Nurturing Life Competencies and Values
Cambridge Little Steps gets very young children exploring and communicating in English. It stimulates young minds through inquiry-based learning. Plentiful creative activities and play bring joy to learning and create opportunities to develop life competencies and values.
Each unit opens with a Big Question that sets the context.
Colorful, engaging, age-appropriate activities and language.
Children are introduced to the key language and motivated to explore the theme on a deeper level, through a unit-opener song and video.
Learning Pre-Literacy Skills
Pre-literacy refers to the skills and behaviors associated with successful reading development, that is, everything a child needs to learn about reading and writing before actually doing so.
Skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and vocabulary are essential to literacy development (National Reading Panel).
Children gain useful skills and behaviors that enable them to successfully start reading and writing.
A rich pre-literacy environment is created, including stories, narrative skills, practice activities, and a strong phonics program.

Children learn to appreciate literature, develop visual literacy, and acquire a rich vocabulary.
Children become familiar with a wide range of words by exploring the stories.
Children describe aspects of the stories, retell the stories, order events and make predictions.

Children begin to recognize letters and how they sound and to distinguish them.
Children learn how to distinguish specific sounds.
Acquiring Oracy Skills
Oracy is the skill of speaking confidently in a variety of situations. For very young children, it means developing the physical and social aspects of communication as well as language.
Children are introduced to pre-oracy skills, such as listening carefully, through a program of dedicated activities supported by teaching tips.
Students build the foundation and get ready to hone their oracy skills in Primary school.
Oracy skills are a strong indicator of future success. These skills can be developed through purposeful teaching and regular practice.
Children acquire the functional language and oracy skills to start on the path of effective communication.
Children develop awareness of the importance of body language and voice projection for communication. Children begin to listen carefully and respectfully. Children learn collaborative behavior and language for sharing, taking turns, and asking questions.

Creativity makes children happy! They enjoy creative play and activities that invite them to express feelings and connect with others. This element of self-expression encourages children to explore things from various angles.
Crafting Creativity Skills
Activities based on the seven Creativity Principles are integrated into every lesson of the Teacher’s Edition.
