We start a unit with a unique topic and a story about the Magic Forest. A short video on Presentation Plus introduces each unit topic, engaging children with the unit theme. The first worksheet connects to the story. It invites children to identify, complete or draw pictures of the key vocabulary and helps them learn it.
The worksheets on the reverse pages are an important reference for teachers and parents. They include lesson contents, resources and song lyrics for the teachers and parents. The second worksheet provides practice of the key vocabulary and language structures in the unit. Notice how it promotes fine motor and critical thinking skills.
Bring in flashcards, games and audio to practise the six new words of the unit. Children can also practise the words through a song. The TPR actions support understanding, learning and retention. Reinforce learning by playing the vocabulary song on Presentation Plus.
The story presents some of the key language from the lesson. Children can listen to it in a ’real’ context. You can read the story in the Big Book, play the audio book while pointing to the pictures, or play the video on Presentation Plus.
Next, children focus on the unit concepts and developing critical thinking skills. This time, children listen or watch the story to review the language structures from Lesson 2, explore the unit concept, and, finally, talk about emotions and values present in the story.
Children explore opposite concepts (such as hungry/thirsty, good/naughty) presented through the Big Book story. Understanding the opposites develops cognitive skills of comparing two different things. It’s fun to explore the unit concepts and themes further by acting them out! The Pop-outs in the back of the book help you with that.
Time to move our fingers and toes! Action songs are great for practising and reviewing language, as well as developing gross motor skills and spatial awareness.
The Total Physical Response song, audio or video on Presentation Plus, invites children to join in with the actions and some of the words. Each time they hear the song, their confidence grows and they produce more words.
Lesson 5 is about counting. We sing a fun song and do the actions to practise numbers one to ten. Children can practise the numbers also with counting games and on-page activities.
The second worksheet focuses on number recognition and includes activities to develop pre-writing skills, such as tracing or drawing lines to match items.
We’re almost at the end of the unit. It’s time to revisit what we’ve learnt with activities involving stickers. Children love this part of the unit. In the back of the Pupil’s Book, there are stickers for all the key words. Children match the stickers to the pictures, saying the words out loud.
Review the learning with activities celebrating a season. Children revise the language every two units and learn about seasonal activities like what to wear in winter and how to organise a summer party.
Every unit gives you the opportunity to focus on Phonics. You can present letters and sounds with recordings and festival Phonics Flashcards. A Phonics song, with a listen and respond activity, tunes children’s ears to the letter sounds.
You can download an additional Teacher Resources Worksheet for extra practice from the Digital Pack.
This optional activity provides extra vocabulary practice and is perfect for fast finishers.
