WINNER
Northern Ireland Covid Response
by Big Motive, for Department of Health, Northern Ireland
In a year that shook the design industry, it’s appropriate that Northern Ireland Covid Response, by Big Motive takes this year’s best of show.
Also the winner in the Designing out COVID19 category, this suite of interconnected digital products undoubtedly helped save lives in Northern Ireland and keep many people safe.
Responding to a brief to address the changing needs of those affected by COVID19 and alleviate the burden on health workers, Big Motive set to work on a holistic solution, which considered public health policy, expert medical advice, behavioural science, user experience, accessibility and inclusive design practice.
The two main outputs were a COVIDCare app, which is for accessing services and Stop Covid NI, a track and trace app which has had 900,000 downloads. The population of Northern Ireland is 1.8 million, meaning half of all citizens have been reached. This is an incredible achievement which our judges took note of.
By protecting citizens’ data and by reaching them with small nudges rather than overbearing language, both products resonated with the pubic.
When they engaged with the products, people were rewarded by being told that they were doing their bit for society and helping to keep people safe. This built a sense of community and empowered users.
Similar apps in other countries hit sticking points around data privacy and suffered from technical difficulties.
We found out more about how this project was designed and why it was so successful when we caught up with Big Motive co-founder Stephen Shaw and design director Rebecca Walsh. Check out our video interview with them.
The judges said: “A very solid service design approach for an important issue, and in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment. Great to see that it has been designed for young people – and would love to see how that changed the design.
