It is now clear that the recent waves of regulation that have swept across China’s equity markets over the last 12 months have been focused on ensuring a “Common Prosperity” for all China’s citizens. The last 40 years of rapid economic growth and development, industrialisation and urbanisation, have led to staggering levels of inequality between the richest in society and those less well-off. These differences, the Chinese leadership fear, may threaten their key goal of “Social Stability” across China, if not addressed soon. The government has focused especially on the lack of affordability of housing, education and healthcare, for all but the wealthiest. Please join abrdn China A share equity experts Ben Morris and Donald Amstad, who will put these reforms into context and explain why, in abrdn’s opinion, the case for investing in a consumer-focused, China A share fund is now stronger than ever before. Workshop objective: To understand how abrdn constructs their China A share portfolio, the key thematics in the fund and to bring the companies abrdn invest in to life.

With supply chain constraints now even hitting Apple and Amazon, the power of digital vs physical is increasingly paramount. Companies at the forefront of the digitalisation curve are less dependent on physical components, highly scalable and so essential to today’s economy they have effectively become ‘digital utilities’. That seem a reach? Imagine your company announces its replacing Microsoft, losing not only its vast cloud infrastructure – but Teams, Outlook, Excel?! Leaders in every industry are realising that they risk extinction by failing to migrate to the Cloud. On top of this: cybersecurity is now the number one threat facing businesses. Investment in cloud computing and, by extension cybersecurity, is now a necessity. Workshop objective: Gregg Guerin will dive into the advantages of a theme-based approach; offering investors pure play exposure to companies at the forefront of today’s megatrends. He will look at some of the most exciting underheld securities captured in our themes. Can innovative technology provide downside protection? As inflation worries abound, Gregg will discuss the competitive advantages of monopolistic business models with their near unsurpassable barriers to entry, wide economic moats and pricing power. He will finally examine Satya Nadella’s positioning of digital technology as “a deflationary force in an inflationary economy’” whilst looking at the value of a subscription-based business model as an inflation hedge.

That the world will be different in a fundamental way a decade from now is hardly a surprising idea. Positioning a portfolio to capitalize on structural change, however, is a trickier proposition. How can investors capture the most important opportunities of the next decade? Thematic investing places structural change at the heart of a long-term equity portfolio and, in our view, can enhance returns, mitigate risks, and enable sustainability integration whilst anchoring investors firmly to the future. However, significant benefits of thematic investing can only be realized if implementation is robust. Workshop objective: - How to identify the key shifts in business models, industries, economies, and markets - How these insights can translate into themes - The key themes for the next decade and portfolio ideas that represent them.

While economic growth has rebounded from last year’s COVID-induced recession, investors must keep a close eye on other risks to markets. Rising inflation and increasing government deficits, changing government policies in China, and elevated market multiples are just a few areas equity participants must watch. Instead of trying to predict the next storm on the horizon, we would rather invest in high quality companies that can excel in all types of bad weather. Quality attributes – pricing power, high barriers to entry and strong competitive advantages – should lead to more predictable earnings that compound over time as well as provide downside protection. Workshop objective: Our Global Equity Fund is an actively managed, concentrated portfolio covering both developed and emerging markets. Our approach is based on returns being driven by a long-term investment in companies with relatively stable and predictable earnings growth that can be sustained for extended periods of time. The strategy draws on the expertise of our boutique’s exclusive 31 strong investment team. ESG is integral to our approach given our focus on relatively stable and predictable ‘quality’ earnings growth combined with long-term holding periods. While the strategy is benchmark agnostic, performance is shown relative to the MSCI All Country World Index.

All companies are exposed to climate change, some more than others, but not all companies are able to respond to climate risks or opportunities equally. This creates stark differences between climate winners and climate losers. We believe this presents an increasing and dynamic opportunity set to benefit both from the winners’ dynamic future and anticipate the losers’ challenges. Our approach uses a market neutral construct to benefit from the secular climate change opportunities and seeks to mitigate downside risk during periods when conventional sectors —such as traditional energy — rally and innovative sectors —such as cleantech — underperform. Workshop objective: Learn how a market neutral portfolio picking winners and losers of climate change has the potential to generate attractive, lowly correlated long-term investment returns and reduce the beta of an equity portfolio.
