Purchase A customer visits the merchant’s website and adds products to their cart.
Checkout The customer starts to checkout by adding their billing and shipping information.
Authentication Now, the EMV® 3-D Secure protocol is activated and starts authenticating the customer’s details.
DAF Initiation The merchant initiates a DAF transaction. This only happens if the merchant's CustomerId and eight required fields are added to a specific request.
First Purchase The customer makes their first DAF purchase, which is authenticated by the issuer with a challenge. Once authenticated, an APC is created for future purchases.
APC Storage The APC is stored at the Directory Server level – this eliminates the need for the merchant or issuer to recall a new value. It is then used for the customer’s future purchases at the same merchant site with the same credit card.
Complete The transaction is complete.
Repeat Customer With the APC verified, the customer will enjoy a frictionless checkout since the issuer cannot challenge a subsequent DAF transaction.
Authenticated Payment Credential (APC) Secured encrypted value that links the merchant, customer/cardholder’s merchant account, and cardholder’s PAN together.

Checkout The customer starts to check out by adding their billing and shipping information.
Payment Payment details are collected and the customer submits the order.
Challenge In this case, a challenge is needed. The customer is presented with a choice from their bank to select their preferred method of One-Time Passcode (OTP) delivery.
EMV 3D Secure is actively working to protect against fraud. Challenges are only necessary when additional protection is required.
OTP Authentication An OTP is sent from their bank. The customer enters the OTP correctly and the transaction is authenticated prior to authorization. This authenticated data helps the issuer make smarter authorization decisions.
Authorization Once authorized, the transaction is complete.

Authentication The EMV® 3-D Secure protocol is activated and starts authenticating the customer's details. Cardinal checks the merchant's rules, and enriched data is shared with the issuer so they can begin their risk decisioning.
Authentication & Authorization The issuer reviews the enriched data behind the scenes, determines that the transaction is low risk, and authenticates without any consumer friction. Once authorized, the transaction is complete.
Biometric Authentication In this case, a challenge is necessary. The biometric feature is initiated through the issuer's banking app following a secure push notification. Once the customer performs the fingerprint or facial scan, they return to the merchant's browser and click "done" to complete the challenge.
