A student of mine had a sister who lived in New York, who told her that she learned "unreal" English. This had always made her frustrated and she thought the only way she would learn to speak like a native was by living or taking a course abroad. She visited her sister whilst studying Touchstone Level 4, and used the strategy language she had learned when they went out, leaving out words like ‘I’ or ‘you’ and verbs like ‘do’, ‘be’ and ‘have’, and using expressions like ‘uh-oh’, ‘oops’, and ‘ouch’. Her sister was surprised that she was finally speaking English naturally, and even more surprised that she had learned this from an English course book. My student was really happy that other people had noticed her progress, not only in structure or vocabulary, but also in being more natural and closer to the English actually spoken in America.
