Our Stories
by Uncommon Creative Studio, for ITV, BBC, Channel 4 and Channel 5
To celebrate the role of broadcasting in the UK, Uncommon created a one-off special for a unique collaboration between the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. Over the course of two minutes, the film conveyed the power of television with features from popular shows such as Fleabag, Great British Bake Off and I May Destroy You. Alongside these clips, Our Stories follows the UK landscape, from farmers’ fields to Cornish coastlines, London estates to the Royal Academy gallery. Uncommon says that the film – which played across a series of channels – highlighted the “countess stories that have changed us and helped us see the world differently”. It marked the first time UK public service broadcasters had collaborated on such a campaign, and it aimed to reach half of the country’s adult population.
The judges said: “Simultaneously showcases the diverse landscape of Britian and British television, presented through an interesting abstract montage of playful sequences. Gave me goosebumps."
The Inside Story of the Eurosport Cube
by Discovery/Eurosport
TV network Discovery, Inc. developed the Eurosport Cube for its coverage of 2020’s US Open and Roland-Garros tennis tournaments. Eurosport was originally designed as a VR studio for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games and was then revamped for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which were subsequently delayed. The Eurosport Cube combined a mixed-reality studio, extended reality and graphics in an attempt to transport viewers to the heart of the action beyond the confines of a typical green-screen style studio. One notable feature was its ability to ‘teleport’ guests into the studio from around the world, which meant that players could appear physically from New York and Paris and have post-match talks in London.
Space Resources
by Playdead, for Luxembourg Space Agency
In a collaboration between NASA and the Luxembourg Space Agency, design studio Playdead was commissioned to create an educational film about the possibility of mining resources on the moon. The aim of the piece was to encourage new investors and inform people about the future of moon colonisation. Consulting with both space agencies helped Playdead depict a not-too-distant future of moon life, with space suits, infrastructure and innovations. Hoping to create something “epic in scale”, Playdead used the vantage point of a cinema lens and produced work across animation, artwork and scripts. Sound design was created by BXFTYS.
VE Day 75: The People's Celebration
by Kate Dawkins Studio, for BBC Studios Events
2020 marked the 75th anniversary of VE Day, and Kate Dawkins Studio worked alongside the BBC and the Royal British Legion to create a series of virtual celebrations for the event. The veterans were not able to travel for recorded celebrations or be filmed at home, so the studio used phone interviews in a series of six films. Each one combined spoken word, archive footage and motion graphics in the retelling of wartime stories, childhood evacuations and even tales of love. In order to match the wartime aesthetic, the studio used vintage souvenir graphics, old journals and headline clippings to create a period-authentic feel. The contributors even supplied some of their own materials for the videos.
