This webinar will start by thinking about learning and then move on to discuss what a learning strategy is, as well as why these strategies are important. We will also consider what the future holds for our students and what a future learner looks like.

In this session we will explore the benefits and applications of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approaches in teaching Pre-Primary and Primary Learners. We will also look at the 21st Century Skills and life competencies that CLIL can help us to develop, with a particular focus on Critical Thinking Skills.

Peter Lucantoni has been teaching English, training teachers, and writing teaching and learning materials for more than 40 years, and has an MA TESOL from the University of Edinburgh. He has lived and worked outside the UK since 1986, in Europe and the Middle East, and is now based in Cyprus. Peter is the Professional Learning and Development Manager for Cambridge University Press in the MENA region. He is also the author and co-author of several popular coursebooks for students, including Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language, and Introduction to English as a Second Language, both published by Cambridge University Press. Peter regularly presents at conferences and trains teachers internationally, both in the public and private sectors, at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.

Walid Shawky has more than 20 years of English language teaching in the UK, and middle East. He taught English and headed professional development and training units in some universities in MENA region. He has an MA in TESOL from the University of Edinburgh, UK. His MA research is published in a book. Now he is working on his PHD degree on the area of Professional Development and Teacher Training. He is now an educational consultant for Cambridge University Press in MENA, based in Riyadh, KSA. He has presented many training sessions to English language teachers in various events. He is also a DELTA holder and a professional development specialist.
Helen Kenyon is a Publisher in the Cambridge Exams Publishing team having worked at Cambridge University Press since 2005. Helen has developed a range of innovative English language courses for school-aged learners (including Power Up!), integrating learning and assessment methodologies into a variety of print and digital materials. She is passionate about motivating learners to develop lifelong learning skills and to help Teachers truly enjoy their classroom experiences. Prior to publishing, Helen taught English to Secondary and Adult learners in Japan and Hong Kong.
Liane Grainger’s career in ELT began in the classroom in 1997. She taught in Poland, Hungary, France, Spain, Portugal, Venezuela, Bolivia and the UK over nine years. In 2006 she changed her focus, first editing and later commissioning and publishing ELT material in the Primary team at Cambridge University Press. She has now been a Publisher for seven years and worked on Power Up from concept through to publication as a key part of her role during this time, alongside her counterpart in the Cambridge Exams Publishing team.
Karen Ryan is Business Development Manager for the UAE, Kuwait and Oman at Cambridge Assessment English. She holds a BSc in Psychology from the University of Southampton, CELTA and DELTA qualifications, and an MBA from the University of Strathclyde. She previously spent many years in the Middle East working as an English language teacher, trainer, and project manager for the British Council. Her roles included the management and delivery of partnership ELT projects with the Ministry of Education, and a regional research consultancy on graduate employability. Karen has also worked in marketing and business development roles for GEMS Education, Beaconhouse Schools, and Strathclyde Business School.
Claire develops and delivers face-to-face and online training for English language teachers and trainers. She has been working in teacher education since 2005, mainly in MENA, but also globally as a MOOC lead educator. Her interests include multilingualism, and inclusion of refugee learners, on which she co-authored a book chapter.
