Tim Oates is Group Director of Assessment Research and Development at Cambridge Assessment, focussing on national and international research on assessment and measurement. More recently, he has undertaken wide-ranging international comparison of the performance of education systems, and advised OECD on its curriculum review work. In 2010 he published ‘Could do better’, which laid down the principles for the review of the National Curriculum in England. From 2010-2013, he was chair of the Expert Panel for Review of the National Curriculum. He has published widely on assessment and curriculum. He was a member of the Ofqual Vocational Standards Advisory Group. Tim routinely provides briefings and advice to UK and other governments. He is a Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge. In 2015 he was awarded a CBE for services to education.

Kate is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist with a passion for compassion. After completing her first degree at Cambridge University, she qualified in Clinical Psychology in 2002 at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience in London. After working as a lecturer for the Open University in Psychology & Counselling, she set up her own private clinical practice in 2014. In her private practice, she has worked with clients of all ages facing a wide range of challenges, including children with complex needs in both mainstream and special schools. She uses compassion focused therapy (CFT) and mindfulness in most of her work

Bobby speaks up and down the country and internationally about his love of numbers and why we shouldn’t be frightened of them. Bobby is involved with many charities and educational bodies including the Premier League, British Libraries, National Numeracy, Pearson Education and West Ham F.C. He contributes to the Financial Times Weekend section and appears regularly on several radio stations and in his own and others’ podcasts. His television work includes numerous celebrity appearances (Strictly Come Dancing), winning Mastermind and his two television series for BBC2 (The Monkman and Seagull Genius Guide). He is currently filming a new daytime quiz show, Answer Trap, for Channel 4.

Dr Hanan Khalifa leads a cross-divisional team of experts in the field of language learning, teaching and assessment on providing evidence-based decision making and developing language education, working with ministries of education worldwide and developing strategic partnerships at a global level. Previously, Hanan has held ministerial roles as advisor to ministers of education and university presidents, and worked for international development agencies and world-renowned educational firms (BC, AMIDEAST, AIR, FHI 360). Hanan's expertise lies in language testing, educational assessment, monitoring and evaluation, standard setting, research (methodology, instrument design, data analysis), and institutional capacity building. Hanan holds a PhD in Language Testing from the University of Reading, UK.
Jaideep Prabhu is Professor of Marketing at Judge Business School, University of Cambridge. He has published in and is on the editorial board of leading journals such as the Journal of Marketing. He has appeared on BBC News24, BBC Radio 4 and Bloomberg BusinessWeek, and has been profiled in BusinessWeek, BBC World Service, The Economist, The Financial Times, Le Monde, The New York Times and The Times. He has consulted with executives from Bertelsmann, Barclays, BP, BT, GE, IBM, ING Bank, M&S, Pearson, Roche, Shell, Siemens, Unilever and Vodafone. He is the co-author of Jugaad Innovation: Think Frugal, Be Flexible, Generate Breakthrough Growth, described by The Economist as “the most comprehensive book yet” on the subject of frugal innovation. His most recent book "Frugal Innovation: How to do More with Less" was published in February 2015 and won the CMI’s Management Book of the Year Award 2016.
Hayo Reinders (www.innovationinteaching.org) is TESOL Professor and Director of the doctoral programme at Anaheim University, USA, and Professor of Applied Linguistics at KMUTT in Thailand. He is founder of the Institute for Teacher Leadership and editor of Innovation in Language Learning & Teaching.
Silvana Richardson is Head of Education at Bell Educational Services and Programme Quality Manager at the Bell Foundation, a UK-based charity that commissions and disseminates research, carries out thought leadership work in policy circles and trains staff in primary and secondary schools in England with the aim of overcoming exclusion through language education. She is a guest lecturer on English as an Additional Language at the Faculty of Education, Cambridge University and has been Academic Director of Bell Teacher Campus, Cambridge and Course Director of the Bell Online Delta. She co-authored white papers for managers and teacher educators with Scott Thornbury and Gabriel Diaz Maggioli for Cambridge University Press. Silvana has over 30 years of experience in various roles: teacher, teacher educator, academic manager, materials writer and consultant. She is a quality assurance inspector and a speaker at international conferences.
Karen Momber is Senior Professional Learning and Development Consultant at Cambridge ELT. She designs professional development programmes for teachers, learning institutions, and Ministries of Education, and is responsible for ELT teacher development publishing. Karen has experience as a teacher, trainer, and academic manager and holds a Diploma in English Language Teaching and an MEd in Educational Technology and ELT.
