SlowMo
by Special Projects in collaboration with the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design,
for King's College London
SlowMo, a new inclusive, digitally supported therapy service for people with distressing psychosis, helps to overcome the challenges faced by existing talking therapies. Designed by Special Projects, in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team at King's College London, the project has since been awarded £1.3m funding by charitable foundation Wellcome to enable it to be scaled up in three NHS Trusts.
The app itself addresses current issues such as poorer access, engagement, adherence and outcomes for marginalised groups, by empowering them to implement healthy daily habits that support their progress made during therapy, even after it has finished. Guided by a key metaphor of capturing worries as “‘bubbles’” – thus providing time and space to process the thought patterns behind the worries – the app allows these bubbles to be manipulated by “‘bubble tools”’ that can be used by therapists and patients alike. These can then help facilitate conversation between both parties, with the latter gaining a better insight into abstract therapy methodologies. The app is also designed to be used during a psychotic episode and features an emergency function to slow down unhelpful thinking, as well as a toolkit that contains the most useful information from previous therapy sessions, all made accessible through clean and straightforward UI and UX designs.
The judges said: “Beautifully and carefully thought through design. Simple, clean and calming; which is just right for the market.”
Magazzino Italian Art
by Synoptic Office, for Magazzino Italian Art
Magazzino Italian Art is a museum and research centre based in Cold Spring, New York, that hosts satellite exhibitions, events and research initiatives all around the world. It commissioned design agency Synoptic Office to create a platform that would gather these various outputs into one place, allowing an international audience to engage with them without the need for physical proximity.
The resulting destination contains elegant and inspiring editorial and video content within the minimalist framework of a museum website. Designed to be easily navigable but equally engaging, the site is filled with educational resources that brings visitors closer to the subjects and artworks that Magazzino holds dear. Through its extensive archive, visitors can immerse themselves in post-war and contemporary Italian art and culture regardless of their location, making Magazzino a truly borderless institution.
