Airhead: Anti-Air Pollution Face Mask
by Impacting Business by Design, Brunel Design School, Brunel University London and Realise Product Design, for Airhead
Along with the potential for collisions, cycling in London brings with it another, more insidious danger: pollution. Some cyclists wear masks to counter this health risk, but many of the current masks on the market are either not up-to-scratch in terms of their capacity to protect riders from the pollution, or are too hot, uncomfortable and ugly to wear.
Airhead, a new anti-air pollution mask that is capable of blocking >99% of particulate matter, and isn’t an eye-sore on your face. Created with the help of designers and researchers at Impacting Business by Design, Brunel Design School and Realise Design, Airhead is mainly aimed at city cyclists, but is suited to anyone that spends lots of time in polluted urban outdoor environments. The unisex mask combines an air-tight fit with a modular, easy-to-clean design, and replaceable filters made of 99% nanofibres. It can even be customised through the use of the AirSkin, a removable fabric cover that stretches over the body of the mask and is changeable in colour, allowing each rider to build an Airhead that suits their style.
The judges said: “The design for disassembly is good, it responds to its brief well thinking about the user and also thinks about local production.”
Ooni Volt 12
by Ooni, for Ooni
Ooni, a renowned outdoor pizza oven brand known for revolutionising the market with their innovative products, has made yet another addition to their product range. The new Ooni Volt, an all-electric pizza oven for both indoor and outdoor use brings added versatility to the Ooni design, allowing users to cook delicious pizza year-round.
Capable of reaching 850°F (450°C) in just 20 minutes and thoroughly cooking authentic Neapolitan-style pizza in just 90 seconds, the Volt does away with the need for outdoor space and good weather. Featuring temperature, time and balance controls, as well as smart power management and twin heating elements, this new design is perfect for both novice and experienced pizza chefs. The Volt even includes a boost feature which provides a quick targeted recharge of the baking stone so that pizzas can be made back-to-back with no breaks in between. As a result, cooking for big groups is a cinch, and the added bonus of the Volt’s aesthetically-pleasing exterior means it will look the part out in the garden or inside the house according to Ooni.
Qwickhose Wing-Lock Connectors
by Rivendale Products, for Rivendale
Qwickhose is an innovative new design for garden hose end connectors that was created by Rivendale Products during the 2020 lockdown. Dreamt up as an antidote to the commonplace issue of hose connectors popping off during watering, or breaking after little use, this design solves that problem by doing away with the flimsy teeth grips of traditional connectors.
Instead, Qwickhose uses a wing-lock connection that involves users pushing the hosepipe over an inner tube, clamping the wings shut and then securing everything by tightening a screw-on nut. The extra connector length can then be used as a handle, as well as significantly increasing hose grip to prevent unwanted pop-offs. As a result, the process of attaching a hosepipe becomes a breeze, for both casual and expert gardeners alike, and the durability of the connector reduces the need for constant fixes and replacements. Importantly, Qwickhose connectors fit almost all 12.5mm garden hose pipes and can be used in conjunction with any existing spray-guns, sprinklers or other accessories.
A Different League – URC Trophy
by Matter, for United Rugby Championship
Product innovation consultancy Matter worked with the United Rugby Championship (URC) to come up with a new concept for its crowning glory: the URC trophy. Future-facing in its design and progressive in its values, the new version embodies the distinct values of the URC brand, which was developed by Bath-based agency Thisaway.
Titled the Array trophy, it features a collision of four U-forms (each representing one of the four regional conferences) on its exterior, which were taken from the 'U' of 'United' in the URC logo. These were 3D printed with a raw, pitted finish and serve as a tribute to the power and strength of the sport. Meanwhile, suspended in the centre of the trophy, is a vessel that symbolises the championship and which was made using traditional silversmithing techniques, and atop this vessel is a blue crown that will change with each champion and season. Together, these elements form a trophy that is reflective of the cultural diversity and rich history of the United Rugby Championship.
