Even after the improved performance from domestic equities over the first half of 2021, the UK remains cheap versus other major equity markets and continues to offer an attractive opportunity set for investors. In this session, Alex Wright, portfolio manager of the Fidelity Special Situations Fund & Fidelity Special Values PLC, will outline why he is particularly excited about the prospects for UK value stocks and sectors given the prospect of a multi-year economic recovery in the wake of Covid-19.

With markets being driven by a stop-start post COVID global recovery and concerns that inflation might prove to be more than transitory, Michael Matthews discusses how these duelling factors are driving fixed interest markets.

Governments around the world are already beginning to embrace hydrogen as the answer in these sectors, establishing a hydrogen economy that Bank of America Research expects to be worth trillions of dollars by 2050.
But how can investors access this theme in their portfolios? Our experts will explain how an actively designed index approach can capture the growth potential of the hydrogen economy’s entire value chain.

The fund invests in fundamentally mispriced equities that are benefitting from disruptive mega trends that will influence all levels of society. The investment team believes in allocating capital to disruptive solutions that support sustainable global growth. The portfolio managers focus on selecting businesses which are beneficiaries and enablers of disruption and generate sustainable shareholder value. The investment strategy allocates capital to companies that drive innovation alongside sustainable development to generate positive impacts. We believe the market often underestimates the impact of disruption and is consequently unable to efficiently price it. Utilising a fundamental investment process and experienced team of international research specialists, the fund aims at taking advantage of these dislocations and generate long term capital appreciation.
Workshop objective:
The Fund invests into global equities with exposure to disruptive innovation. We aim to create a well-diversified cross sector thematic fund with exposure to structural growth.

After a decade photographing superstars as an editorial photographer in fashion and music, Giles Duley turned his back on glamour to concentrate on helping people. After a spell as a carer he realized the power of stories and returned to photography. Working with respected charities such as MSF and UNHCR, he highlighted the lesser-known, individual stories behind the headlines of conflict and disaster. He know works to highlight the long-term impact of conflict and humanitarian crises.
Documenting the work and lives of charities and those they help around the world, Giles travelled to Afghanistan at the height of the conflict. Whilst on patrol with US Army’s 75th Cavalry Regiment, he stepped on an IED. He was severely injured, losing both legs and his left arm, spending two months in intensive care. Close to death twice (his family were told to say their goodbyes on both occasions) he pulled through.
Giles became the only civilian to be treated at the military hospital in Headley Court as the NHS had no experience in treating a triple amputee survivor of a bomb explosion. In the year that followed he underwent nearly thirty operations and a grueling rehabilitation regime. Despite being told his life would never be the same, that he would never walk again and he’d require constant assistance, he quickly determined to focus on what he could do rather than what he couldn’t. He stubbornly told his doctors “I’m still a photographer” and less than two years after the incident he was both walking and working again.
As well as returning to Afghanistan to complete his assignment, Giles has documented moving, inspiring human stories in Lebanon, Iraq, Cambodia, Laos, Colombia, Uganda, South Sudan, Angola and Jordan. Photographing conflicts and humanitarian crises for charities and NGOs, he has travelled the world meeting the victims of war and disaster. Sharing their stories with the world, he often returning years later to meet his subjects again and see how desperate circumstances are often tinged with genuine hope.

Professor Gina Rippon is a pioneering researcher in the field of cognitive neuroimaging based at the Aston Brain Centre, Aston University in Birmingham. She is the author of The Gendered Brain: the new neuroscience that shatters the myth of the female brain (February 2019). Here, she deconstructs the stereotypes that swamp us from the moment we’re born, and shows how this social conditioning moulds our sense of self and even shapes our brains. Gina’s book shows how science has been misappropriated throughout history to perpetuate false assumptions. Using the latest findings in neuroscience, she urges us to move beyond the view that there is such a thing as the biologically determined “male” or “female” brain. In fact, our brains are highly individualised, complex, adaptable, and full of unbounded potential.