Dr Gabriel Díaz Maggioli holds a Doctorate and Master's in Education from the University of Bath. He is currently the Academic Advisor in the Institute of Education, ORT University in Uruguay. A frequent presenter at local and international conferences, he has been fortunate to share his research and ideas with colleagues in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. He is also the President of IATEFL, a registered UK Charity and Professional Association. He is the first Latin American to receive such honor.
Ben Knight is Director for Language and Pedagogy Research at Cambridge University Press. He leads on using high quality academic research to develop more effective learning materials and resources. With his expertise in curriculum development and pedagogical research, he helps to underpin Cambridge’s educational resources with research-based insights and conceptual models.
Paul Driver is Senior Learning Technologist at Anglia Ruskin University. He specialises in immersive virtual scenario creation and holds an MA in Creative Media Practice in Education. He has 25 years of teaching experience and is an award-winning ELT materials writer, a teacher trainer and a graphic designer. Paul has been nominated for four English Language Teaching Innovation Awards and, in 2018 he received the national Learning Technologist of the Year award. Paul's research interests span many fields, exploring the roles of technology, media, game design, play, and embodied cognition in the process of learning.
Rupert Wegerif is Professor of Education at the University of Cambridge and Director of the Digital Education Futures Initiative at Hughes Hall, Cambridge. His research focuses on education for dialogue in the context of the Internet Age. He researches dialogic theory in education and ways of teaching through dialogue and teaching for dialogue in classrooms with technology. He is co-lead with Sara Hennessy of the Cambridge Educational Dialogue Research group (CEDiR) and co-convenor of the argumentation, reason and dialogue Special Interest Group (SIG) of the European Association of Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI).
Pete Dudley lectures in leadership and learning at the Faculty of Education. He taught in both secondary and primary schools before moving into school improvement in the 1990s. He helped develop learning networks of schools with the National College for School Leadership before leading Labour’s Primary National Strategy from 2005-11. He then led education and children’s services in Central Bedfordshire and from 2013-19 was Director of Education in Camden, where he led the creation of not-for-profit, schools-led improvement company Camden Learning. Pete founded www.lessonstudy.co.uk in 2010 and has been president of the World Association of Lesson Studies since 2016. His current work is in creating a global Classroom Learning Research Exchange (CLRX) with Dr Sara Hennessey and the Hughes Hall Bridge, DEFI team.
David Crystal is honorary Professor of Linguistics at the University of Bangor, and works from his home in Holyhead, North Wales, as a writer, lecturer, and broadcaster. He has been writing on topics in linguistics, with particular reference to the English language, since 1964, and a complete list of publications, along with fuller biodata, can be found on his website www.davidcrystal.com. Books specifically related to his talk include The Story of English in 100 Words and The Stories of English, as well as the chapters on vocabulary in The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language.
Eric Baber is Teacher Training and Development Director for Cambridge University Press. He oversees the products and services aimed at teachers. These include an award-winning range of methodology titles; over seventy online teacher development courses; e-tutoring services; and face-to-face training delivered by a network of trainers in key markets. Eric’s experience includes delivering training around the world in the use of ICT for teaching and learning, being a tutor for the UK Open University, and setting up an online-only language school. He is Past President of IATEFL, the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language
Claire Dembry holds a Doctorate and Masters degree in Applied Linguistics from Lancaster University. She currently is the is the Head of Language Research at Cambridge University Press. Claire and her team use data-driven methods and pedagogical expertise to investigate a wide range of teaching and learning issues, in order to improve the materials that Cambridge produces for learners of English. Claire is actively engaged in disseminating linguistic research findings to non-specialist audiences, and has regularly appeared on TV, on the radio and in the national and international print media as part of her work on a variety of projects.
Professor Colleen McLaughlin is Director of Education Innovation at the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education. She is currently the education lead on the ESRC Nurture Impact Network focusing on the developing of research informed practice in schools in the areas of personal social and emotional development. She leads the Education and Reform team who specialise in systemic, research informed reform working with Governments, NGOs and others. Recent projects include the transformation of the entire school education system in Kazakhstan. Other current projects are in Jinan China, Pakistan, with the University of Central Asia and various collaborators in Kazakhstan including the Ministry. The team also undertakes research and publishes on the topics of reform, teacher development and other aspects. She has been a Head of Dept at the University of Sussex and Dep Head of Faculty at Cambridge.
