Q&A
How can you gain access to long-term structural and foundational shifts; and aim to benefit from areas that are positively disrupting the way we do things; and invest in companies that are disrupting the incumbents and shaping the future? We wanted to make it easier than ever to access these potential growth opportunities, by creating a single point of entry to LGIM’s established portfolio of thematic investments. Investors can access multiple themes via a diversified, risk-balanced portfolio of companies involved in multiple long-term themes identified through expert research. By combining actively researched thematic universes and actively designed thematic investment strategies (matched with a quantitative allocation model to balance risk exposures), the Legal & General Global Thematic Fund can aim to help investors looking for long-term growth, without having to pick and choose between themes.

The world is undergoing significant transitions related to demographic, technological, environmental, and governance factors. Mirova’s process focusses on identifying, buying, and holding high-quality, sustainable companies that are solution providers for these transitions.
Buying at a discount to intrinsic value allows us to meet our objectives: build portfolios that create positive social and environmental impact along with providing financial outperformance.
Jens Peers
CFA® – CEO and CIO of Mirova US
The transition to a low carbon world has barely started with an estimated $4trn investment per annum required on the energy system alone according to the IEA. There is a significant long-term structural growth opportunity available to investors, driven by consumer demand, regulation and the need to decarbonise the global economy on the road to Net Zero.
During our session, Jennifer Moynihan will discuss the transition and investment opportunity, and how the Ninety One Global Environment Fund seeks to capture the structural decarbonisation growth story by investing in companies that are driving the transition to a low-carbon world. Highly differentiated to existing global equity strategies, the Fund goes beyond scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon to quantifiable carbon avoided (carbon impact), investing through the value chain across the key areas of renewable energy, resource efficiency and electrification.

Co-lead Portfolio Managers Arnaud Cosserat and Alistair Wittet take us through some of the European team’s inner workings. In a team where all members are first and foremost “analysts” and every analyst’s voice carries weight at team discussions, they will present the team’s process in action with a case study. What is the role of the Portfolio Managers in this context, how are decisions made? Arnaud and Alistair will also discuss the current positioning of the European portfolio and its performance in 2021 throughout a marked style rotation, rising interest rates, and a covid-reopening environment that has resulted in the strong getting stronger, a phenomena that has benefited many of our quality growth investee companies.

Mark Denham, Co-Manager of FP Carmignac Global Equity Compounders, will stress the importance of acknowledging both long and medium-term time horizons when investing in global equities, especially during the current unique environment. High quality growth compounders have the fundamentals to successfully navigate through time. Mark will illustrate the portfolio’s unique characteristics and why it is essential to adjust the cyclicality of the portfolio to the economic cycle, keeping quality at the heart of our stock picking. This approach mitigates risk by adjusting the portfolio to the investment cycle.

M&A and IPOs have added some sparkle to UK markets this year. Alexandra Jackson will discuss these and other drivers of rocketing returns on your home turf. She will share views on spotting shooting stars while avoiding smoke bombs. We will discuss areas vulnerable to supply chain issues or wage hikes, and where we can find cover.

The extraordinary pandemic-induced social, professional, and technological disruption— and the ongoing digital transformation of consumers and enterprises continues to revolutionise the way we live, work, and operate as a society. Secular trends that were already in motion went into overdrive, widening the gap between struggling “old economy” companies and innovative business models. E-commerce, digital payments, streaming, and cloud computing technologies proved their value through this period and have been broadly adopted by both businesses and consumers. While companies in these areas saw their stock prices skyrocket amid the turmoil, the true transformative potential of many companies in these areas remains largely underestimated and provides substantial runway for future growth and wealth creation. Portfolio specialist Raj Shant examines secular shifts underway, details the importance of ESG considerations when evaluating high growth companies, and explains how the team is positioning the fund to take advantage of long term growth trends.

This presentation will focus on the Biological Revolution, which underpins our excitement for the tremendous investment opportunities in healthcare, and which we believe will fundamentally transform our lives. We think that the advances in the understanding of the gene and the cell will drive another industrial revolution, and change our experiences across many industries, in much the same way as steam, electricity and the internet have.

China makes up 19% of Global GDP, but only 5.5% of the MSCI All Country World Index. How long before asset allocation plays catch-up with economic dynamics?
China’s proportion of global equity indices isn’t the only distortion we will look at. 56% of the top 10 largest China funds by AUM are invested in companies with a market cap of over US$30 billion. This concentration of AUM means many investors are missing out on additional alpha opportunities on offer in China. Join us to learn more on how we think about investing in China and what makes the China Evolution Equity Fund successful.

Amidst economic growth, new opportunities have emerged for dividends to recover on a global scale. Confidence indicators are trending up, however despite improved projections, the recovery could be volatile. The popular SPDR Dividend Aristocrats ETF range has led ETF inflows in 2021 as investors commence to close their dividend underweights. Unconstrained sector weights have allowed Aristocrats strategies to include value and cyclical sector overweights that better benefit from the economic recovery. Critically, similar to fixed income vehicles, the strategies focus on stable income payments, incorporating better volatility management, given the current yield environment.
Recently the range has been expanded to include vehicles that deliver best in class ESG characteristics. In this discussion Ryan Reardon will walk us through the macro outlook for dividend growth, the unique construction features and yield drivers behind the Dividend Aristocrats methodology and particularly the success of expanding the range incorporating an ESG methodology.

