Northern Ireland Covid Response
by Big Motive, for Department of Health, Northern Ireland
As part of the Northern Ireland Department of Health’s response to the COVID pandemic, digital design studio Big Motive was brought in to create a full service solution. Although the exact user needs were not clear at the start of the crisis, the studio focused on two principles: a service that could adapt to changing needs over the pandemic and would alleviate the burden on medical workers. The team comprised researchers, designers and behavioural scientists. One of the outcomes was a digital framework and roadmap which explored how technology could support health services. Big Motive also developed the COVIDCare NI app to keep people up-to-date with news. Later, the StopCOVID NI app was unveiled, a contact-tracing proximity app that was downloaded almost 900,000 times.
The judges said: “Vast project demonstrating clarity and accessibility. Design methodology well thought through, showing impactful outcomes.”

Build Your Legend
by Phantom, for Google
Phantom designed the Build Your Legend game to help families learn about digital safety together. Created to fit easily inside backpacks, the kit presented a series of safety-related questions covering topics such as strong passwords, cyberbullying and recognising scams. Only by answering these questions could players unlock the reward – their own trophy. Once complete, families were able to design their prize with a customisation tool, with different colours and accessories. This aimed to provide a permanent reminder of the important lessons they had learned. Part of a project for Google’s Be Internet Legends initiative, more than 275,000 of the kits were sent to schools across the UK.
Paste Campaign
by WeTransfer
WeTransfer’s visual presentation tool Paste was revamped last year, which saw a 340% increase in sign-ups. The platform offers a content-first approach rather than focusing on templates, with features that allow for constant and reactive updates. Other features include a unifying brand theme (which sets custom fonts, colours and watermarks for each slide) and the ability to paste a range of formats, from GIFs, Instagram profiles and Figma files. Another potential reason for growth was the pandemic, as teams were working remotely and collaborating in different ways. The tool reported 40,000 active monthly users making more than 100,000 slides every month.
Fast Stream Assessment Centre Application
by Cyber-Duck, for the Cabinet Office
The Cabinet Office enlisted digital design studio Cyber-Duck to increase the diversity of its candidates. After research – which included more than 70 interviews with candidates – one of the core reasons about the lack of success rates from lower-socioeconomic backgrounds, black and disabled candidate emerged: they felt they didn’t belong.
A user-friendly tutorial was established which walked candidates through the process with reaffirming messaging and imagery they could relate to. A web application was also designed to make content more inclusive and engaging, looking at user journeys and usability-testing. According to responses, 94% of people found the digital experience more enjoyable, with 82% preferring it to paper. During the pandemic, the physical examination was turned into a remote, digital experience which sought to retain the supportive atmosphere.
