Rural

Since our first instruction, in 1885, to oversee the portfolio of the Marquess of Lincolnshire, estate management has been at the core of the Carter Jonas business.
That estate remains under our stewardship today, but our business has grown to manage over 1.3 million acres throughout England and Wales, with a diverse portfolio ranging from mansion houses to large, multifaceted estates.
We have also expanded our offering, and now have specialist teams across the range of property sectors who complement our longstanding rural property services.
These include agency, leisure, energy, management, sustainability, valuations, minerals and waste, finance, and geospatial solutions.
As a Partnership with over 1,000 people, operating nationwide from seven hub offices and a further 27 regional offices, we can offer the best of both worlds to potential recruits – from graduates to partners.

Throughout 2018-19, agreement was achieved for the following Vision statement for the Commercial division, working toward 2025:
“To grow the division into a team that provides a truly national, robust,
co-ordinated and personal service that works to enhance the built environment for our clients through continued investment in our people and regional diversification.”
This Plan has been written in recognition of the work that has been undertaken throughout the previous plan period to build the Commercial division to a £21 million division, equating to over one quarter of the business, both in terms of turnover and headcount.
To continue to build upon this, it is recognised that focus needs to be applied to our resources and regional and service structure. Infrastructure in support of the divisional activity will also be essential in a time of great change in relation to automation and technological enhancements.
This Plan has been created through consultation with members of the division, with input added from across the current regional offices and national service teams, together with Business Services heads. This has been undertaken to ensure that we understand our Partners’ and staff’s aspirations lie for the Plan period more widely than on the financial basis on which the previous Plan was focused.
Each team has an individual charged with developing their business plan over the Vision 2025 period. In conjunction with the Divisional Board, they are responsible for setting the annual budget, the business plan and implementing it.
Our vision for sustainability is to adopt business strategies and activities that meet the needs of Carter Jonas while protecting, sustaining, and enhancing human and natural resources now and for future generations. Since 1855 our people have worked with the natural environment to create more sustainable outcomes for the property and landowners that we have served and within the communities that we work. There are three key elements through which we manage our commitments to sustainability:
Our sustainable business

Our people
Carter Jonas has given me the support and time to pass my APC. My work offers a variety of jobs, so each day is different and presents a different challenge to tackle. As the firm is multi-disciplinary, it gives you the opportunity to work with different departments such as renewables which also helps expand your knowledge.
Moreover, Carter Jonas has supported several of my business development ideas such as a clay day and charity cricket match.

The core of Carter Jonas is its people and culture. I’m frequently reminded by those who have joined our team about the warm and friendly welcome they received. This ethos is important to us and is underpinned by our values which are approachable, effective and ambitious. These values depict how we encourage everyone to work together in our business for mutual benefit, and that of our clients.

I have recently come back from maternity leave, now working flexibly providing a good work/ family life balance. Carter Jonas has been very supportive throughout and provide a great maternity package, especially as I worked for the company over five years. I continued to be promoted when on maternity leave and have now worked my way up from Graduate to Associate Partner.
My work role is very varied from estate management, rural planning to compulsory purchase and compensation. My role has changed since I started with the firm, as Carter Jonas has allowed me to develop areas which I’m passionate about.

I joined Carter Jonas six years ago when we opened the office in Taunton, and I have enjoyed being part of the South West team and growing awareness of our service offering in the region.
I have been given the support and flexibility to manage my own workload and grow my own client base. Being allowed to take full responsibility for my own instructions is fulfilling and has also enabled me to work more flexibly when appropriate, and to maintain a healthy
work/life balance.
I deal with a wide range of rural property sales and associated professional work and enjoy this mixture of work. Being part of a national firm helps to secure instructions, especially for the marketing of farms and land which often require national exposure to maximise value. It has also helped me to broaden my skillset.

One of the most important elements of the success of a business is its people. Having worked at Carter Jonas for a number of years, I can categorically say that the firm puts its people first. They take career path of their people seriously, and I have been promoted a number of times during my time here, most recently to Partner.
Our workload is interesting and varied, and collaborating with other specialist teams within the business not only offers a greater skillset for our clients but helps share knowledge between our people and sets us apart from other national firms.