Jasmin is Senior Language Research Manager at Cambridge University Press. She and her team use data-driven methods to investigate a wide range of teaching and learning issues in order to improve the materials that Cambridge produces for learners of English. Jasmin holds an MEd in Research in Second Language Education from the University of Cambridge as well as an MA (Hons) and an MSc in Psychology. She is also a qualified teacher with both a CELTA and a PGCE in Modern Foreign Languages and has taught in the UK, South Korea, Germany and online. One of Jasmin's key projects in the Language Research Team has been the development of the Cambridge Life Competencies Framework.
Glyn Hughes is Head of Assessment Quality and Validity at Cambridge Assessment English. The AQV team work to ensure that the wealth of research knowledge and expertise in our organisation is embedded in our products. As part of this role, Glyn is working closely with colleagues across Cambridge Assessment and Cambridge University Press on our Integrated Learning and Assessment programme, which aims to transform how we use data in order to provide more information to learners about their progress, and to create personalised learning pathways that cater to learners’ differing needs. Since joining Cambridge Assessment in 2002, Glyn has worked on a range of products and services, including Cambridge English Qualifications and IELTS, and has led projects to streamline and improve areas of our work, in particular in the area of content production. Before joining the organisation, Glyn gained extensive experience in language teaching, language school management and teacher training, working in Ukraine and Hungary. Glyn holds a masters’ degree in Applied Linguistics from Aston University.
Thomas Erikson is an entrepreneur and a peak performance coach who works with European organizations on how to dramatically improve their leadership and internal communication. Occasionally he gives Keynote Speeches. He is currently mentoring nine high profiled business leaders in six countries, on their personal development and next career step. Daniele Arboit, is an educational entrepreneur with a degree in Communication Sciences. He joined the ELT market in 2005 as a call centre operator for Wall Street English, opening his first Wall Street English centre after two years. In 2012 he founded Pingu’s English Italy, launching the first learning centre in Bologna. In less than 10 years, he’s developed a franchising network of nearly 60 learning centres and, since 2015, has been successfully leading a Cambridge authorised exams centre, dedicated to delivering Young Learners exams.
Bruce Daisley is one of the world's most influential voices on fixing work. His book was the UK's top selling business hardback of 2019 and is an international bestseller - translated into 14 languages. Previously he spent over a decade running Twitter and YouTube (the latter at Google) for Europe, leaving Twitter as its most senior leader outside of the US. Bruce runs the Apple #1 Business Chart topping podcast Eat Sleep Work Repeat on work culture. He now spends his time championing reforms to workplace culture.
Jane Mann is Managing Director of the Cambridge Partnership for Education, which works with governments, ministries of education and international development organisations to support programmes of education reform. Cambridge Partnership for Education brings together the understanding and expertise in education reform from Cambridge Assessment and Cambridge University Press, supported by the collective knowledge and global network of the University of Cambridge. Jane has worked in the education sector for over two decades, implementing and managing programmes to support international and national curricula, working with ministries of education, government agencies, NGOs, donor agencies and education organisations to design effective materials and infrastructures. Jane has also worked outside the education sector, advising, training and consulting on regulatory frameworks, trade publishing strategy, communications and process redesign. She is a member of the Centre for the Study of Global Human Movement (University of Cambridge) and a BESA Executive Council member, as well as being a school governor.
Phil Hazell works for Cambridge University Press, heading up the Learning Solutions team. Her team delivers education services including publishing, professional development and research to a wide range of customers globally, unlocking potential through tailored English language teaching and learning solutions. Phil has worked in ELT teaching and management in the UK and overseas.

Alex Martin is Senior Product Owner at Cambridge Assessment. Alex has a background in creating engaging, high-quality English language courses and assessments. His particular interest lies in creating engaging games for learning, working with a range of learners, parents and teachers in the development process.
Dr Mansoor S. Almalki is an Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics, a former Dean of Supportive Studies, and a former Director of the English Language Centre at TAIF University. He currently serves as an Educational Consultant for a number of academic institutions in Saudi Arabia. He obtained his PhD from the University of Melbourne (2014) in Applied Linguistics and his Language Assessment and MA in TESOL from Curtin University (2009). He also holds the Cambridge Train the Trainer and CELTA certificates, and has taught English for several years in Saudi Arabia and Australia. His main research interests include language assessment, teacher identity, professional development, blended approaches in language education, life competencies in ELT, and qualitative research methods in applied linguistics.
