He has unique insights into how new technology is reshaping traditional organised crime in the narcotics, smuggling and sex trades. Misha Glenny
The Pandemic, Geo-politics and Cyber Insecurity
The pandemic triggered profound changes in the world of cyber. Many companies who planned to introduce digital transformation over a three to five years were compelled to do it in just eighteen months. The shift from office to home work was facilitated by a massive and rapid expansion of network capabilities. But it also led to a dramatic increase in the attack surface and the attack vector: the vulnerabilities in the network and the tools designed to exploit them. Criminals, often confined to their homes because of lockdown, have ramped up online crime. This includes widespread fraud associated with the pandemic and a multiplying of the biggest quotidian threat to businesses: ransomware. In this electrifying talk, sometimes funny, sometimes shocking, Misha Glenny explains the changes that have taken place to a background of deteriorating relations between US and China at the centre of which is a Cold War at whose very heart is Tech.

Building Facebook’s Oversight Board: a new type of governance for the digital age
In 2018 Mark Zuckerberg outlined a vision for a new system of content governance – one in which Facebook would make fewer decisions on its own about the most challenging content moderation challenges facing the company. In October 2020, that vision became a reality with the launch of the Oversight Board. In this presentation, Dex Hunter-Torricke, head of communications for the Oversight Board, shares some of
the key learnings from the Board’s early work.

WE’RE BACK IN BERLIN – LIVE! After more than year of squeezing maximum value out of virtual meetings, at last we’re able to bring you face-to-face events once again! Citywire Berlin 2021 will follow the familiar format we’ve all missed so much, with a great line-up of portfolio managers, an exciting mix of keynote speakers, and that vital peer-to-peer interaction that is the source of so many new ideas.
Opening an exciting and varied line-up of main conference sessions, Dex Hunter-Torricke has worked for the UN, Google, Facebook and SpaceX. He now serves as head of communications at The Oversight Board, the independent body established to tackle and steer the responses of Facebook and Instagram to the most challenging content issues of the day. He will outline exactly what those challenges are and how the Oversight Board sets about tackling them, giving us a sense of how social media self-regulation might evolve.
The programme continues with Misha Glenny, an internationally renowned expert on global organised crime. Whether it's dope smugglers in British Columbia, oil/weapons/people traffickers in Eastern Europe, Japanese yakuza or Nigerian scammers, he will uncover for us the complex, globalised and franchised modern underworld.
Dedicated to demystifying the workings of the human brain, Dr Hannah Critchlow is a neuroscientist with a grounding in neuropsychiatry. Drawing on her research into cellular and molecular neuroscience, her keynote session will look at how our perceptions of the world influence our decision-making, and how fear and stress affect our behaviour.
Our Friday morning speaker, Judit Polgár, became the youngest ever Grandmaster at just 15 years old and is generally regarded as the strongest female chess player of all time. At the age of 9, Polgár won her first international tournament in New York and she was 11 when she defeated a Grandmaster for the first time. If you’re interested in strategy in its purest forms, her Friday morning keynote is a must-see session. She will also be re-enacting some of her most famous matches so if you’d like to play the role of a rival Grandmaster, drop me a line!
Of course we’re totally committed to keeping everybody safe, so the event will carefully observe all the relevant rules on social distancing. But this will very much be the Citywire Berlin we all know and love and with everyone having spent more than a year adapting to new ways of working, we’ll be celebrating the strength and resilience of the fund selection community. Join us as we look forward to the future, and reserve your place now!

In 1991 Judit Polgár became the youngest ever Grandmaster at just 15-year-old. She is generally regarded as the strongest female chess player of all time and in 2001 was proclaimed the Female Chess Player of the Century. At the age of nine, Polgár won her first international tournament in New York. This became a cover story in The New York Times. She was 11 when she defeated a Grandmaster for the first time. She became a world youth champion at the age of 12, and then 14 against boys only.
Judit won the title of International Grandmaster in 1991, at the age of 15, breaking the record of the legendary Bobby Fischer and becoming the youngest Grandmaster of all times. By 2004, she had advanced to the eighth place in the absolute world rankings, and in 2005, she had the chance to play for the men’s world title in San Louis. In her final years as an active chess player, she won a bronze medal at the Men’s European Championships in 2011 and represented Hungary eight times as a member of the men’s team at the Chess Olympiad, having won two silver medals, the second one in 2014.

In Amundi's search for tomorrow's ESG winners, we introduced the ESG Improvers range of Funds, with a more dynamic and forward-looking approach to traditional sustainable investing, and fully integrated with our active bottom-up investment process
To capture the ESG premium not yet fully priced in by the market, we aim to identify companies that combine strong fundamentals with positive initiatives to improve their ESG profile. In other words, we want to recognize and extract value from attractive businesses on an upward ESG trajectory.
This is an inclusive approach, where, by targeting companies on their sustainability journey from ESG Improvers to Winners, we can make the a real difference for investors return, and for a better tomorrow.

