Northern Ireland Covid Response
by Big Motive, for Department of Health Northern Ireland
In March 2020, Big Motive was commissioned by the Northern Ireland Department of Health to create a service that would address people’s changing needs throughout the pandemic and reduce stress on medical workers. The centrepiece of this service was the COVIDCare NI app which allowed users to stay up to date with the latest information about the virus, check their symptoms and find advice on self-isolation. It has evolved with pandemic developments, including a new vaccination management feature.
The studio later unveiled the StopCOVID NI app, the country’s contact tracing app. The end-to-end platform emphasises privacy and accessibility and was downloaded over 900,000 times, which is around half of Northern Ireland’s population.
The judges said: “Vast project demonstrating clarity and accessibility. Design methodology well thought through, showing impactful outcomes.”
Helping mitigating risks: how a digital passport allowed safe staffing in our hospitals
by Locum's Nest
Healthtech company Locum’s Nest unveiled a mobile app in an attempt to ease staff movement and enable doctors to cross-cover shifts at neighbouring hospitals during the pandemic. The Locum’s Nest Digital Passport built on the company’s network of some 30,000 doctors in over hospitals and GP practices to help medical professional meet demand during the crisis. Through the app, doctors were able to work in partnering hospitals as a way to reduce staff shortages. By May 2020, the company reported that 91% of all vacant shifts had been filled across participating hospitals. The service has developed throughout the pandemic – a vaccination feature was made available to support staff at regional vaccine hubs.
HALO - A new era of self-testing
by Matter, for Halo
Matter designed the packaging for UK start-up Halo, a government-approved Covid testing kit. Halo’s kits use saliva samples and are delivered through a door-to-door courier service. Eschewing typical heavy card boxes and plastic wallets, Matter developed an envelope which reduced cost and remained compliant with bio-safety regulations. An integrated 3D structure pops up and protects the contents inside. The design team opted for premium materials and finishing as a way to build trust in the brand. It’s made from a renewable and recyclable material. Matter also worked on supply and fulfilment for the self-testing kits, working within a tight time frame from concept to delivery.
Punk Sanitiser
by Uncommon Creative Studio, for BrewDog
As the pandemic took hold, sales of hand sanitiser shot up among consumers, causing shortages for key organisations. To meet the shortfall, Uncommon teamed up with distillery BrewDog to create their own sanitiser: Punk Sanitiser. The product was not sold but distributed for free to those who needed it – at local charities and in communities where there were shortages. These included Scottish charity Aberlour, which works with vulnerable families across the country. As the project evolved, one problem was container availability – different products were used such as small beer bottles. In total, more than 50,000 units were packed and donated to organisations.
