What is Method URL?

Method URL is a concept in the EMV 3DS protocol that allows an issuing bank to obtain additional browser information at the start of the authentication session to help facilitate risk-based authentication.

A scripting call is executed by the merchant on behalf of the issuer

It is mandatory for a merchant to run Method URL if it is requested by the issuer

The merchant must run the Method URL script when the checkout is taking place. This allows the issuer to collect a rich set of data elements such as device information, IP address, and other fields that could be used in models and rules.

If an issuer chooses to run the 3DS Method URL, but the merchant is not allowing it to complete or run properly, the merchant and issuers could experience negative or unexpected results from the protocol - such as higher step-up rates or authentication failures.

Method URL is retrieved by the 3DS Server using the Preparation Message

What does this do?

the Method URL to be identified based on the card’s bank identification number (BIN) used in the transaction and placed onto the merchant’s web page earlier in the process.

the need for a redirect later in the process, allowing Method URL to run before the buyer commits to the order. This allows for transaction processing time for the authentication request to become faster than with the previous protocol.

What's the big deal?

Method URL makes authentication more standardized and predictable - while providing the benefit of additional data sharing within the authentication flow. It presents the opportunity for a consistent iframe within the transaction flow where issuers can capture additional data for risk-based decisioning. All while providing a more frictionless customer experience.

What can issuers and merchants do to get the most out of EMV 3DS?

An issuer should make sure their ACS is taking advantage of the benefits of priority data elements and Method URL. Most ACSs will be able to provide performance data to show what an issuer can expect from their models and platforms.