The investment landscape is evolving rapidly as more companies embrace the need for change to address the major issues of our time. For investors, this means it’s crucial to view the world through a lens that looks beyond traditional sectoral or geographic buckets to focus on overarching themes, such as the sustainability of life on earth. Our Clean Economy strategy invests in the innovative companies creating solutions to address pressures on scarce natural resources and the urgent need for carbon emission reduction. The strategy is part of our ACT product range, which aims to enable clients to take action on environmental and social issues through their investments, while aiming for long-term investment returns.
Workshop objective:
To provide investors with a deeper insight into responsible and thematic investing, on the example of the Clean Economy, which can help future-proof investment portfolios by identifying the companies which are best positioned for long-term changes.

China polarises investment opinion. We address the balance of opportunities and risks through the eyes of curious stock pickers, who believe this is an excellent opportunity to go beyond broad generalisations to find the most exciting companies of the next decade. Our edge is based on a philosophy and approach that recognises generating outsize returns requires participation in disruptive and secular shifts that play out over multiple years, not quarters. This is reinforced by an alignment of incentives and a focus on the growth upside and differentiated insights that are rarely captured in today’s share prices.
Workshop objective:
• How to understand China as an asset class within global equities?
• How to balance the opportunities and risks of investing in China?
• How to navigate societal, cultural and economic developments in China, including regulatory and geopolitical discussion.

Inequality has been more prevalent
through the pandemic resulting in heightened focus on the ‘S’ of ESG. The strong social inequalities that exist in our societies provides an opportunity for companies and investors to identify and tackle social issues with the aim of creating a fairer and more equitable society. Research has also shown that companies that focus on social metrics can achieve a tangible difference in their performance. We seek out those companies that promote better social equality in their practices, with the aim of increasing the value of assets over the medium term.

Thirty-five years ago, a member of the World Bank asked Capital Group to help promote private investment in developing economies by launching the world’s first emerging market (EM) equity strategy. They envisioned the strategy as a catalyst for less developed countries to open their financial markets to foreign investors, generating capital for much-needed growth.
The strategy, Capital Group Emerging Markets Growth, was incepted in 1986 and in May 1990 we launched Capital Group Emerging Markets Growth Fund (LUX), the Luxembourg-domiciled UCITS fund based on the strategy and sharing the same objective: to achieve risk diversification and long term growth of capital by investing in companies based and/or which have substantial activities in emerging markets.
Our history of investing in emerging markets, an experienced team of portfolio managers and analysts and on-the-ground presence help us to uncover key investment opportunities in rapidly growing regions. We believe that a bottom-up, active investment approach is the most robust way of accessing those growth opportunities while addressing some of the structural shortcomings of emerging market indices.

Climate change is one of the largest threats of our time and impacts future generations as well as countries and companies around the globe today. Tackling it requires trillions of dollars of investment every year to transform our world into one that emits net-zero greenhouse gases. This transformation comes with significant opportunities for investors. The global economy and the environment are inextricably linked. As the global economy has grown and developed, so too has our impact on the world’s resources, ecosystems and climate in ways that are both unprecedented and unsustainable. The ASI Climate Funds Range seeks to generate strong long term performance by investing in companies that develop or use products and services designed to drive resource efficiency, support the transition to a low carbon economy and address the wider environmental challenges we face.
Workshop objective:
To better understand how ASI are helping investors contribute to a more sustainable world, while still achieving strong investment returns.

The climate emergency is real and there is growing momentum and widespread acknowledgement by governments, corporations and society as a whole that climate action is the need of our times. In order to keep global warming to the 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels as recommended in the Paris Agreement, the global economy will need to go through a radical transformation, affecting every area of human activity. This transformation will span decades and have significant investment implications, creating structural growth opportunities in some sectors while rendering some business models obsolete. The FF — Sustainable Climate Solutions Fund is designed to capture the long duration structural growth opportunities decarbonisation will provide by investing in the solutions to the decarbonisation problem. It also offers protection from the disintermediation to many sectors that the transition to a low carbon world will cause. Unlike other funds in the climate arena that look to benefit from the issue of climate change, and ones that avoid carbon intensive sectors, the ethos of this fund is targeted around investing in solutions to the issue. Thus, carbon reduction rather than carbon avoidance lies at the heart of the philosophy.
Workshop objectives:
- Understand the different kinds of decarbonisation solutions that are investible today
- Get to know how Velislava Dimitrova and Cornelia Furse manage to create alpha and contribute to decarbonisation