Tom will discuss the leadership transition and the strengths of the fixed income franchise built by the two Pauls, before concentrating on the key issues facing bond investors and how the team are thinking and positioning portfolios: -
As we emerge from COVID, will yields stay low as tapering commences?
How does inflation and the wider macro backdrop affect our thinking on duration and the curve? With credit spreads back at pre-COVID levels, should we be thinking more defensively?

Climate solutions in the bond market have expanded with 2019 and 2020 being record years for Green Bond issuance. PIMCO encourage alignment of issuer’s business activities with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including via green / sustainable bond issuance and their track progress over time, as the firm believes a greater ESG impact can be generated by collaborating with and allocating capital toward issuers willing to improve their ESG-related business practices rather than simply excluding issuers with poor ESG metrics. PIMCO will introduce their GIS Climate Bond Fund, which is a multi-sector credit portfolio aiming to foster the transition to a net-zero economy - dedicated to driving a quantifiable positive impact via investments in labelled and unlabelled green bonds, as well as climate leaders who demonstrate innovative approaches to environmental sustainability.

As we emerge from the global pandemic, fixed income markets face a number of challenges - inflation, central bank tapering, virus vs. vaccine – and do so with valuations viewed as “unattractive”. By taking and active and flexible approach to fixed income investing, the Aegon Strategic Bond fund can cut through the uncertainty and exploit opportunities within fixed income markets through the use of multiple alpha sources, allowing it to both deliver returns and mitigate against some of the downside risks that investors fear.

The portfolio can offer clients some attractive diversification benefits from large cap exposure, with a lower risk profile and attractive risk return dynamics. This is why we believe it deserves a long term allocation. The managers focus on stock selection means they benefit from a wide attractive investment universe of growth businesses, many of which they know from their smaller company exposure. After many year of being unloved, UK equities is finally beginning to look attractive to investors once again.

UK Small Cap equities are incredibly well priced. After the double-whammy impact of Brexit and Covid on the UK economy, asset allocators have shied away from the market. As a result, the small cap asset class offers a great opportunity to gain exposure to global megatrends – recovery in global travel and leisure and global leading franchises – all at cheaper prices compared to their European or US peers. The market has recently seen private equity and corporates returning on the hunt for a bargain, a trend that will continue as long as the UK Small Cap market does not re-price upwards. Significant recovery in profitability is happening in many industries and should continue into 2022, as well as an acceleration of growth in infrastructure, artificial intelligence and carbon reducing industries. There are big opportunities in UK small cap…

We have only just begun to understand the ripple effect caused by climate change, and despite not fully grasping the enormity of the consequences, we now know ignoring it is not an option… and time is running out.
As the world mobilises, the next decade needs to usher ground-breaking change.
Energy transition is a key theme within the BMO Sustainable Opportunities Global Equity fund and in this session we will explore how this urgent need for change creates fantastic investment opportunities and translates into long-term tailwinds for the plethora of companies enabling the energy transition.

Brian Newman will discuss the team’s approach to thematic idea generation in its pursuit of attractive risk-adjusted returns. The Antero Peak Group’s approach is designed to identify inflections in multi-year trends where the team has differentiated views on industry fundamentals. Risk management is woven throughout the process—from deep, bottom-up analysis to portfolio construction in an effort to deliver consistent returns that exceed the benchmark. As Brian’s presentation will demonstrate, the Antero Peak Group has generated robust near and longer-term results, while maintaining lower volatility than the broad market (as measured by the S&P 500). The team believes the quality of their returns is a direct reflection of the successful execution of their rigorous process.

Baillie Gifford’s sole business is investment management. Since the company was founded in 1908 it has been a partnership. Today it is owned by 47 partners all of whom work in the business.
We believe that the best investment ideas spring from thinking about future possibilities, not short-term probabilities. We set no barriers to the imagination of our investors, encouraging fresh perspectives and the use of diverse sources of information. We term ourselves Actual Investors.
We currently manage or advise some £352.4bn on behalf of clients worldwide. Whilst we are predominantly an institutional manager (circa 81% of FUM), we offer an extensive range of investment trusts and open ended funds to UK wealth managers and intermediaries.

1. To learn about thematic investing in health technology.
2. To increase understanding of how healthcare is changing.
3. To discuss applying a high growth investment style to healthcare.
Workshop objective
This presentation will focus on the Biological Revolution, which underpins our excitement for the tremendous investment opportunities in healthcare, and which we believe will fundamentally transform our lives. We think that the advances in the understanding of the gene and the cell will drive another industrial revolution, and change our experiences across many industries, in much the same way as steam, electricity and the internet have.