Luciane Calcara has been working in the EFL field for nearly 35 years. She has been an English Teacher, coordinator and director of studies in a Language Institute, a teacher trainer and a Cambridge Assessment English Centre Exams Manager. Luciane has lived, studied and worked in many countries such as England, Italy and Mexico. She has also delivered presentations, seminars and workshops in some International Congresses in those countries. Luciane holds the Cambridge RSA Diploma for Overseas Teachers of English (DOTE) – Level 6 in the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) in UK and also the Material Designer and Teacher Trainer Trainer by the University of Chichester, UK. She has been working as Cambridge Centre Exams Manager at Colégio Farroupilha since 2010.
Tsuyoshi Kudo is Principal of Takatsuki, a private high school in Osaka, Japan. He is also a Board Member of the Educational Foundation of Osaka Medical and Pharmaceutical University.
For the past ten years, Beatriz has been teaching English throughout Spain. Now residing in Zaragoza, she is Head of Studies at Enseñalia. Beatriz is passionate about project-based learning and building strong connections with students to help them achieve their best. Beatriz holds a degree in English Studies as well as a Masters in Secondary Education.
Practising since 2010, Karuna has also amassed over 1,500 hours of guiding meditations since 2017. In addition to a personal dedicated practice that includes many weeks in personal and group retreat, she has a one-month solo retreat under her belt. Her relatability and sense of humour are two reasons practitioners enjoy her guided meditations. When she isn’t working on Mind Oasis, you’ll find her on a trail in the Rocky Mountains hiking, running, or climbing with her husband Joseph and their two dogs.
Belinda Cerdá is Head of Digital Partnerships at Cambridge Assessment English, leading on new products developed in partnerships to transform language learning and assessment. She started her career as a teacher, teacher trainer and materials developer in Spain, Germany and the UK before moving into language assessment 10+ years ago initially developing computer adaptive tests. As well as extensive experience in educational reform projects, Belinda was Head of Assessment Services for Cambridge Assessment English in Spain and Portugal. Belinda is interested in language and identity, games for learning and trends in language education.
Justin Edwards is the Director of Learning Programmes for Minecraft: Education Edition, leading on education content, approaches and learning strategies. He was formerly Chief Executive for the Council for Curriculum Examinations and Assessment (CCEA), one of the UK’s main curriculum and awarding bodies, and prior to that had a long career in vocational education and skills development. He is an experienced curriculum, assessment and policy adviser, an advocate for project-based learning, and has specific experience in skills education in divided societies, high-stakes assessment and digital skills development.
Alison Wright the owner of famous Cambridge bakery and cafe, Fitzbillies. Alsion grew up in Cambridge and cycled down King’s Parade and past Fitzbillies every day on her way to school. Alison left Cambridge to go to university in Oxford and then spent 20 years in London working in advertising and marketing, as Marketing Director of Prudential and strategy director of various advertising agencies. She was also a skilled amateur baker. When, in 2011, Alison saw a tweet from Stephen Fry saying Fitzbillies had closed, she jumped at the opportunity to apply her marketing experience and love of baking to rescue her childhood favourite. 10 years on Fitzbillies is thriving, with two branches, a wholesale bakery and a growing online business. Alison now runs the business with a brilliant team of nearly 50 bakers, chefs, baristas, waiters and managers.
Tyler Shores is the Manager of the ThinkLab Program, within the Strategic Partnership Office at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses upon reading in print, reading on screens, and digital distraction and attention spans. Tyler’s current projects are focused on digital wellbeing, social media, and the role of digital technology in our everyday lives. Prior to Cambridge, Tyler worked at Google in Mountain View, CA as part of Authors@Google, one of the world’s largest online lecture series. In addition he has worked as a director of digital textbooks in the field of nonprofit education, and most recently worked as a manager in online education at Stanford University.
Rosemary Luckin is Professor of Learner Centred Design at UCL Knowledge Lab. Her research involves blending theories from the learning sciences with techniques from Artificial Intelligence. She is author of Machine Learning and Human Intelligence: the future of education in the 21st century (2018); director of EDUCATE Ventures Research Limited, a London accelerator for educational technology start-ups; president of the International Society for AI in Education; co-founder of the Institute for Ethical AI in Education; member of the UK Office for Students Horizon Scanning panel; adviser to the Topol review into the NHS workforce; one of the 20 most influential people in Education (Seldon List 2017).