Climate investing is moving into the mainstream as the fund management industry launches new products in response to an awakening of investor consciousness of climate issues. Invesco’s approach is to manage actively, focusing on corporate bonds and searching for investments with ‘strong climate characteristics’. In other words, for companies the managers consider to be performing well relative to peers with respect to climate change. This is more than a ‘low carbon’ or ‘green bond’ approach. We think the right approach is to invest in a wide range of sectors – even those with high carbon intensities, to provide financing to those companies doing the most to facilitate the transition to a low carbon economy.
Workshop objective:
In the workshop we will use an Invesco fund as an example. The objective of the session is to:
1, Introduce the concept and approach
2, Describe the climate investment process, illustrated by examples
3, Explain which climate-related data the team reports
4, Show the portfolio composition
Investment in environmental and climate bond opportunities

Global temperatures are currently on a trajectory to increase by nearly 4°c above pre-industrial levels, which would be truly catastrophic, unless action is taken. Achieving net-zero emissions is therefore an international priority, with $130 trillion of investment needed by 2050 (including $20 trillion by 2025).
For investors, the path to net zero is thus more than a social imperative; it’s also an opportunity to align portfolios with climate objectives and invest in long-term growth markets focused on effecting positive change. We believe three technology value-chains will in combination facilitate the transition to a lower-carbon world and seek to benefit from the waves of investment into climate solutions – batteries, hydrogen, and clean energy.
Workshop objectives:
- The potential benefits of investing in decarbonisation strategies
- LGIM’s approach to investing in these themes

As we emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic, governments across the globe seek to stimulate their economy by increasing spending. However, this also raising the specter of inflation. Infrastructure spending can be an impactful component of economic growth, so this situation presents an interesting opportunity for the listed infrastructure sector. Further support could come as governments shift their focus towards more sustainable investments. We believe that listed infrastructure offers a distinct opportunity, including the potential for stable long-term capital growth, inflation-lined income, and portfolio diversification. Macquarie’s Global Listed Infrastructure team seeks to leverage their experience and infrastructure expertise to deliver attractive risk-adjusted returns using an actively managed, fundamentally driven, primarily bottom-up approach. This approach is enhanced with proprietary ESG and Quality frameworks. Analyst Douglas Hayes will explain how this framework comes together to generate attractive sustainable risk-adjusted returns, especially through recent market volatility.

Last year’s European lockdown measures as a result of the coronavirus meant that companies needed to react immediately with rapid cost reductions, liquidity measures, and working capital management. Selected small and medium-sized enterprises, in particular, have done a tremendous job of adapting their businesses to the challenging situation while, at the same time, maintaining their focus on clients and long-term growth investments. Speed and agility are key prerequisites in order to differentiate oneself from the competition, to use a crisis for market share gains, and to effectively prepare for and participate in the ongoing economic recovery. Although equity markets have already reached all-time highs, there are still promising stocks that can deliver a significant contribution to performance.
Workshop objective:
After the historic economic downturn during the coronavirus crisis, many companies experienced a dynamic recovery. But why have some businesses managed the crisis better than others and how can appropriate stock selection help investors benefit from the economic recovery?

The topic of sustainability has been increasingly integrated into the business model of American companies in recent years and is currently experiencing a further tailwind from President Joe Biden's investment plans: the topics of decarbonization, clean energy and optimizing the water balance are right at the top of his agenda. This is in line with the Nordea 1 - North American Stars Fund's investment philosophy of combining attractive income with sustainable investing. The fund has proven in the past that integrating ESG aspects into investment decisions is not only a tool for reducing risk, but can also lead to higher returns.

Jonathan Butler,
We are likely entering a new period of historically low defaults, according to PGIM Fixed Income, with several factors allowing issuers to reduce their cost of capital and extend their maturities. High yield bonds have rallied strongly since the depths of the COVID crisis, with additional spread tightening expected over the medium to long term. Gone are the days when investors could overlook emerging markets (EM). This may not be a familiar landscape for many, but this is exactly why yields remain attractive. Moreover, it is rare to find an asset class that can generate income, diversify one’s portfolio and where ESG considerations are critically important. PIMCO’s EM funds aim to do all of that, offering a rare portfolio solution in a period of elevated volatility, inflationary pressures and other important transitions for global markets. Our approach combines our global top-down views with fundamental bottom-up analysis, as we look for idiosyncratic alpha opportunities across what has become a large opportunity set.
Workshop objective:
• PIMCO’s view on Emerging Markets Debt.
• Investment implications: PIMCO’s EM funds as a large opportunity set of high-quality yield, diversification and sustainable investing.
• PIMCO’s investment style and idiosyncratic alpha opportunities.

The abrdn Climate Funds Range seeks to generate strong long term performance by investing in companies that develop or use products and services designed to drive resource efficiency, support the transition to a low carbon economy and address the wider environmental challenges we face.
Workshop objective:
To better understand how abrdn are helping investors contribute to a more sustainable world, while still achieving strong investment returns.
