In a way that nowhere else does, the city of Berlin blends history and tradition with cutting-edge design. As Citywire Berlin goes all-electric for 2020, we are combining the best traditional values and skills of asset management with the very latest technology to give you a unique experience.
The fund selector community is resourceful and resilient, like the city itself, and just as Germany’s capital reinvented itself to overcome adversity, we have reinvented Citywire Berlin for 2020. The lineup of portfolio managers will be as rich and varied as ever, and by deploying the very latest in digital technology we’ll bring you virtual workshops that are as close as you can get to a face-to-face meeting. With every session moderated by Citywire’s editorial staff, you’ll be able to question the portfolio managers in exactly the same way you would if you were in the same room.
Dozens of economists, sovereign wealth fund bosses, politicians, visionary statisticians and futurists, as well as night club entrepreneurs, computer hackers and music producers have shared their ideas with us in keynote sessions over the 11 years we’ve been running Citywire Berlin.
Following in their footsteps in 2020 will be world-renowned behavioural economist Tim Harford, who has been described as 'a genius at telling stories that illuminate our world' and ‘perhaps the best popular economics writer in the world’. He will be looking at the truth behind dubious statistics and manipulated figures, while also examining the science behind – and lessons from - disasters and successes.
Kicking off proceedings, economists Thanos Papasavvas and David McWilliams will trade views on what is really shaping the current macroeconomic agenda and what key events investors need to watch out for.
Speaking on a hugely topical theme, Devi Sridhar is a professor of Global Public Health and is the founding director of the Global Health Governance Programme. She will be examining the consequences of the public health emergency we have all faced in 2020, and assessing where we go from here.
With the US election result due to be announced as the event gets underway and many commentators seeing the potential for a highly contentious outcome, we’re delighted to welcome back Dr Pippa Malmgren to give us her insider’s view on the result. A former White House advisor as well as an investor and entrepreneur, Dr Malmgren joined us in 2016 to give an instant reaction to Donald Trump’s surprise win – one of our best-received Berlin keynote sessions.
We’ll all be physically back in Berlin in the future for sure.
But in the unprecedented environment we find ourselves in, for 2020 we’re seizing the opportunities that virtual working has created to bring you a truly pioneering event. Please join us for the all-electric Citywire Berlin!

David McWilliams is an economist, author, journalist, documentary-maker and broadcaster. He is Adjunct Professor of Global Economics at the School of Business Trinity College Dublin. David is ranked 10th most influential economist in the world.
He has devoted his entire professional life to the objective of making economics as widely available and easily understandable on as many platforms and to as many people as possible –and is having a laugh doing it.
As a result, he co-founded the world’s only economics and stand-up comedy festival Kilkenomics – described by the FT as “simply, the best economics conference in the world”. He also founded Ireland’s leading literary and ideas shindig, the Dalkey Book Festival. The WEF at Davos debased their currency profoundly by making him a Young Global Leader a few years back.
As well as writing a weekly economics column in the Irish Times, he is active on social media and was named Ireland’s “most influential Twitter user” in 2016. David uses new ways to explain our economic world for example Punk Economics and a new venture with the FT, Punk FT, deploy cartoons to make economics digestible for normal, non-nerdy, punters.

Tim Harford is a world-renowned behavioural economist, an award-winning Financial Times columnist, and a BBC broadcaster.
With a knack for finding fascinating explanations for everyday numbers, Tim’s first two books, The Logic of Life and The Undercover Economist, have been translated into 30 languages and sold well over a million copies. His Radio 4 show More or Less looks at the truth behind dubious statistics and manipulated figures. His podcast Cautionary Tales examines the science behind and the lessons from disasters and successes. He also hosts the BBC's radio series and podcast Fifty Things That Made The Modern Economy, as well as writing the accompanying book.
Whilst he’s a ‘serious’ economist with a career spanning Oxford, Shell and the World Bank, Tim’s FT columns dwell on the economics of daily life and offer tongue-in-cheek solutions to readers’ problems. His first book built on these themes and The Undercover Economist was likened to Freakonomics in its examination and explanation of the workings of everything from coffee shops to organised crime to development aid. He's since gone on to be one of the foremost writers on economics and his work has won multiple awards.
