With no two days being the same, my role as a Graduate Infrastructure Surveyor is a varied and interesting one.
With clients including private claimants, public sector and charitable organisations, my tasks can include undertaking valuations of land and property for disposal and acquisition purposes as well as compensation claims. I also participate in project management meetings and updating affected landowners on behalf of the client, assisting senior colleagues in the review and preparation of leases, licences and agreements as well as the drafting of briefing notes for clients.
I’m now more client-facing, with a keen focus on the delivery of quality outputs and products. My core work involves the production of reports in relation to statutory compensation, or the valuation of property interests. As part of my development, I was offered the opportunity to line manage a graduate surveyor and support them in their journey towards their own APC. This opportunity has enabled me to develop my people skills and manage the delivery of a significant amount of professional advice to our clients.
I joined Carter Jonas on the graduate scheme in August 2017 and passed by APC in spring 2019. Since then, my role had changed so much.

Pre-COVID-19, my week would be mixed – some days in the office and some on inspections, plus some time flexibly working from home. Recently I’ve been working from home a lot more, with the exception of some site meetings. While I’ve enjoyed the work-life balance of home-working, I’m looking forward to getting back to the office for some more face-to-face interaction!
Outside my day to day role, I am involved in the graduate training programme for the Birmingham office and the entire company and I’m actively involved in the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion group for the company. You can find out more about this initiative in a recent Infrastructure View article, here. As part of this group, I have had the opportunity to develop and lead the company’s School Ambassadors Network to help children from a range of socio-economic backgrounds to access a career in property.
I am the Chairman of Young Entrepreneurs in Property (YEP) in Birmingham, which I founded in early 2018. I sit alongside 14 other property professionals, to develop a unique and varied series of networking events, supporting professional development across the property industry in Birmingham. I also am involved in steering the national YEP network, as one of the regional Chairs.
I joined Carter Jonas on the graduate Scheme in September 2019 having completed a geology degree from Cardiff University. Working at Carter Jonas I have completed a RICS accredited degree whilst working full time, and since then I have been working towards my chartership, undertaking regular APC update meetings with my APC supervisor.

As part of the graduate scheme I am given the chance to attend internal training courses in addition to a range of industry conferences helping to improve my knowledge of the APC process and too keep update with recent developments within the Minerals and Waste Management fields.
To be successful you need to have good communication skills; as a graduate surveyor I speak to lots of different individuals on a daily basis, ranging from members of the public to land agents. As a graduate, you need to be well organised, in order to keep on top of your workload as well as preparing for your APC.
I met Carter Jonas at a recruitment fair whilst I was an MSc real estate student and subsequently gained a place on the infrastructure graduate scheme in the London team.

My day to day work is very varied, but normally involves valuing land and property related to compulsory purchase orders and regeneration. Recently, I have been involved in undertaking buyback valuations on behalf of an acquiring authority for an estate regeneration scheme.
The office environment is very friendly and sociable, and all the different teams are approachable. There is a good social scene too – we have a netball team, monthly drinks and we also get involved in charity events – last year I participated in the LandAid sleepout.
I would like to have more of a leadership role within the team, and have an active role in helping other graduates with their APC training.
Recently, I have been involveAs an example, on behalf of Wakefield Council, I have recently been negotiating Part 1 Compensation for claims submitted in respect of the recently opened Eastern Relief Road. Having valued properties at the relevant date, I also visited the scheme area to ascertain the impact of the new road and to assess whether factors such as noise, artificial light and vibration had caused depreciation in local property values. I then negotiated settlements with the claimants’ agents.
I am an Infrastructure Surveyor, based in the Leeds office. I joined Carter Jonas in September 2018 as a graduate – I had an MSc in Real Estate but originally studied geography before developing interests in property and infrastructure whilst working for a local telecoms site acquisition and management company.

Ultimately, your role is part of a wider team within the business so being able to work with colleagues is vital. Good communication and negotiation skills are essential, whether that be through telephone or face-to-face conversations, presentation delivery, email correspondence, or written reports and documents.
The nature of the workload at Carter Jonas is diverse and interesting, a working day does not feel chore-like or repetitive. As a junior member of staff seeking practical experience, the firm provides excellent opportunities to learn and develop in the role; senior colleagues are also very approachable and helpful! It is exciting to be involved in nationally significant infrastructure schemes such as HS2.
Since joining, I have undertaken a Masters in Real Estate and Property Management, and have subsequently transferred my skills into my current role as a Surveyor based in Birmingham.

I joined Carter Jonas’ Infrastructures team in December 2016 as a Contract Coordinator with 15 years’ administrative experience within the Infrastructures sector. During my interview I expressed my interest in properties and surveying following completion of my Construction Management degree.
As an overview, I provide clients with advice based on my assessment of their portfolio and making recommendations for disposal, acquisition and development potential. I undertake the management of complex cases involving residential and commercial properties heavily impacted by major road schemes with the support of senior management as and when required.
I am currently working as an Asset Manager on the Highways England contract, managing a mixed portfolio of agricultural, commercial and residential properties. I am also working on the Severn Trent Water contract, providing strategic advice for their residential property portfolio.
My experience has been that no day is the same and the camaraderie of the direct team and my peers makes Carter Jonas an exciting and enjoyable firm to be a part of.
I really enjoy my job – the contracts I work on are diverse and provide opportunities to broaden my skills and knowledge beyond my current role.

In my day-to-day job, I’m frequently out of the office, whether it’s on site, or negotiating with clients or landowners. One day I might be assessing the viability of a prospective mineral extraction site, and the next performing an inspection of an underground mine.
I’m also given plenty of opportunity to develop myself personally; between my colleagues and me, we attend a vast range of industry conferences, in addition to internal training courses, to allow us to keep on top of new development and legislation, as well as learning from each other’s expertise.
With a background in geosciences, many people are surprised to hear that I work in the property industry, but I really enjoy having a different outlook and relatively niche specialism. Working at Carter Jonas had allowed me to gain an RICS accredited degree whist working full time, and since then I’ve been working towards my chartership, with regular progress meetings with an APC supervisor.

I started my career with Carter Jonas after learning of the key role the company has in the regeneration of many areas in Birmingham. The fact that the company works so closely with Birmingham City Council on schemes persuaded me that it was a place that I would be more than happy to work at.
A typical day for me at Carter Jonas consists of regular communication with my line manager and wider team. With the work that I do, I regularly find myself learning something new and expanding my knowledge. The work I undertake on a daily basis is often assisting senior members in the team with tasks, or, as of recently, communicating and assisting other teams with their workload, which has proven to be very beneficial for my career and my understanding of the industry.
My favourite part of working at Carter Jonas is the active encouragement I get from the team that I am a part of. The knowledge that I have the required support to build my skills as an apprentice and have the confidence of qualified professionals, makes working at Carter Jonas a very enjoyable experience.

Pre-COVID-19, my week predominantly consisted of working from the Cardiff Office with some site inspections of mineral and waste sites and face to face meetings with clients. Since Covid-19 I have been predominantly working from home whilst continuing to undertake site inspections. Recently I have started getting back into the office enabling better collaboration with colleagues in the Cardiff office.
My day-to-day role varies, focussing on a range of tasks from research to report writing contributing to a variety of projects under the supervision of different members of the Minerals and Waste Team. I am predominantly involved in valuations but also contribute to compulsory purchase, business rates and planning projects in order to develop the wide-ranging skillset needed to pass the APC.
