablet or mobile phone. The online activities have been grouped according to CEFR levels to better meet the skills and language focus of the exam you are preparing your students for. You will also be introduced to our Digital Planet, through which you will easily access all the resources above. Enjoy!
Smartphones have allowed us to walk around with supercomputers in our pockets that connect us to others in ways we may have never previously imagined. However, we have not yet harassed the full potential of these devices, that many of our students have with them at all times, for learning English. We will examine the reasons and research behind using smartphones in English language learning. We will look at ways of using them inside and outside the classroom to further learning, and we will test several free apps for use inside and outside the classroom. Finally, we'll examine how to manage the introduction of these devices in the classroom to ensure that smartphones are a tool and not a distraction in your students' language learning.

In this talk we’ll first look at the increasingly important area of CLIL (Content Language Integrated Learning), focusing on how it works and why it has become so popular. Then we’ll go on to look at the most important part of teaching young learners: the children themselves. By addressing the question of what interests young learners, and how we can incorporate these elements into the CLIL content of our lessons, we hope to indirectly provide some solutions to the common problems of pupil demotivation and restlessness. All of this will be reinforced with practical examples and hands-on activities which aim to satisfy different teaching and learning styles and which can be easily implemented in any primary classroom.
Many people learn English, but very often the truth is, they don’t speak English. Students frequently lack the confidence and ability to talk. The problem is amplified by the fact that learners judge their progress by their speaking ability. The result is a feeling of not progressing, and also a paradox: Due to lack of confidence, students are reluctant to participate in much-needed speaking activities. This session explores how to address this problem by creating a Safe Speaking Environment.

One of the most challenging aspects of teaching young learners is holding their interest in the classroom. Children have limitless energy combined with an extremely limited attention span. Teachers have to juggle with these factors to try to avoid boredom, restlessness and de-motivation. Activities that children traditionally find engaging can be used as effective and dynamic teaching tools that will encourage them to use language and work hard without being conscious of it. By putting them into a meaningful context, we will see how diverse disciplines of language-learning can be taught with an amusing and child-friendly approach, thus making them more memorable for the young learner.
Up-to-date materials provide plentiful support for learners, especially teenagers, in 21st century skills: things such as critical thinking, focusing on values and life skills. But this provision is boosted if teachers are lexically-minded, and if materials support the teacher by covering a range of lexical components. This talk looks at how teachers and materials can work together to produce real progress for learners.

Teacher’s Day is widely celebrated on social media sites and the teacher is usually referred to as a super hero/heroine. Super heroes’ logos with the motto ‘I teach. What’s your super power’ have become very popular. Using the TED-Ed video “What makes a Hero?” as a starting point, teachers will consider the question ‘What is your super power?’. This is followed by a few practical classroom tasks, which aim to maximise the learner’s voice in the classroom as well as to illustrate how simple actions can have a very positive effect on the learners. This talk ends with a reference to the video above and invites teachers to try, adapt, add, vary and experiment on an everyday basis to meet the expectations of our learners’ ever changing reality.