Raquel Ribeiro is an EdTech expert, Google Innovator and English language teacher. Raquel is a tech-savvy educator, passionate about motivating students to go beyond their limits and trust their learning potential. She is one of the authors of the Level 1 and 2 Teacher Editions of the Cambridge University Press Evolve series. She blogs about apps and tech for ELT teachers in The World of Better Learning.
Alejandra Prado Barrera works as the Director for languages for Universidad del Valle de México (UVM), a position in which she focuses on constant quality improvement and academic administration of language programmes. One example is the design of BUS (Blended Undergraduate Strategy), a programme which is currently implemented in the university. Alejandra holds degrees in Pedagogy and in English Language Teaching as well as a master’s degree in Administration with a specialization in education. She also holds international language certifications and has over twenty years of experience in ELT. Alejandra has been working at UVM for over ten years serving in different positions such as: teacher, language coordinator in Campus Coyoacán, and Institutional English Coordinator as part of the UVM Languages Corporate Team. Her main activities in this position involved administration, design and logistics with UVM’s Bicultural High School programme, and language coordinators’ training. Before UVM, Alejandra worked as an English Teacher for The Anglo Mexican Foundation where she participated in the Teacher’s Diploma as observer and mentor for trainees.
Sarah Lian is Director of TAL – XRS English Products department. With many years' experience of English teaching, Sarah has also edited coursebooks including Learning KET core words within 14 days and Learning PET core words within 14 days. She is passionate about finding new ways to develop English language learning, with a particular focus on AI classes and online learning.
Garrett Hongo
Garrett Hongo was born in Volcano, Hawaiʻi and grew up on the North Shore of Oʻahu and in Los Angeles. His most recent books are The Mirror Diary: Selected Essays (University of Michigan Press, 2017) and Coral Road: Poems (Knopf, 2013). Forthcoming from Pantheon Books is The Perfect Sound: An Autobiography in Stereo (non-fiction). Currently, he’s at work on The Ocean of Clouds (poems). He teaches at the University of Oregon, where he is Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences.
Lucy is a songwriter, singer & harpist based in the beautiful city of Cambridge. She grew up in a house full of music: one of her earliest memories is standing by her father and singing while he played the piano. She was encouraged to sing at local poetry and folk evenings from the age of four with him accompanying on guitar. Lucy learned to play the piano and oboe as a young girl, and at ten began studying the harp at Bexley Music Centre. She studied for a music degree at King’s College London before moving to Cambridge. Here, she studied Music Therapy, before teaching at King’s College School, Cambridge, and then as Director of Music at St Faith’s School in Cambridge. Having left full-time teaching in 2014, Lucy now divides her time between performing, recording, teaching and worship leading. Lucy has released five solo albums: May the rain fall softly (2008), Penny on the water (2010), Somewhere between the words (2016) and Songs for Christmas (2017), and most recently Where morning dawns and evening fades (2019). Andrew Nye is Head of New Product Development at Cambridge Assessment English, working on applying digital technologies to English language teaching and learning. This team are working on a range of new products to transform learning and assessment, and they run a number of events looking at how education more broadly can be reimagined. Andrew has worked there for the last 11 years, prior to which he worked in English Language Teaching as a teacher, teacher trainer and academic manager. He has a first degree in modern languages and an MBA.
Scott Thornbury teaches on the MA TESOL program at The New School in New York. His previous experience includes teaching and teacher training in Egypt, UK, Spain, and in his native country of New Zealand. His writing credits include several award-winning books for teachers on language and methodology. His most recent book, 'Scott Thornbury's 101 Grammar Questions', is published by Cambridge University Press. He is a series editor of the 'Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers', more details can be found on his website.
Sergio Juan Gómez has been teaching English at all levels, encompassing primary, secondary and university level students and adults for almost 20 years. He has an MA in Applied Linguistics and TESOL from the University of Leicester and works as Head of English Department at his bilingual school in central Spain, also coordinating the school's bilingual programme. In the past, he worked as MYP English and Spanish teacher under the IB curriculum in Portugal and as a voluntary English teacher in several schools in Nepal. Aside from teaching, Sergio has been working as a Cambridge English speaking examiner for a number of years and has given talks and workshops at different teacher training events. Sergio regularly attends regional, national and international ELT events and conferences and has extensive experience in teaching and learning languages.
